Tea with Lemon Oil on canvas 16" x 22" Barbara Pratt Sold I am a tea drinker. I take mine with milk and sugar. If I drank it clear I'd have lemon and I'd drink it from this cup. Sunlight goes right through the delicate Limoges and places itself firmly in the tea. I'm not sure where this cup came from. It was my mother's but beyond that I don't know. I've seen a full set of this pattern and all together it's completely over the top gaudy. One perfect cup, though, with its pink roses, tiny apple blossoms and gold trim is just exquisite. Gram Glover’s Tree on Bragg’s Island Etching and aquatint 15 x 17.5 1999 David Blackwood RCA “As a boy visiting my grandparents on Bragg’s Island, I remember a small willow tree at the front gate. It grew in very sparse soil and was enclosed (to protect it from roaming sheep, goats, and pigs!)My Uncle Edgar Glover tells me it came from Deer Island as a slip and was planted beside the rock in the late 20’s. This same tree is shown in the etchings ‘Molly Glover on Bragg’s Island’ 1997 and ‘Granda Glover on Bragg’s Island’ 1991. The tree on Bragg’s Island struck me as a wonderful symbol of rebirth, renewal, and regeneration.” David Blackwood, November 1, 1999. "You May Still be Sleeping" is an astonishing new work from the accomplished Newfoundland painter Grant Boland, and the first in his latest body of work. This painting marks a new direction for the artist, employing his iconic mastery of light and shadow in a thrilling exploration of liminal spaces. Painting the Inbetween "Liminal spaces are familiar places where reality does not feel right. Typically, a liminal space is one defined as occupying a position at, or on both sides, of a threshold. These spaces can evoke a feeling of unease in some, but nostalgia and comfort in others. They tend to have a dreamlike, uncanny quality about them. Empty swimming pools, hotel hallways, closed gas stations, and even bathrooms are some examples. They are impersonal and rarely thought about; they only have relevance by virtue of you being there. Much like life itself." Grant Boland, 2024. When you start with perfection, elevating one's artistic achievement is daunting for most, but not Barbara Pratt. Unbelievably, Pratt has demonstrated, yet again, her ongoing successful pursuit of flawless artistry and her enduring capacity to present us with images of heart-stopping beauty. This sublime piece will be available for viewing at the gallery for a week or so, before going to its new home. The Cake Oil on canvas 18" x 20" 2024 Barbara Pratt Sold "My latest painting is of a birthday cake I made for my mother one year. We had a tea for her and invited her friends. This cake, "The Cake", was three tiers high and had Italian Meringue Frosting. (Notice the capital letters) It was a good cake. Thanks Martha Stewart. Someone else made her a cake that day. This happened frequently and it made me mad. What right did someone else have to make MY MOTHER a cake? Not even a family member! People loved my mother, though and they couldn't help themselves. Well, okay I s'pose. My mother left me so much. Happy Birthday Mum." - Barbara Pratt . #emmabutlergallery #barbarapratt #artcollector #marypratt #canadianart #canadianartist #canadianartcollector #contemporaryart #contemporaryartist #contemporaryartcollectors #newfoundlandartist

