Cropton Forest EGB 30km Novice GER Completion 🏅 Benny first GER! 💛 And this horse deserves a medal 🎖️ By far the wettest, coldest ride I've ever done, it rained and rained and rained, the wind was bitter, and the horses were incredible 🦄 A really tough a route with challenging ground, thanks to a week of rain, following the wettest winter ever. But Benny was amazing, he just kept going, kept giving me his all, and we made it round. Our slowest ride yet, at 8.9kph, but you just couldn't have gone any faster. Lots of new challenges, gates, railway crossings, a ford that had turned into a river, and he just took it all in his stride. I worried about final vetting, wet and windy weather is horrible to vet in, trying to get horses cooled down and washed off, but not letting them get cold is a real challenge. I pretty much took his saddle off, and put his rug straight on, only washed his girth area, chest and face. We presented to vet in just 15 minutes, with a heart rate of 50, which was incredible considering the conditions 🌧️ After having a little chill out time in the stable after getting home, we got Benny washed off with some nice warm water and he enjoyed his massage pad, haylage and ice boots. I’ve never been a fair weather rider, but since having Tig I’ve found I’m a lot less keen to clamber aboard when it’s blowing a gale. This week we’ve had every possible weather thrown at us, but instead of using that as an excuse not to ride I’ve been playing within my comfort zones, working on getting relaxation in the walk and starting to encourage the stretch. Jigsaw update 💙 Jigsaw is doing well, his asthma has been stable over winter, and we've managed to avoid any flair ups! So fantastic really! 🙌 The combination of Pollenex and Immuplus have been maintaining him perfectly. Thank you Global Herbs 💚 I was a bit worried heading into winter, about laminitis, and how the change in temperature and weather was going to affect the grass. With Jigsaw only being diagnosed with Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) in summer, this was the first winter that I've worried about laminitis. He's always been an easy horse to maintain weight wise, if anything more of a poor doer than a good doer. But it's not all about weight, some horses can be in great condition, and suffer hormonal imbalances that lead to laminitis. Which is what's so scary. I started Jigsaw on Metabolic Tonic not long after initial diagnosis, and his insulin levels gradually came down, and have been consistently within range since. I've not really made any routine changes, because I can't. His breathing and arthritis require him to be out full time, and his feed and forage were already suitable options for a laminitic. So the Metabolic Tonic has really shown its worth! I've still worried about every frost, and now it's getting warmer, I'm worried about the grass coming through, but I'm just that kind of person! Super Minnie did me proud yet again today✨🥹 We ventured to Badgeworth for some dressage and from the moment Minnie left the field, she behaved incredibly well, it was like a different horse (we could actually stand still🤣)!! Our first test was Prelim 7, scoring 68% for a 2nd, and then we went onto prelim 2 for 70%+ for another 2nd place, just beaten by @francescalawrence.eventing🙈 We’ve also qualified for the South West Dressage champs next month which will be a nice trip to Hartpury, where I studied, so it will be great to catch up with everyone!! Henry had his dancing shoes on today and was completely awesome 🤩 Our highest scores in elementary with the first test scoring 69.83% (video) finishing 2nd overall and 🥇1st in our section, we had a couple of mistakes in our second test but still 66.13% for a win 🥇 in our section and overall 3rd! So proud that finally we got the work in the arena that we’ve got at home - so excited for ror winter champs with him now 🤞🥰 Then tiger had 2 medium tests - he had 8 minutes to warm up as the ele tests ran late and they pushed on through with the mediums and he was just tense throughout, he was better in the second test but annoyingly I cost us 6marks for going wrong twice 🙉 so wasn’t our day but we have some work to do and see if swapping him back to his snaffle works better before next week 🤞 and actually considering he was tense some good marks in parts still which is always promising 👌💖 #LoveYourRoR #retrainingofracehorses #fedonallenandpage

