{CONFESSION} Sometimes, I wear my mom's sweater. My mom used to wear this sweater when we were living in the Arden Trailer Park back in the '70's in the Comox Valley, BC. It was a catalogue order from Simpson Sears and she ordered it in a few different colours, but this is the one I remember her wearing the most. It's covered in 'pills' and the buttons are wobbly (I've made a mental note to spend some time securely attaching the buttons again so I don't lose any) but it is 1000% comforting and cozy to me. I remember my mom being the happiest during this time, when I was a teenager, and I can still see her in my mind's eye, sitting at the kitchen table, a coffee in front of her, wearing this sweater, a smile spread across her face that would light up her eyes. This sweater represents a hug and a smile and much needed support from my mama when I need it most. I can remember the first time Stephanie shared this photo with me after testing this pattern (I used to have a Facebook pattern testers group years ago) and how taken I was with those squishy cheeks and the beautiful light in this image! Sometimes, a simple garter stitch bonnet is exactly what's required to allow the focus to be on just baby. I worked this bonnet up using a mohair silk blend on 5mm needles, allowing for a loose, light knit. But, I'm not gonna lie - it was a bit of a bitch working with such light yarn and a larger needle as I hadn't yet moved into using @officialchiaogoo needles. Honestly, I've found that Chiaogoo has the most amazing, pointy ended needles that makes working with lighter yarns so much easier. My first (worsted weight) sleeper design is about as basic as you can get. No gusset. No feet. And, a very simple button closure. It was me dipping my toe in the water, so to speak. It was my first step into designing something bigger than a bonnet. I'm still really proud of myself for starting at the beginning, having no idea how I was going to accomplish the design, and then figuring it out. Cheeks for weeks! 👶😁💗 This is what I call a 'starter bonnet'. And this style in particular is the Piper bonnet, designed way back in 2014. This starter version is worked up in a worsted weight, acrylic yarn on 5mm (US8) needles. Think craft store yarn from @michaelsstores that gets softer and softer each time you launder it. It's great for beginning photographers because they can begin to build their stash but only have to put out $20 Cdn. It's also perfect for beginning knitters as it only requires that you know the knit stitch, the purl stitch, and how to knit two stitches together.
