Sad to learn that Mary Law, one of only a few of the remaining credited cast of 'Carry On Constable' (1960), has passed away. She was 91. And I lovingly hate how Dame Christie always has me second guessing myself!!!!! I may think I'm improving my observation skills in these mysteries, but then I fall yet again for another red herring. But I will say that I am getting better! Also, gotta note that I love Lucy Eyelesbarrow as a main character, and I wish I could see more of her! She (and Craddock, but Lucy's the star!) was kind of like Marple's sleuthing protégé. She's very skilled, clever, and independent. She's my new favorite Christie protagonist!

Powiedzieć, że biografie nigdy nie były moją mocną stroną to jak nie powiedzieć nic. Być może to mój pech sprawiał, że podobnie jak w przypadku nauki historii, zawsze serwowano mi najbardziej suchą i zwiędłą wersję z możliwych. Jakby w myśl zasady, że historia musi być zimna i sztywna jak ci, których dotyczy… Dlatego za pokusą zmierzenia się z biografią Agathy Christie krył się również strach. Zwłaszcza że nie jestem fanem jej twórczości. Mało tego. Nie przeczytałem ani jednej jej książki! Tak, tak. Wiem. Ignorant. Mógłbym teraz prawić o tym, jak to Agatha Christie stanowi część mojego życia (bo stanowi – w życiu mojej rodziny była od zawsze), ale to nie odda powodów, dla których zdecydowałem się spróbować przeczytać biografię napisaną przez Lucy Worsley (tłum. Alina Siewior-Kuś). Sprawił to… opis wydawniczy tej biografii. Opis, w którym czytamy m.in. „Dlaczego Agatha Christie spędziła życie, udając, że jest „tylko” zwykłą gospodynią domową, podczas gdy najwyraźniej nią nie była? Pływała na Hawajach, kochała szybkie samochody i zaintrygowała ją nowa nauka, jaką była psychologia, która pomogła jej w walce z wyniszczającą chorobą psychiczną. Dlaczego zatem – mimo wszystkich dowodów wskazujących na coś przeciwnego – Agatha przedstawiała się jako edwardiańska dama przechodząca na emeryturę?”. Warto było dać się przekonać opisowi, ponieważ biografię napisaną przez Worsley czyta się jak przednią powieść. Powieść z nielichym wątkiem kryminalnym (w 1926 r. Christie zaginęła bez śladu!), powieść barwną, powieść oddającą pasję autorki, która opisywała żywot Christie. Ale przede wszystkim: żywą, dynamiczną, wciągającą. I bardzo mocno zachęcającą do lektury książek Agathy. CIĄG DALSZY W KOMENTARZU *** Współpraca z wyd. Świat Książki, ale wierzcie mi – żadne pieniądze nie skłoniłyby mnie do przeczytania nudnej biografii. In Mollendaal gebeurt zelden iets, tot bibliothecaresse Judith wekelijks pakjes begint te ontvangen. Telkens opnieuw krijgt een van de boeken van Agatha Christie, waarna enkele dagen later een vreemde gebeurtenis volgt. Zo wordt er een hond vergiftigd en krijgt een vrouw een stroomstoot van haar eigen wagen. In het begin legt Judith geen link met de boeken die ze ontvangt, maar als er een eerste moord gebeurt, begint haar te dagen dat er meer aan de hand is. Samen met de dames van haar leesclub starten ze een onderzoek en proberen ze de aanwijzingen die in de boeken verborgen zitten te volgen. Dominique Biebau wist me enkele jaren geleden te charmeren met zijn knappe thriller “Het mollenfeest”. Ik was dus erg enthousiast om zijn nieuwe misdaadroman te lezen. De locatie is opnieuw het kleine Mollendaal en ook Isabelle is terug van weggeweest. Voor zijn vaste lezers is het dus even thuiskomen, terwijl nieuwe lezers ook zonder deze info zonder problemen mee zijn met dit nieuwe verhaal. Afwisselend laat hij de verschillende personages aan het woord, waardoor het verhaal vanuit diverse standpunten vorm krijgt. Het verhaal is knap opgebouwd, leest bijzonder vlot en vooral de mooie, rijke taal is opmerkelijk. Korte hoofdstukken houden het