"To find out how things actually look is a revelation. I am interested in examining my subject, to really get into it. For my subjects I go to the things of the world not the ideas. Granda Glover’s house, shop, store flake and stage. Uncle Eg Glover’s house to the east. On the extreme left, Uncle ‘One-eyed Leo’ Glover’s house. On the extreme right, his brother ‘Uncle Lewis Glover.’ Aunt Mag Feltham’s house on Point, upper left, middle ground. On the horizon to the left of Granda Glover’s house – Deer Island. To the right, Green’s Island. To the right of Green’s Island, the Gooseberry Islands. The small figure on the stage is watching seabird hunters departure. This stage is the setting for the earlier prints ‘Visitation’ and ‘Granda Glovers Place on Bragg’s Island.’ The windcharger on Glover’s Hill was short lived. It charged a batterywhich provided one or two light bulbs in the small Glovers General Store (which supplied all three islands). The small shed in front of the house was a storeplace for rubber boots and clothes, and drus of kerosene and gasoline (lamp oil and cod trap engine gasoline).” David Blackwood, from a letter to Emma Butler dated July 31, 2007. On International Women's Day, we celebrate the rich legacy of Mary Pratt the artist, and Mary Pratt the woman. “Arguably Canada's foremost realist painter, Mary Pratt (1935–2018) became one of Canada's most celebrated artists for her work that recontextualizes and elevates the ordinary and unseen in everyday life—including jars of jelly, loaves of bread, egg cartons, and aluminum foil—into extraordinary subjects. With exquisite detail, Pratt perceived her surroundings in unprecedented ways to create paintings that comment on matters as diverse as the history of art, domesticity, and Canadian East Coast life." Celebrating the fantastically-talented artist and wonderful human being, Barbara Pratt. “The things I have chosen to paint over time have been varied. There are two main constants though. Beauty is one. I want to be surrounded by beautiful things, live in a beautiful place. Making beautiful paintings is part of that. Beauty is good for my soul. There is plenty of ugliness in the world and I believe that very serious and difficult things can be discussed through beauty." Celebrating the marvellously multi-talented Shawn O'Hagan who the gallery has had the pleasure of representing for many years. “My work celebrates where and how I live – my personal history (both intellectual and spiritual) and my natural surroundings. I try to live carefully, touching what is around me. I am interested in the connections or threads that overlap, that run through my life. And about the energies that connect them all. In my work I employ the labour intensive techniques of embroidery and appliqué either on painted terraskin paper (mounted on wood panel ), or on hand dyed vintage textiles or handmade felt.” Blue Moon acrylic paint, vintage textiles and stitching on terraskin paper mounted on board 10 x 10 Shawn O'Hagan The Queen Moon is on her Throne acrylic paint, vintage textiles and stitching on terraskin paper mounted on board 20 x 20 Shawn O'Hagan See the complete inventory of available works by Shawn O'Hagan here: https://www.emmabutler.com/ohagan.htm #emmabutlergallery #shawnohagan #textileartist #textileart #iwd #canadianartist #canadianart #newfoundlandartist #nlarts

We continue our celebration of the wonderful women artists the gallery has had the honour and pleasure of representing over the decades, with the unforgettable and talented Anne Meredith Barry. “One of the many things that fascinates me about making paintings is that I'm dealing with the juxtaposition of opposites - concerns that are formal, conceptual, technical, aesthetic, thoroughly pre-planned, intuitive and haphazard - so that I must constantly adjust my ways of thinking and doing." On this stormy International Women's Day, the gallery may be closed, but nothing can deter us from celebrating our wonderfully-talented women artists, beginning with the sensational Susan Paterson. Susan Paterson's gorgeous, still-life oil paintings are in numerous private, public and corporate collections across the country and she most recently won the FWSD (Fashion Week San Diego) Award, the Purchase Award and Second Place in the Still Life Category in the 16th International Art Renewal Center Salon. “My work evokes the past, both in technique and in subject. I do highly detailed studies of landscape, florals and everyday objects, capturing the subtleties of the light, colour and textures that are so fascinating but so often overlooked. When I’m painting I love getting lost in the details and the challenge of creating an illusion that explains how I feel about what I see. I’m fascinated by light and how it describes form, changes colours, is reflected back and disappears into the dark depths of a background. I usually work in subdued colours, preferring the subtleties of the subject to stand out. I get great pleasure from slowing down, spending hours intently observing and trying to capture the incredible beauty that surrounds us." FPSO Sea Rose Oil on canvas 20" x 35" Barbara Pratt "FPSO Sea Rose" was painted during the boom days of the oil industry here in Newfoundland. The FPSO itself, is a huge ship; not an attractive one but very impressive. It was moored in Conception Bay for part of one summer and attracted much interest among the local population in the area. At night, it sparkled like a jewel and in that sense it found its meaning for our province. I chose to depict it this way, as a glittering hope for our success and prosperity. That something so unattractive during the day could be so transformed at night struck me as an important metaphor for the oil industry at large." - Barbara Pratt To inquire about this painting and others by Barbara Pratt, please contact the gallery by phone: 709-739-7111 or by email: [email protected] #emmabutlergallery #barbarapratt #artcollector #canadianart #canadianartist #contemporaryartist #newfoundlandartist #newfoundlandart #contemporaryart #fpsosearose #energynl #newfoundland #canadianartcollector #nlarts #conceptionbay

Kitsch commodities versus thoughtful reflections of history and identity; lowbrow versus sophistication; tourist versus local; vulnerability versus confidence; fine art versus illustration; accessibility versus quality. My hope is to create an initial sense of tension that nurtures awareness around false either-or choices that often influence our sense of self and sense of place.
