Perhaps the most recognizable member of the Equus genus (the same genus as horses and donkeys) is the zebra. The zebra is the national animal of Botswana, the Burchell's zebra, or bontequagga, (Equus quagga burchellii) is the only species of zebra found in Botswana. They are a migratory species and they generally migrate biannually in order to have access to lush grasses and water sources throughout the dry season. They are known as 'pioneer grazers' because they eat a broad range of grasses, leaves and young trees which helps to prepare plains for more specialized grazers that rely on shorter more nutrient-dense grasses. This makes them an important keystone species within the ecosystem. Their popular patterning has more to do than just look pretty. Each individual has a unique stripe patterning, kind of like human fingerprints. There are several hypotheses for why zebras have their distinctive look; the stripes could be protection from flies and bugs that spread disease, it could help with thermoregulation (different temperatures of black fur vs white fur could make the air around a zebra mildly turbulent - their own mini weather system!), or as a tactic to help confuse predators. The science is still out on why these stripes exist because it is incredibly difficult to study. I have just got back from the Okavango Delta in Botswana and it really reminded me just how special the Delta is. MEET TENDRAH! He's our assistant guide extraordinaire and is currently shadowing Feline Fields Vintage Camp's inimitable safari guide Thapelo Malatsi in order to build up the work experience needed for his guide's licence. Born near Betsha in the north of Botswana, the former farmer and chef decided guiding was where his heart was after working in several safari camps as a staff chef. So, in 2017 he got his assistant guide's licence and worked as a poler, taking people on mokoro safaris until 2020, when COVID19 hit. Rising majestically from where the Kgalagadi sands meet the rich dense vegetation of the Okavango wetlands. This visit once more reignited within me the Ancient ways of Being and Knowing that are deeply woven in my matrix. It filled my Being with state of awe and deep admiration. Tsodilo hills is known to have been a place of peace, refuge and spiritual fulfilment to different groups of people in the past and today.