leestempo hoog en zorgen ervoor dat het boek moeilijk weg te leggen is, want een volgend hoofdstuk heb je zo weer uit. Het plot zit goed in elkaar en het is een echt genoegen om met de dames van de leesclub te mogen meespeuren naar de dader. Ook deze keer wist de auteur me echt te bekoren met een verhaal dat eenvoudig lijkt, maar dat op alle vlakken vernuftig in elkaar steekt. Een auteur die ik graag verder blijf volgen! And Then There Were None My first Agatha Christie! I was perfectly in the mood for this page turner, I raced through it because I needed to know Whodunnit - and I had no idea 🙈 The premise (which seems to have been nicked for that Glass Onion film) is that eight people are invited to an island on false pretences, them and the two housekeepers are the only people there; the hosts never arrive. Terrible accusations against each of them play on a gramophone, and the ten begin dropping like flies in a manner eerily foreshadowed by a children's poem hung in each bedroom. There is no way to escape the island until each of them has been killed... but if nobody else is on the island, who of them is the killer? My only real criticism is that it could have been more fun if it slowly unravelled rather than all being revealed in an epilogue, but it was well executed, the right amount of eerie and kept me guessing so I'll definitely read more of her crime fiction in future. Lubicie klimat „starych” kryminałów? Ja uwielbiam! Zapraszam Was do poznania kolejnego wspaniałego kryminału autorstwa Agathy Chrisie. Panna Marple, której coraz mocniej dają się we znaki ograniczenia związane z coraz starszym wiekiem, zajmuje się kolejną sprawą. Ta zagadka jest bardzo nietypowa. Niezawodna Jane dostaje list od swojego przyjaciela po jego śmierci. Poznali się w niegdysiejszych Indiach Zachodnich. List tak naprawdę nie zawierał żadnych konkretnych informacji ani wskazówek. Sama Panna Marple nie wiedziała nawet czym ma się zająć. Miała rozwiązać sprawę, a nawet nie wiedziała czego lub kogo szuka! Jedyne na czym mogła się opierać to hasło „Nemezis”. Czyżby tym razem nie udało się rozwiązać zagadki tej niepowtarzalnej kobiecie? Polecam przekonać się o tym na własnej skórze! Ze względu na tajemniczość całej sprawy z dużym zaciekawieniem czytałam kolejne strony. Czekało mnie wiele emocji, zaskoczeń i głowienia się. Fabuła jak zwykle w przypadku wybitnej Agathy Chrisie nie pozostawia miejsca na „przyczepienie się”. Nie czytałam wcześniej tak poprowadzonego kryminału i muszę przyznać, że się zakochałam w tej historii. Zakończenie było dla mnie zupełnym zaskoczeniem i nagle wszystko stało się jasne! Na dodatek to, co towarzyszy każdej książce autorki to niepowtarzalny klimat i styl, które sprawiają, że nie sposób odciągnąć się od lektury. Serdecznie polecam każdemu! 30th April 2024 🖤 Crooked House - Agatha Christie 🖤 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 out of 5 stars April: Poison This is one of those books that I wish I could read for the first time again. As soon as I saw that April’s theme was death by poison, I knew I was going to be reading this one again! I think is one of Christie’s best novels, and I believe it was one of her favourites too. I find the members of the family quite intriguing, each with their very odd behaviour, but all quite strong characters in their own way, headed up by 2 very imposing figures. One dead and one alive. I really loved Charles Hayward, our detective for this outing, I found him really sweet. The whole book has a real feel of the net closing in on our killer, but not around the person I thought it was! Willkommen in den 30er Jahren der #readchristie2024 Challenge „The Tuesday Club Murders“ aus dem Jahr 1932 ist eine Sammlung von 13 