This time last week our team headed up to Victoria's high country to see the annual @hopproductsaustralia hop harvest. It was a fantastic day & we learned a lot about the process & the flavours we love to showcase in our beers. Australian Pale Ale One of the local Marrickville breweries is a firm favourite of the Hop+Grain staff… the Australian Pale Ale is the pick for some - you’ll often see them with that distinctive orange can in hand in the shop. The grifter is a golden Australian pale ale with a light malt body and zesty hop forward finish. Using a base of Coopers Bootmaker Pale Ale, we’ve added a caramalt steep to match the Grifter malt backbone. Add in some Ella hops (the little sister of Galaxy), and it’s easy to make a delicious Australian-style pale ale, reminiscent of Grifter’s Pale. Beer Style Ale, Pale Ale Flavour Profile Hoppy, Citrus, Tropical Alcohol Content about 5 % Volume 23L Ingredients 1 tin Coopers Bootmaker Pale Ale (1.7kg) 1 tin light malt extract (1.5kg) 200g Caramalt infusion (1 pack) 100g Ella hops US-05 yeast Steps 1. Add Caramalt infusion pack to at least 500ml of warm (68C) water. Steep for 15minutes. 2. Add 40g hops to a bowl of hot water. Steep for 15 minutes. 3. Add the two brew cans to the sanitised fermenter, with 2-3 litres cold water, and stir to dissolve. 4. Strain the malt and hop liquid into the fermenter, using a mesh strainer. 5. Top up to the 23 litre mark with lukewarm or cold water (refrigerated if necessary) to get as close to 20C as possible. Sprinkle the dry yeast then fit the lid. 6. With 4 days to go in fermentation (day 10), add the rest of the hops (use a hop sock if you like) 7. Both based in the UK, one from Bath, one from Somerset….brewing an Australian IPA. Go figure? Haha. . Now, collaborating is always a good thing. With input from both breweries and double the brewing experience, the beers are usually extra flavourful and dank! And this one is no exception. . The hops are not listed on the can, so i used the tinterweb to establish what was inside. Before this i did think i had got the whiff of my favourite hops, Citra, and i was right! Providing zesty and citrus notes. This is paired with two Australian hops, Ella and Eclipse, which im not familiar with. But they bring a very naturistic taste to the beer. Soft hints of lavender, with pine for me and a touch of spice before a subtle bitterness at the end. Very nice. . This is the Australia side of an America V Australia two part collaboration. I have not had the Dakota beer, which is the America side. But id asume it was based around American hops (hopefully with Citra too 😜) . Overall a very nice and refreshing beer. There should be more breweries working together and doing regular collaborations.
