A Norman Russian Imperial Stout, sturdy and present. It pours black as night. A thin head fades away soon. In the nose, an ashy smell with red fruit. While they are still recovering from the King’s Day festivities in the Netherlands, I thought it would be fun to do a vertical tasting of Schuppenboer Maxima today. Queen Maxima is the wife of King Willem-Alexander to whom she has already been married since 2002. Schuppenboer Maxima is also the base beer that brewery Het Nest uses for various barrel aged projects. For example, there is a BA of this Maxima on Whisky, Moscatel, Calvados and Port barrels. The base beer, of course, I already knew. A beer that is spiced, honey-sweet, full-bodied with notes of vanilla and where the alcohol (14% ABV) barely comes through. The wine BA version has extra aging in wine barrels which adds complexity to the beer. The colour is almost the same, maybe the BA Maxima is a little bit more pale. In the nose you already smell the difference. A subtle vinous odeur. In the taste palette you have tangerine, the wine touch that is not overpowering. They are both sweet, while Maxima is honeysweet, the wine BA is more dry. The BA is e little bit stronger and comes in at 14.9% ABV. Pixel stayed nice and cold on the cart and was a super smooth, citrus forward and an absolute stunner in time of need. Medium bodied and crisp, bright citrus fruity flavors with a nice, easy, hoppy finish. I probably would have drank a few more of these on the course if we, and thankfully so, hadn't packed so many low abv session bevvys for the round. A good day with some great guys! . Cheers y'all! 😎🍻
