Old Curiosity: BY BENJAMIN LINDSAY DECEMBER 29, 2021 “Back then I would have imagined that I wasn’t ambitious at all,” he reflects, “but if you look back at all the things I’ve done, the risks I took were rooted in ambition and the desire to make things happen.” There was no roadmap to pursuing the professional arts for an Irish teenager who played rugby and moonlighted in “amateur drama” at his aunt’s local theater company. “The thing to do was go to college, get a damn degree and get a serious job,” Dornan says. But he remembers feeling “dejected” in his environment when he was at school. “I don’t think I learned anything while I was there for a year, but I drank a lot,” he jokes. What do you think of that decision since it was pushed back to the end of last season? I really wanted it to happen because I think the audience probably wanted it to happen. I think they’re part of the reason why the first season worked, because there was a genuine connection there. You could see between these two people that they were lost for very different reasons. One is in this toxic relationship. You can say she’s just the embodiment of goodness, but she’s trapped in this horrible situation. And then there’s Elliot, who is lost because he literally and figuratively has no idea where he is or who he is. And then she is precisely this ray of hope. Obviously, there’s a connection between Helen and Elliot, between me and Danny, that attracted people. So I think there were people who thought that if there were more, it would be a good place to start. JANUARY 2022 JAMIE FOR “CRONICA” (MEXICO) To what extent did growing up there help you get involved in the story Belfast tells? For starters, I didn’t have to work on another accent... but for me it’s also important to be able to tell stories about where I was born and help a wide audience understand what happened. I was born thirteen years after the events narrated in the film, but the armed conflict lasted 30 years, that is, I was born in the midst of the conflict and I understand it well. I think it’s important to be able to see it from different points of view and in this case it’s that of a 9 year old child and a normal family. The film focuses on how difficult it is, in a situation like this, to make the decision whether to stay or leave. In my character’s case, he was already working in England when the riots broke out and this makes it easier for him to leave than other families. He knows that if he leaves he will have a job and a way to support his family, but that doesn’t take away the difficulty and harshness of the decision to leave your people and everything you know behind. (…) What was the most important thing Kenneth Branagh told you to put yourself in your father’s shoes? There was almost everything in the script, Ken didn’t want to do something too documentary or an accurate portrait of who his father was, he wanted to separate himself a little from the story of him and invited us to contribute what our instinct he told us. I understand that you were also inspired by your father, who recently passed away. What aspects of yourself did you bring to the character? I think when I first read the script, the fact that I didn’t know the story - something like that, that had such a massive ripple effect on an entire nation - I found it a little crazy that I didn’t know it. That. The heroism involved, the sacrifice involved… they felt – especially Jan – like someone you could identify with. Kids who fought for something they truly believed in, but who were normal kids. What do you like about the part? You always need a push in everything you do and a reason to tell the story. As an actor, you have to have something that drives you every day on set. There may be a stronger push needed than the opportunity to murder someone so horrible. There’s no one in the world now who can’t see that Heydrich was evil... So to have that, to practice that every day, I’m so excited about the idea of having that as motivation... How will you prepare for the role? People have different ways and means of researching characters and getting into the mindset of whoever they will be playing. Sometimes you do things that feel right to embody a character, sometimes you push the boundaries. The way I prepared to play someone like Spector in The Fall: It takes you to dark places. You discover a lot of things about yourself that maybe you don’t always want to discover and it’s a pretty interesting process. For this particular project, I don’t think I need to go to such places. I think there are things about Jan that will make sense to me in a more personal way rather than having to dig too deeply. Where did you start researching your character and what did you discover along the way? I have discovered that the journalists who show war zones and who go to these places to tell us the truth are among the bravest people in the world. Especially with Marie and her and Paul’s approach to many of their tasks. They go to places where other journalists flee. Very often they are the last people present on these sites, but they have been forced to denounce and tell the real truths of these places. That courage, that tenacity and that audacity are incredible attributes. I