FOUR FOR FRIDAY chapter seventy nine. Still moving though the C box, we come to one of the 17 records Billy Childish released as The Chatham Singers, as opposed to the Chatham Forts, and seeing as it’s the same three members, I really couldn’t explain the distinction, but maybe there isn’t one. At any rate, this 45, a bluesy version of one of his most famous songs, “All My Feelings Denied” was released on Damaged Goods in 2020. So then we come to Cheap Trick, and I must explain that I have HELLA Cheap Trick singles but I keep them in one of my 70’s boxes as they (largely) date to that era with few that crept into the 80’s. These were released later though - the Sup Pop 45 is from 1997 and the Epic Legacy one is from 2004 - so they ended up in my regular or “main” collection, mostly punk and indie stuff, which is what I’ve been posting weekly since November of 2022. It all makes sense in my own mind, and really all that matters is that I know where a record is. So yeah, Cheap Trick haven’t been in my Top 10 since I was a teenager, but interestingly they are still in the Top 15, the only band from that era of my life who ranks anywhere near that high. Other artists I was listening to at that time (I’m looking at you Ted Nugent) wouldn’t even crack the Top 500, so it’s a rather remarkable feat. Finally we come to the only Cheater Slicks record I still own, the 84 Ford 79 single on Estrus from 1992, which I needed to keep the Estrus discography complete. I had so many of their records at one time, but there were always records I wanted more, so somethings gotta give. This collection is always changing, more coming in than going out lately, but that wasn’t always the case. Lord High Fixers at Empty Bottle, Chicago, IL, November 18, 1995 by Bryan Bedell Bryan Bedell @bryannoise was very kind to share these photos along with additional info on how they came about: “These were taken for an interview with Tim Kerr for the first issue of my Vespa ‘zine, “2strokebuzz” (Like most ‘zines, it lasted four issues, but then it became a blog that lasted 20 years). Tim Kerr is one of the greatest human beings ever, and a delight to talk with. I met him before the show (at Empty Bottle, I was) a little familiar with the Big Boys and the Monkeywrench, but none of his other work. I left that show a fan for life of anything he does. He was *so* friendly and gave me all sorts of time. When I later sent him copies of the zine, he mailed me a really nice thank you letter with what is probably my favorite t-shirt, even now that it has a big bleach stain. FIVE YEARS LATER, I went to see him DJing at a bar in Chicago, figuring there’d be no way he’d remember me. As I walked in, he ran right over to say hi, like old friends. TEN YEARS AFTER THAT, I went to his art opening in Skokie and he excused himself from talking to a few local music-scene luminaries to come over and say hello. Friendliest, wisest, coolest person I've ever met. His guitar playing, art, style, and personality are unique, and everything he does builds community. Estrella 20/20 - Afro Mexicana (10", ES1020, 11/1999) (part 3 of 3) I always wondered the meaning of the band’s name, so Hiro explained: “Estrella is the STAR in Spanish. 20/20 means perfect, Atsushi said. When vision test, if they could see perfectly they say 20/20 vision, right? We Japanese say 2.0. There is a story of our name. First, we formed kind of lo-fi style band with four members. Then guitarist quit that band so the other three, Atsushi, Masato and me, try to make different band. We named it 20/20. We knew there were 20/20 in America but we thought they already broke up. We've been playing using name with 20/20 for a few years. Few years later, our first show in America was in Austin (Emo’s). Before our show a lady and two guys came up to me and asked “are you 20/20?”. I said “yes”. “Well…” they said and tried to show me some documents. I said “I can’t speak english!!”. What happened is few days before the show, Tim (Kerr, we stayed at his house) said to us that maybe US 20/20 will come to our show then they will claim about rights of the name 20/20. Tim promised them we won’t use 20/20 anymore, but the tour has been already decided so we promised we gonna put "from Japan" during the tour. When we stayed in LA on that tour, one guy looked after us. One night we walked around college, he looked up the sky then said “oh Estrella!!”. We stoped and quickly asked “What did you said? What that mean?? Sounds good!”. He explained to us that Estrella is Spanish and it means star. We really liked that. So we decided to put Estrella and 20/20 together. Estrella 20/20 - Afro Mexicana (10", ES1020, 11/1999) (part 2 of 3) (continued from previous post) These typefaces were designed by Herb Lubalin and Milton Glaser. Not exactly ethnic cultural slumming here. And yes, that African/Mexican woman is wearing a bandolero (bullet belt). Why? I dunno. That photo was originally used to promote an American digest-size magazine for Black Americans in the 1960's called "JET". Not very Mexican OR Japanese. Somehow you take all these diverse seemingly unrelated elements (the colors of the Mexican flag, some leather jacket gang chicks, etc,) and it all fits perfectly and seamlessly. They all FEEL right. At this point in my career, i've been doing this stuff for so long that is how I make creative decisions now, "does it FEEL right"? I trust my instincts. And the funny thing that most fans probably didn’t know is that it was an ironic nod to the “PUNK” advertising stickers you could see on some french rock records in the late seventies. I got to work with Art Chantry who was like my idol at this time. Here’s what I’ve got: Estrus ad, 3 color pasteups with printer marks/notes. The rubylith overlays were done by me at the time. The bottom layer b/w was provided by Art C and Dave at Estrus. And then the printed piece and a black plate negative. Art had sent me notes on how to do it, and I actually made a mistake, the main ghouls teeth are supposed to be white not green, I didn’t cut that out on the overlay, whoops! There was no “proofing” back then. We were using snail mail. After that, Art sent his own color separations! The black and white part is a copy from Art Chantry, not his original cut and paste, which he kept, but it has sharpie touch ups on it. It just shows the technology of the time. I could have done this all on computer, but honestly I didn’t know how, so I used the computer only to typeset the body copy and everything else was done by hand with cut and paste.” Thanks are due to Tim Burton @the.other.tim.burton for digging these pasteups. Photographer Stefanie Gendreau’s name is misspelled and, on the Estrus book, Chris DeGon name was mistakenly omitted as co-designer. Here you’ll find some interesting bits and pieces from several stages of the whole Watts operation: Design, recording, live. Chris DeGon (Bass player and co-designer of the cover with Art Chantry) speaks: All anyone knew is that I borrowed the jacket for the weekend, and then we had a meeting at Chantry's studio. The presentation went something like this: "Think: close up fringe with amped up colors, posterized, or high contrast enough as to be abstract on the front and revealed on the back to be a jacket." Upper left: the four of us with our backs turned-each wearing fringe coats? Too Grand Funk or too Osmonds? Upper center: upside down jacket abstract with wavy xerox smeared logo? Upper right: photo with someone wearing it, showing head, shoulders, and making no mistake that it's a jacket. Lower right: nothing but fringe? Maybe a border? Maybe a wide border with small photo? Lower center: right side up. Lower right: right side up with more stars than fringe. "and then on the back...." I was stopped and told the back had already been decided. The only thing required was for me to select a photo of myself. I chose a great Jacob Covey shot from our first show.
