A few weeks ago, while immersed in the Great Migration across the Serengeti, I photographed zebras resting their heads on each other’s backs as a way to maintain vigilance and protect the herd from predators. This positioning allows some zebras to rest while others keep watch, effectively creating a 360-degree field of vision around the herd. This behavior enhances their ability to spot predators approaching from any direction, significantly improving their chances of survival in the wild. Repost @faunus_wildlife In 1993, the young nation of Namibia set out to conserve its Black Rhino herd from the threat of poaching and habitat loss. In doing so, it created the Rhino Custodian Program, what is today arguably one of the most effective rhino conservation programs on the continent's. So how does it work, and how did it benefit Black Rhinos? In short, the Custodian program takes state-owned black rhinos (all rhinos are legally government property in Namibia), and places them in the care of private owners, who benefit from their presence through ecotourism or through hunting. By doing this, it created a reason for landowners to spend millions of dollars restoring populations of this critically endangered species on their property. So successful has it been, that now around 33% of all Namibias rhinos, some 760 individuals, are under the care of private landowners or community concessions. Why the success? Simply put, because Wildlife with Value, is Wildlife Conserved! By putting value on rare species, it motivates landowners to do everything they can to preserve them, and gives them the means to do so. Namibias Black Rhinos are safe for now, but the poaching threat seems to be growing each year, as poaching gangs from further south and east turn to Namibian ranches as "easy pickings". This increased security threat highlights the importance of diversifying the rhino economy, possibly by legalising the horn trade, or allowing more bulls to be harvested out of thriving herds.Here at Faunus, we're committed to using our collective data pool to help protect the Black Rhinos in Namibia today, whilst also identifying the places where the next generation may one day thrive. Last week we told you about the little male calf that we are hand raising 🍼🦒at Ruko Community Conservancy and the resources to support him, but did you know Save Giraffes Now and the team also had to construct a stable and paddock? Here is a glimpse of the space constructed to keep him safe overnight! The stable itself is a staggering 3.7 meters (12 feet) tall which will allow the young calf to have a safe home as he grows – possibly up to a year and a half! Recently we dart immobilized a whole herd of blesbok! Blesbok (or blesbuck) are beautiful medium-sized antelopes. Blesbok have a distinctive white blaze on the face, which is called 'bles' in Afrikaans. Hence the name blesbok! These antelopes might not look fast, but they can run extremely fast, and have some impressive twists and turns when darted from the helicopter! These blesbok were moved to another farm. Once in the truck, the herd was split up over several compartments to prevent overcrowding. All animals get plastic pipes on the horns (both males and females have horns), to prevent possible injuries, and they received vitamins, anti-tick treatment and a tranquilizer to minimize stress. Before they are released in their new home, the pipes are of course taken off 😉 A big thanks to @simon_wildlife for flying and doing the transport of this special species! Did you know that during mid-19th century, this species was almost extinct? 🇬🇧Thompson’s gazelle (Eudorcas thomsonii) is a small species of antelope, with males weighting no more than 35 kg (77 lbs) while females are smaller, both genders posses horns, but in females these are short and slender. This gazelle is found in Tanzania and Kenya, with small populations in Somalia and South Sudan. When threatened, these antelopes can reach an amazing speed! And are actually the fourth-fastest land animal, after the cheetah (its main predator) reaching speed of between 80 to 90 km/h (50–55 mph). Cheetah mating game (part 1) These are photos from an encounter between a coalition of 3 male cheetahs and an adult female with subadult cubs (around 17 months at the time). The female is not willing to mate with the males, but they were persistent and kept her ‘hostage’ for the entire day. Cheetahs are one of the only wild cat species that don’t actively commit infanticide. Female cheetahs are not territorial and only a part of the male population actively defends territories. Meetings between males and females can be sporadic and when males have a possible mating opportunity their hormones seem to go in overdrive. I have seen coalition partners wound or try to mount each other in the excitement once confronted with an adult female. If the female is not in oestrus and reluctant to mate, it can be a stressful encounter for her during which she is constantly approached by the excited males.
