Sasseka relaxing in a marula tree, her tail casually draped down a branch, swaying gently in the breeze, as if the leopard is enjoying a leisurely afternoon siesta, with no cares in the world. Are you jealous? Well I was looking how she was relaxing there😝 Amazing! 🐆 Incredible that she had no care in the world, while there were multiple hyenas on the lookout just below her. She is obviously very well aware of the fact that these hyenas are not able to reach her, which gives her enough comfort to close her eyes. Special to be able to spend time with her, while being so chilled with our presence.

Widespread and fairly common, the population is however declining rapidly, especially in South Africa and outside protected areas. Threats include loss and fragmentation of habitat due to expanding rural communities, deforestation and cultivation, loss of nest sites from clearance for wood and agriculture, erosion from overgrazing, persecution, pesticides and poisoning, trade for traditional rituals, disease, electrocution, and even warfare. 🌳🚜 In addition, their low reproductive rate increases the risk of further declines and makes recovery more difficult. A decline of 30-49% across their range is projected over the next 94 years. Auch die Phönizier und Griechen züchteten Perlhühner, noch bevor das Haushuhn in Europa bekannt wurde. 🎨 In der frühen Neuzeit gelangte das Perlhuhn ein zweites Mal nach Europa, dieses Mal eingeführt von den Portugiesen. watchful eyes. 🌾🦁 Another wonderful day in the Kruger. Mid afternoon. We drove past the camp and turned left from the tar road onto the gravel road where we, only some short time later, recognised movements in the tall grass. As we had still plenty of time until gate closing time we stopped and investigated. We got excited as we realised the movement was a lion’s tail going up and down in the grass! 🌾 Some time later we were sure, there was a second one. 😍🦁🦁 After watching tails, paws and ears coming up and going down from time to time - without anything else happening in between for a loooong time - repeatedly in a two hours loop,😅 we got so rewarded. The two lion ladies that were laying in the grass decided we’ve been patient enough 😆 and so they sat up, watching carefully and focused what’s going on around them. We were super happy! And if this wasn’t awesome enough, the best was yet to come: they showed us their little ones which they were hiding in the tall grass the whole time.
