Spring takes a long time to come to Newfoundland. But it's still a time of newness and this past weekend, the coltsfoot finally started blooming in my yard. I also learned a couple of fun new skills - glass cutting and soldering! My friend's dad Dave came to my studio and showed me some basic stained glass techniques. It was wonderful to watch him work and to see how he held the tools in his hands. As with most things, it's WAY harder than it looks, but I'm happy to report that I made all of these and didn't cut or burn myself 🙂 Any learning process involves making lots of mistakes, and letting go of perfection is essential. These little paintings are all imperfect in their own beautiful ways, but hand-made things always are. I think that's part of their charm. I created this print of Cow Head, Newfoundland as part of @ruthanderprints online "kitchen drypoint" class through @spikeprintstudio in Bristol (UK). I decided to try printing it on a press at @manhattangraphicscenter , because the time and effort needed to get the ink to transfer by hand put pressure marks in the paper and sometimes led to the paper drying before the ink has fully transferred. These four prints are the result. I like them, for the most part, and they were easier than printing by hand. I didn't have any troubles with marks in the paper, nor with it buckling as it dried - possibly the press actually squeezed some of the water out of the paper so it dried faster? The ink seemed to dry much faster too. I brought them home the day I printed them, instead of leaving them on the racks to dry, and put them under a stack of books for a few days at home. None of them is perfect, and my photos aren't quite capturing the color of the paper (it is a warm off-white), but I like them! #drypoint #drypointetching #kitchenlitho #newyorkartist #newfoundlandart #cowhead #coastart #oceanart #oceanartist

✨️ New art!! ✨️ I can't even explain how relieved I am to have this one finished. Some canvases are a struggle from start to finish, and others just flow out of the paintbrush like magic. There was nothing magical about this one. At times it was actually downright stressful. But it's canvases like this one that show me how much I've grown as an artist and a person in the past 3 or 4 years since the world changed and our lifestyle changed too. These days, I find myself with more patience to tackle problems. I'm more determined not to give up on myself and others. And I give myself, and everyone around me, a lot more grace to be as imperfect as we need to be. Four years ago I would have put this canvas in the corner at the first sign of trouble. I would have hidden it and pretended it didn't exist and not mentioned the problems to a soul. This week, I talked about this cursed canvas with people close to me. I asked their opinions, asked why it wasn't working. I vented just a little bit. And I took the feedback and used it to look more objectively at what I was creating. Next phase in my first reduction lino print. I made half a dozen proofs of the first layer, in different shades of light blue. Then in black marker and white paint, I drew on them to figure out what else I should leave white, what may be blue, and what will be black.