How much water should a horse drink when competing? Does your horse refuse to drink when you are away from home? Some horses won’t drink at competitions due to stress or distractions. When staying away competing for longer periods you may have to use water that has not been sourced from home, some horses are fussy as water from a different area may taste different to them. It is important to know how much your horse usually drinks to see if they are drinking enough, but an average horse will drink between 20 and 50 litres of water a day. Keeping a horse hydrated is important for their all-round health, digestive transit, and performance when competing. Ensuring your horse drinks enough, especially when competing, can be tricky but implementing some extra measures such as feeding a wet, soaked feed can help to increase water consumption when it matters the most. Factors that impact a horse’s water consumption: • Diet. • Workload. • How much they sweat. • Environmental factors, such as hot or humid weather. Haywood Oaks EGB 81km Part 2 He was much less enthusiastic on this loop, but still found the energy to spook at things! So we just plodded on. We'd completed the first 64km at a decent speed, so no need to push him, we could just take our time. I found he switched off a bit when we walked through deep or uneven bits of going, but once trotting again, he seemed happy to keep going, but not as fast as before. Fair enough, he'd already done a lot! We finished loop 3 with not a lot of fuel left in the tank. He drank well again out on course, even managed a puddle drink! But he still wasn't eating well. He's obviously tired at this point. We worked on getting him cool, ready to vet. His heart rate wasn't coming down as well as it did previously. And despite not only our efforts, but some help from fellow riders, I knew we weren't going make it through the vet. He vetted with a heart rate of 70, I was devastated to be spun on heart rate for the third time in a row. But he was sound, and all other checks OK. The vet was kind and had a chat about things, I expressed my concerns about him not eating much, and that I'd contemplated elevating at 64km, due to that. We discussed his work leading up to the ride, and plans for the rest of the season. The vet was very supportive, not all of them are, he's not a ‘typical’ endurance horse, and people seem to hang onto that. Whilst I know he's not the usual type for the sport, I see no reason he can't do it. And the vet agreed. She did explain how bigger horses require more fitness training, need more crewing, and are generally harder work to get fit, and maintain fitness. But commented how well he looked, his weight and muscle being perfect, and she could tell that we'd worked hard to get him here. So it just wasn't our day, for whatever reason. I asked if I should try an 80km again, she said yes, so that's the plan, but not just yet. It's time for rest now, then we'll regroup and head to a ride I know we can do. Haywood Oaks EGB 81km GER Another ride, another fail, and I'm kicking myself this time. Part 1 The ride started off well, we were first to arrive, Oakley got off the trailer and enjoyed the grass, had a sloppy feed while I set up ready for vet gates, and seemed happy and settled. Pre ride vetting done, another sloppy feed eaten, time for off! We headed out on loop one (32km) and Oakley was good, very keen, a bit spooky! But settled into a nice rhythm after just a few Kms. Loop one flew by, and it was over in a flash, into the vet gate, passed, and now into our first hold. Oakley normally eats really well, from the second we come in, till I get on to head back out. But he didn't seem very interested, he did eat a little, but nowhere near as much as usual. We didn't worry too much, as he'd had plenty to eat prior to starting, 2 sloppy feeds since arriving at the venue, his breakfast at home before travelling, plus plenty of haylage. So we headed out for loop 2 (32km). Loop 2 was good, we joined the other 80km riders, and rode most of this loop together. Which was really nice. Oakley chose to lead for a lot of the time, occasionally slotting behind to have a rest. He was well behaved, and we got back to the venue still in our group. Into vetting, passed and into our hold. Oakley still wasn't interested in eating much, just had a little nibble really. He'd drank really well on this second loop, and continued to drink well in the hold. He was looking tired at this point, but had already completed 64km, so that's allowed. But this combined with him not eating much did make me question if I should go out on our final loop? Was he ready for loop 3? I wasn't sure, very much sat on the fence of if I should take him back out, or elevate at 64km. I spoke with my crew who felt the same, so I really wasn't sure. I spoke with some more experienced riders, who reassured me, and reminded me that it is only 17km, and he'd passed the vet with no concerns. Plus he'd eaten plenty earlier in the day, and had been drinking really well. I still sat on the fence, but with this being a 30 minute hold, I couldn't ponder any longer, so I tacked up, and off we went.

