It's World Penguin Day! 🐧 This is the penguin colony at Boulders Beach, just along the coast from Cape Town. The colony of African penguins started back in 1983 with just a pair of penguins. There are now about 3000 penguins here, yet they're still sadly endangered. Visiting the colony brings much needed funds to the conservation of these very cute waddlers. Visiting the beach is a wonderful day trip to escape from the bustle of Cape Town. Visiting an authentic Maasai village whilst on safari is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the local culture and even learn a few new skills. This is one of the villages near the Ngorongoro crater where the Maasai live within family groups known as manyatas. Their simple houses are made of sticks mixed with soil and dung, with no windows but with a small hole out the top for smoke to escape from. It takes the women in the family around 8 days to build one of these houses from scratch. On a visit, you'll usually be greeted with traditional dances and singing before having the opportunity to speak with some of the villagers. Not only is Dunia Camp a fabulous camp, it’s also leading the way in female employment in the safari world. In a historically male dominated industry, this camp is solely run by women, from the safari guides and security officers, to the chefs, housekeepers and managers. It’s always been incredibly difficult for females to find careers in roles perceived to be too difficult for them such as safari guiding where they need to know how to fix issues with the vehicles, let alone being able to drive in a country where few women do. On #worldgorilladay, we're thrilled to hear that the population of mountain gorillas has now gone above 1,000 for the first time. In Bwindi Forest alone, numbers are thought to have doubled since the 90s. Conservation efforts and veterinary care have predominantly been funded by the increase in sustainable tourism in the area. Zambia is THE place to go to on safari if you're interested in heading out on two feet. Mountain gorillas are the largest species of gorilla in the world and keeping themselves well fed is no mean feat. These gentle giants spend a large part of their day either searching for food, or eating! Gorillas are mostly herbivores, save for the odd ant or snail, and will happily chomp on over 140 different plant species. The larger male silverback gorillas can consume up to a staggering 34kgs of food per day. They're also not big water drinkers, mainly getting their liquid intake from succulent leaves. They're also surprisingly good conservationists and will never overfeed in one place, instead moving on to the next to allow each area to regrow more effectively.
