Upgrading my favourite Martin Scorsese film to 4K, yes please! With a director with such an impressive filmography, it can be hard to pick a favourite. But The Departed truly stands out in my opinion among Scorsese’s other films. From an all star cast with incredible performances from the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg and Vera Farmiga, a thrilling cat and mouse game between an Irish gang and the local police department in South Boston full of double crosses, betrayal and twists and turns that earned the film four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Director for Scorsese himself, it’s one film that I can enjoy over and over again and never tire of. Is “The Shining” (1980) Stanley Kubrick’s best film? I can never answer that. Is it one of the best films of all time? Without a doubt, yes. Of course, being a Kubrick film, the soundtrack would be something very special. Similar to the modernist artistic-music repertoire he first explored in “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968), Kubrick left the process of matching passages of music to film to the discretion of music editor Gordon Stainforth. Wendy Carlos wrote the title track and ‘Rocky Mountains’ with Rachel Elkind providing sweeping vocals. Hired to compose the entire soundtrack, Carlos had his work almost completely rejected - in pure Kubrick fashion - about two months before the film’s premiere in the USA. In the symphonic part, the pieces by Béla Bartók, Ligeti and Krzysztof Penderecki sound extremely creepy and eerie in the context of this film. In fact, every orchestral work here feels like it was written with this film in mind. The music perfectly evokes the film, and for me this also works the other way around. The LP soundtrack album was withdrawn due to issues with music licensing. . 🎞️ The Shining (1980) 🎥 Stanley Kubrick • Stephen King refused to let Jack Nicholson play "Jack Torrance" in "The Shining" (1980). The writer felt that Torrance's character should show madness but "gradually." Although Torrance was a character with a difficult past related to alcohol and violence, he tried to be a good person. And according to the original vision, Jack Nicholson's look could suggest a somewhat more disturbed, dark and violent personality from the beginning. However, this was precisely what director Stanley Kubrick wanted, who opted for a Torrance already possessing a dark personality that would gradually be "freed" and "empowered" within "Overlook", giving the character a somewhat more complex dimension. . and evil. This is one of the many licenses that bothered King, who ended up hating this film. In any case, it is known that the first outlines of the script were given to some famous actors of the time such as Robert De Niro and Harrison Ford. De Niro himself later stated that after reading the script he had nightmares for several nights.