High Fibre Low Starch Diet. Horses are trickle-feeding herbivores that have evolved to consume a diet rich in fibre, but low in starch. Oakley update 🧡 After a wet and miserable winter, I'm really looking forward to getting Oakley back out competing! He's looking and feeling fantastic, better than he's ever done. Eventhough I've not had him out training as much as planned due to the weather 🌧️🙄 We have our first ride booked for 6th April, Haywood Oaks, tomorrow! I'm still a little on the fence about what distance to do, with less training than I'd have liked, I worry he's not as fit as I want. But he certainly looks and feels plenty fit enough 😆 Luckily we have the option to elevate, so I can stop at a vet gate if I want. We've been doing a few decent rides at home for several weeks now, and I always forget how much fitness they hold on to from the previous season. So I don't think I'm giving him enough credit. With the countdown on for his first ride, I'm confident he'll go out and give it his all! He's got a new saddle this season, an endurance saddle! But that's a whole post on it's own, so I'll get to that separately 😆 I'm hoping I can remember what I need to pack for a ride... I've got all of Oakleys vet gate bits ready, bins, buckets and feeds. I've been adding in a little bit of our vet gate Feeds for the past few weeks now. So normally, day to day, Oakley eats Soothe&Gain and Fast Fibre. But for vet gates, I like to give him options. Vet gates typically have a hold time of 30 or 40 minutes, during this time it's important that Oakley eats and drinks. He's not a big drinker, especially early in the ride, so Allen&Page soaked feeds are a perfect way to get some water in him 💦 I also find him easily distracted, so adding in different feeds keeps him eating for the full hold. My go to vet gate feeds are, Power&Performance, L Mix and Veteran Vitality. Horses can change what feed they fancy at different points in the ride. Having these options available for him gives him the opportunity to choose what he wants/needs. It's time for an update! I'll be totally honest here, winter has completely drained me 🫠 I'm tired, I'm fed up of the rain and mud, and I just want it to be summer already. Now the clocks have changed, I feel so much better, even though it's still muddy 😆 I'm grateful it's getting lighter, longer days allow for more training and less rushing around. The shorter days make my days off feel like some sort of challenge, trying to do all the jobs that need daylight in such a short amount of time! But we're nearly there, it's spring (sort of), and longer days (hopefully drier too), are just around the corner! We've had the odd sunny day, I can't wait for more! I'm sure I'm not the only one that's felt defeated by this winter, it's been a wet and muddy one. The clocks changed this weekend, wahoo! And just like that, it's April, so at least winter is definitely over, although I can't promise the mud will go away 😆 My leg is slowly getting more normal, but I'm still having weird nerve pain and I'm lacking any sensation in some areas. But hopefully it'll settle down as time goes on. After seeing the surgeon last week, he's confirmed there's some scar tissue in there, causing some of the tightness and pulling feelings I have. Again, this should hopefully resolve with time. But it's not enjoyable at the moment 🤦🏼♀️ I moved jobs in November, and it's taken some getting used to, moving from nights to days, starting a new course and learning a lot! My new job is fantastic, it offers lots of opportunities for development, and I feel very supported. Things my old job didn't give me. So I'm glad I made the change. The horses have been doing well recently, nibbling at the grass as it starts to get growing again. DIET REVIEW … Chimmy is certainly a summer horse I’ve come to realise … I’ve never had such a tricky horse to keep weight on over the winter months! However this winter we moved him onto @allenandpage Care & Gain (October-Jan) & then stepped up to Soothe & Gain (Jan - now); as I needed the weight on him to make into muscle. It’s really helped fill him out; and in turn his top line has developed - more to go, but our April boot camp is about to start! On paper, some would say it was a disappointing day but actually I couldn’t be more proud of the lad. We’ve definitely come to the conclusion that 80 is just a bit too small for him, we had some touch and go moments but he definitely was a different horse in the 90. It was blimmin massive and with minimal training, and a lack of seeing different venues - I’m blimmin chuffed. The big beefy fences he just absolutely charged at and stepped over them 🧡 We also came 2nd as a team representing @ctgarea_19 in the 80, but no placing as a team for the 90.
