In conversations with friends and family, I’ve found a common thread of emotional distress appearing time after time. Everyone feels a little off, but no one can articulate how. Clearly it's a direct response to our living situation, our financial woes, the endless dystopian news cycle, civil unrest, our joblessness, our president, climate concerns, our loneliness. But when pressed to talk about our emotions, we often describe them as sad, depressed, fearful. While not untrue, the terms we often employ are so broad that it hardly describes anything, let alone points us in a direction to combat those emotions. It’s like walking into a Home Depot and telling the guy behind the desk that you want blue paint. That’s great, but there are thousands of hues of blue. Are you feeling periwinkle? Labradora? Zaffre? Palatinate Byzantine? By expanding our emotional vocabulary we build “emotional granularity”. Studies have shown that micro specificity in how we’re feeling actually helps our brain figure out what kind of action to take, and when to take it. So what the hell is this we’re all feeling? Researcher Jonathan Zecher revives a word describing an emotion felt by 5th century Greek monks who were cloistered in monasteries: acedia. Theologian Thomas Aquinas described acedia as the “sorrow of the world”. John Cassian, a 5th century monk, details it as being “horrified at where he is, disgusted with his room. It does not allow him to stay still in his cell or to devote any effort to reading” and “such bodily listlessness and yawning hunger as though he were worn by a long journey or a prolonged fast. Next he glances about and sighs that no one is coming to see him. Constantly in and out of his cell, he looks at the sun as if it were too slow in setting.” Sound familiar? So next time you’re feeling…something, take care to explore it. Don’t be so quick to slap a clinical term like “depression” or “anxiety” on it. Journal about it. Break it down. What are the individual emotional ingredients that make up the pea soup of emotion you’re wading through? The more precise you can be the better your body, and your heart, can work to find balance.

A friend once called me the most efficient person she knows and I was so proud of that because I designed my life to work that way. Multitasking to save myself time. Distracting myself with a podcast when I do chores I don't particularly like. Always grouping, organizing, patterning. But when I really look back, I don't see all the time I supposedly saved. I don't see all of the extra progress I made. What I see is a mess of diluted experiences. The other day I put on my headphones, laid down on my couch, closed my eyes, and listened to an album I've heard a thousand times. I can't remember a single one of those times where all I did was listen. This was maybe the first time I wasn't driving, doing the dishes, folding clothes, cleaning the house. This was maybe the first time I didn't 𝘶𝘴𝘦 the art, I experienced it. The music wasn't the background, it was the ground. And the walls and the sky and the air. And it was beautiful. The more I practice this, the more I realize it's not just the art that suffers when we multitask. It's everything. It's us. We're built to experience this Universe, we're just not built to experience it all at once.

I know you already know this but I’ll tell you again: You’re allowed to have ordinary days. You wouldn’t believe it swiping through Instagram but it’s true. You’re allowed to be okay with feeling and being absolutely, incredibly unremarkable. We’ve somehow managed to create this world where we worship the extraordinary and it’s killing us. We’re taught that if we don’t reach for the stars we’ll never be happy. We’re taught to celebrate the milestones and the accomplishments but to skip over the stuff in between. But when I really think about it, some of my best days are the days I didn’t finish my to-do list, I didn’t create art, I didn’t fall in love, I didn’t explore a new country, I didn’t watch a sunset from a cliff in the rain. It took me a while to be okay with that. I’m still not great at it. Some days I’ll give myself the gift of sitting in the sun and reading a book and I’m so grateful for it. I treasure that quiet time. I know I deserve it and I know it’s good for me and yet, there is a voice. A devil in my brain that tells me I’m wasting my time. That I should be out there clawing and fighting my way through this ordinary so that I can reach whatever I’ve convinced myself is on the other side. I feel guilt for using my precious, limited time to stay right where I am. Even if that moment is beautiful and perfect. Even if that moment is medicine. We have to remind ourselves that life is made up of more than our accomplishments. That we are greater than the sum of our parts. All the parts, not just the shiny ones. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither were you. It’s your time. Spend it being a human being.