was very lucky that Paul Conroy was with us throughout the entire shoot. He became a very good friend of mine. I was texting him earlier, so I’ll see you later. I learned a lot from him as a human being. I also learned some practical things. I love photography. I have many cameras, but they are all old. Paul, finding himself in these war zones, used a digital camera. We had a story together where he guided me. Also, when I photograph something, I don’t photograph things that move very fast or happen very quickly. I just ask that people stay still. It’s simply still life. That aspect of photography was fun to learn. You spend some time learning it. It was work I was very proud to be involved in. Do you find yourself picking up your camera and looking at images differently now that you’ve spent so much time with Paul Conroy? Perhaps. I have a lot of respect for how those images of war zones are obtained. I also saw some things he photographed that newspapers didn’t consider printable. Which are some of the most horrendous things he’s ever seen in my life. If people aren’t meant to see them, you can only imagine what they look like. It was at the audition for the movie “ Rock Of Ages ”, which was that musical with Tom Cruise , Russell Brand and so on, it all happened about eight years ago. I had to sing a song that had a higher pitch than I can reach when I sing. The audition took place at ten in the morning at the Warner studios in Los Angeles, where there is a huge parking lot. I literally got up and brushed my teeth and went to the audition, and at 9:55 I was in the parking lot. I had bought myself a small bottle of Jameson to gain confidence and warm up my voice. The problem was that I hadn’t had breakfast and I still had the taste of toothpaste in my mouth. I was already sitting there and I said to myself: “Let’s go”, I drank the whiskey and immediately started vomiting. I opened the car door and couldn’t stop vomiting as people walked through the parking lot. I went into the audition with a taste of vomit and whiskey in my mouth, and obviously it went badly. I told them “I feel very bad, I can’t do it”, but they insisted that it wasn’t that bad, that they saw something good and that I could fit in very well with the cast, but it was impossible that little room smelled so bad. My character, Pat Quinlan, was the battalion chief and his average age was 18. They were little boys when they left Ireland, so it's a fascinating story. I can't believe that, being Irish, I didn't know her. You don't have a very strong accent anymore, I don't know what it would have been like when you were younger. You're from Belfast, aren't you? Americans still have problems with your accent. -Yes, I had to work on this aspect for “The Siege of Jadotville” because my character has a Kerry accent, from the south of Ireland, and it's quite strong, so he had to be softened a bit for this reason . Having a specific goal, like a certain role, won’t work, I’m afraid. I think it is more convenient and satisfying to make the most of the possibilities that exist within you. Go at your own pace instead of focusing on something that might not work. That doesn’t mean there are many brilliant directors I would love to work with, like Paul Thomas Anderson, Kathryn Bigelow, Damien Chazelle... What’s the fun in acting? JD: With every role you enter new territory. You have to challenge yourself, push your limits to perform that role to the best of your ability. The upcoming films couldn’t have been more different. They are completely different genres, I play completely different characters and I speak with different accents. This challenge is wonderful, even if you are constantly trying to get the most out of your role. This brings with it a certain tension that can be very heavy. And what’s also difficult is that sometimes you have a great script, a good director and great colleagues, but the end result is different than what you thought or expected. That’s why I try to have as much fun as possible during the process. I just completed Wild Mountain Thyme. It was one of the most satisfying experiences of my life. The script was fantastic, the director and my colleagues brilliant. And we also shot it in Ireland, where I’m from. DORNAN: I would 100% prove it. If it had all the detrimental effects like in the movie, maybe I wouldn’t do it today, but at 20 I definitely still would. If we knew it could easily take me back in time, I think we all would. I like the idea of hanging out in Laurel Canyon in the late 60’s with Joni Mitchell, James Morrison and David Crosby. Looks like those kids were having a blast. I like that American folk-rock sound, so that’s where I’d like to go. There are many lessons in this film. Have they influenced any of you in any way? DORNAN: Yeah. There’s a great talk the guys have at the end about living in the present and appreciating the things you have around you that really resonated with me. Especially now in 2020, it was a time for reflection on staying in the present but also looking back to the past wondering what we could have changed. There has also been a lot of time to think about the future and how we want it to play out, even if so much of it seems to be out of our control.
