Indiana Wants Me Vol. 1. 2023. Oakland, CA by Mark Murrmann. Mark Murrmann has lived in California for many years now, but he is as Indiana as Gulcher Records and...uhh...Euchre. This photo zine documents a smattering of his Hoosier state shots from 1991-2023. Desolation, decay, home-cooked meals and folks who either just did or are about to do some sketchy shit. It's easy to get lost in many of his photos. Mark's photography has a lot of character and plenty of mood. I come back to photos where I previously didn't see anything and find something new. He's great at capturing a moment where someone's face tells multiple stories. He also took my favorite photo of Billy Childish, ever while crushed upside down in a crowd, but that's beside the point. My copy came with an Indiana postcard affixed to the cover, but like any person who is bad at taking care of things, I already took it off and mailed it to someone. A wonderful book by David Pace and Stephen Wirtz, design by Victor Levie, published by Schilt Publishing in 2019, with an introduction by Mark Murrmann: “The source material used here came from World War II, but don’t mistake this for a book of war photography. It’s not even really a book of photography. You are holding a book rooted in photography, made of pieces of photographic images, but calling it a photobook would be a stretch. ‘Images in Transition’ is a body of work rooted in history, photojournalism, and technology. Ultimately, it is a book of art.” Our daily lives are so saturated with image-sharing that it’s difficult to remember a time when instantaneity was perceived as more magical than mundane. But the evolution of photography in the digital realm transformed more than our daily, inconsequential imaging habits; it also radically changed the state of photojournalism. In an era when photographers sent rolls of film (housed inside secure packages) directly to publications, creating contact sheets and images for stories with rapid turnover, each minute in the air was time lost. This prompted the invention of the wirephoto, a technology that today feels just as magical and surreal as watching a daguerreotype develop for the first time. Invented in the 1920s—predating our current texting methods by many, many decades—a wirephoto was the transmission of a picture by telegraph, telephone or radio. 2020 marks the 75th Anniversary of the end of WWII. ⠀ Since many years Stephen Wirtz, owner of the now closed Stephen Wirtz Gallery in San Francisco, has been fascinated by wirephotos from the WWII and eventually formed an extensive collection of originals. ⠀ Because of the poor quality and unknown authorship, the photos have hardly any value on the market, so together with photographer and friend David Pace he transformed them into something that art world could relate. ⠀ They scanned, radically re-cropped, dramatically enlarged portions of the archival photos. They exposed the artifacts of the wirephoto technology, and by that they reversed the intentions of the wartime retouchers, who not only corrected the imperfections created during the transmission process, but from time to time even introduced new content to support the narrative of war and ethical victory. ⠀ The collaboration resulted in a book “Images in Transition”. It is a book about art, history and history of photography. The essay by Mark Murrmann is thought-provoking. Original untouched wirephotos can be found at the end of the book, as well as the diligent description of the wirephoto technology, from transmission to transformation. ⠀ “Images in Transition” is currently on display in Schilt Gallery, which can be visited by appointment with maximum of two people at a time, from Monday to Sunday! “All the photos used in “Images in Transition - Wirephotos 1938-1945” were sent to the U.S. media market. The country from which the images originated sent these images with the intent of selling their view of the war. They are part of a narrative, a storytelling style essential to winning their war. ⠀ British photos emphasize the officers and a certain rigidity in the images. American photos, though overall a bit more varied, carry a certain sense of heroism of the everyday soldier, along with a grim, foreboding representation of the enemy. The German images tend to be aggressive. The Russian photos lean heavily on propagandistic techniques and are sometimes heavily retouched. Parts of images appear to have been removed, ostensibly because they didn’t fit the official narrative. ⠀ Russians weren’t the only ones doing the retouching though. Retouching was standard practice in newsrooms preparing images for publication. It’s not hard to find images bearing traces of a heavy-handed journalistic re-toucher. The cover image, a heavy splash of water accentuated by thick, black lines, represents an extreme version of retouching: the entire splash may be painted to create an image that did not exist on film. Another photo simply has a heavy X over a man’s face, indicating it should not be printed.