Kurzgeschichten, in denen Miss Jane Marple ihren ersten Auftritt hat. Die Geschichten wurden ab 1927 in Zeitschriften veröffentlicht und spielen zeitlich vor „Mord im Pfarrhaus“, das 1930 herausgegeben wurde. Auch wenn es sich um eine Sammlung von Kurzgeschichten handelt, so werden diese durch die Schaffung des Dienstagabend-Clubs miteinander verbunden. Der Club trifft sich, um mysteriöse Begebenheiten und geheimnisvolle Mordfälle zu besprechen und zu lösen – und schon bald stellt sich heraus, dass insbesondere Miss Marple dafür ein gutes Händchen hat. Basierend auf ihrer Lebenserfahrung und dem dörflichen Miteinander zieht sie Rückschlüsse auf die Natur des Menschen und löst so souverän die Rätsel der Clubmitglieder. Gerade Miss Marples Wandel von der altmodischen Dame zur scharfsinnigen Detektivin wird in dieser Sammlung von Kurzgeschichten gut erzählt und ist wunderbar nachzuvollziehen. Dem Dienstagabend-Club gehören illustre Teilnehmende wie der ehemalige Scotland Yard-Kommissar Sir Henry Clithering, Miss Marples Neffe, der Schriftsteller Raymond West, sowie Dolly und Colonel Arthur Bantry, Nachbarn und Freunde an. Für die ersten sechs Geschichten finden die Treffen bei Miss Marple statt, ein Jahr später begegnet man sich bei den Bantrys, um sechs weitere Rätsel zu lösen. Die 13. Geschichte ergibt sich, als Sir Henry Clithering einige Tage zu Besuch auf Gossington Hall bei Dolly und Colonel Arthur Bantry ist. Une soirée en huis clos avec huit hôtes triés sur le volet donc quatre pour leur excellence à savoir résoudre des énigmes et quatre autres qui seraient de potentiels criminels qui ne se sont jamais fait prendre. Voilà une riche idée organisée par M. Shaitana. Malheureusement, il y avait une faille dans son plan de soirée. Pour mettre en exergue toutes ces cellules grises, il fallait un meurtre ... ... J'avais fait en sorte de me faire une sélection cette année de romans Agatha Christie que je ne connaissais pas. Après lecture, je me suis rendue compte que je l'avais déjà lu mais il y a fort longtemps et cela ne m'a pas empêché d'apprécier cette relecture. Encore un très bon moment passé auprès de ce cher Hercule mais si la prochaine fois il n'est pas question de bridge cela ne sera pas grave 😅. En effet, hormis cette petite ignorance sur cette façon de jouer aux cartes (en même temps, peut-on tout savoir dans la vie?) et le comportement parfois casse bonbon de Miss Oliver où à priori juste avec une intuition on peut tout élucider et ceux sans preuve, ce roman est toujours aussi bon avec l'ensemble de ses protagonistes. an april roundup for you all! 🌸 my finished book pile is looking a little sparse due to needing to work on my finals, but hopefully that will change when I hand everything in next week! 🎉 I enjoyed both Villette and The Screwtape Letters, both of which I will review for you soon, and I’m really enjoying my current reads too! 🎀 I finally got round to watching The Rings of Power series and I loved it, but it isn’t really the same vibe or calibre as LoTR, so that’s worth bearing in mind if you give it a watch. Jediným hostem je tu pan Quin, se kterým začnou probírat zdejší případ. Mladá žena, která v kraji nějakou dobu bydlí, se provdala za kapitána Harwella, o němž nikdo nic neví. Po návratu z líbánek manžel beze stopy zmizí. Podezřelý je muž, který se kapitánovi staral o koně. A zamilovaná je do něj dcera hostinského. Čtenáři, kteří mají povídky s panem Quinem rádi, tuší, že pan Satterthwaite se pokusí o zmizení zjistit pravdu, a tak očistit mužovo jméno, aby pomohl milencům… 📌 Nástin děje některými prvky připomíná jiné povídky Agathy Christie: Kvůli poruše auta se náhodně dostává do hostince a k případu i Hercule Poirot v povídce Laň z Arkádie z Herkulovských úkolů.
