Well, interesting results on the @sutherlandwelles finish test. I tested the Murdoch’s, Botanical, pure tung oil, Varnish, and the polymerized tung oil. Unfortunately, all of them showed damage to the sheen from the water, wine, and ketchup. What’s really interesting is none of the wood stained at all. Even the red wine left no discoloration. By complete fluke, one of the finish samples had a little blot where a drop of finish accidentally landed and dried. It was unaffected by the wine (second pic). So, a few things this tells me: 1) the finish did a good job protecting the wood, especially sealing it. While it showed water marks and damage to the sheen, the wood itself was fine. 2) the accidental blob tells me that with enough coats, you could get a thickness that would be very durable. For me, it’s just a matter of how many coats you need. I had 2 sealer coats and three finish coats. As I mentioned in the last post, with a 24hr recoat time, it’s a pretty lengthy finishing process. So, brass tacks: I’d recommend all of the @sutherlandwelles finishes without question in low traffic applications. Dressers, night stands, tV stands. The finish is really easy to apply and has nice depth, so I think it would work really well for chairs. I hesitate to recommend it for something like a table top or kitchen counters. I just think you’d need to put a lot of layers on to get the necessary level of protection. Caveat: I don’t test how well finishes can be repaired. I suspect @sutherlandwelles can be easily repaired, since the wood itself never stained or received any damage. For anyone following @danieldunlap.woodworks who may be looking for a new “zero VOC” or “low VOC” finish, I posted the link in my bio to my wood finish testing I’ve done. Comprehensive results there, but here’s the long and short of it: @waterlox TruTone is your best bet for a zero VOC, beautiful finish that’s as durable as any finish you’ll find @vermontnaturalcoatings makes a great, milk protein based water poly, I think has very low VOC I love @osmo_usa but it does have petroleum distillates if that bothers you @walrusoil cabin walls and floors finish was shockingly good for something you can literally eat (I’m not sure I’d actually eat it though). @waterlox and @walrusoil are both family owned, US based businesses. We have mostly been hiding out in the shop lately. Working on projects but also taking some time to play with some finishes. We have previously only done this finish with wire brush on solid but have discovered we can do a light brush on veneer too. 2 of the samples have our regular polyurethane finish and 2 have an oil finish using Rubio. Continuing on with finish experiments. Because I have been mostly working on paper, the world of varnish is not one I’ve explored much aside from having a few containers of craft-grade matte finish around. I am very into the idea of a cold wax finish right now although I admit to being pretty impressed with how everything looks under a glossy isolation coat, too. 🧐 In this pic the orange has a layer of wax and the mushroom just has the iso coat. Got some Odie's Oil to try out. I'm going to finish this piece of sapele with it then test it for a few different things: 1. Scratch resistance. 2. Liquid water resistance. 3. Vapor exchange rate (stabilization) 4. Cleaning solution resistance (resistance to wear/damage from common household cleaners). I'll be finishing both sides of this chunk with Odie's, and will do another piece with regular old polyurethane, and compare their results. One thing I can say about Odie's already is that it smells really good. Kind of a lemony beeswax aroma. And a little does go a long way, as many have said. I'm curious about the results of this test! I'm hoping Odie's has good results, because it would be nice to have another good simple finish to use, especially for those "all-natural" customers. I'm not entirely optimistic about scratch and vapor exchange resistance, but we'll see!

I wanted to include these options because they’re popular finishes in the category and provide an interesting contrast to the oil and wax finishes. All three did exceptionally well on all but the Mr Clean. . . The left hand samples I would give a failing grade to, and here you’ll find the usual suspects you expect to find like the mineral oils and waxes meant for kitchen use, but surprisingly, both Rubio samples wound up here. One sample is both part A and B and the other is just part A. The other sample that didn’t do well was the Naturhaus Hard Oil. . . . And the winners column on the right also has some big surprises. So this will be my last post about the finish testing I did, these are my top three favourites.... . . Tied for second and third place are Osmo Top Oil and Saicos Hardwax Oil. They both allow the natural beauty of the wood to shine through and have a very nice sheen. They both did very well in terms of stain resistance. The customer service I received from Osmo has also been very friendly and helpful. . . My favourite finish was definitely Odies Oil, hands down, no contest. For me personally @odiesoil distinguished itself as the clear winner for many reasons, but here are a few. It’s a good quality finish in terms of appearance, sheen and stain resistance it outperformed all others. The wood below it can be sanded as smooth as you like, so if you want to sand your latest guitar project to 1000 grit, go for it, the oil will bond with no issues and look fantastic. In fact I would say the more care you take at the sanding stage really matters with this finish, there’s no hiding substandard workmanship under a coarse sanding job with this stuff. Lastly, and for me most importantly, this finish is totally safe. You don’t need to wear gloves, you don’t need a mask, and you don’t have to worry that you’re poisoning yourself, it actually makes your skin feel nice! The fact that this finish is made of natural ingredients and performs better than all others is quite remarkable. The reason I posted a picture of our kitchen counter is that we’ve been living in our house for five months now, and the counter is holding up to regular use with no issues. Odie’s customer service and advice has also been top notch. . . . Lastly, I just want to express how disappointing my experience has been with Rubio Monocoat. My tests, which I believe stand on their own merit as I consulted with numerous experts about my application method, showed poor resistance to stains. After disagreeing with my results the company has done their best to discredit me through social media as evidenced by dozens of screen shots I’ve been sent of defamatory statements and application recommendations that contradict their complaint about my testing. Very unprofessional. . . . Have a great weekend!
UPDATE: After @rubiomonocoatusa asked me to make a public apology for not following their recommendations, I’ve received dozens of messages containing some pretty upsetting information. Not only has the company consistently told people to apply a second coat, but they’ve been attempting to sully my reputation throughout social media. I find it very upsetting that such a big company would engage itself in a campaign of misinformation and bullying, and I won’t be reviewing their product any further due to this behaviour. . . . So I need to issue an apology to @rubiomonocoatusa . Apparently the application of a second coat of finish renders the finish itself completely ineffective. I did apply two coats thinking that as a furniture maker just one coat didn’t seem like enough, and I was doing my best to give them the best possible results, but yes, I applied too much apparently. I first applied one coat, let it soak in for 15 minutes and then buffed it off. 24 hours later I did the same thing again after the product felt completely dry to the touch. . Rubio also states clearly that I can’t sand past 120, which effectively renders this a floor only finish that shouldn’t be applied to furniture in my opinion, and if a second coat can’t be applied at all, then repairs would be very difficult to make without completely removing all the finish first. . . I got the impression that they feel as though I’m sabotaging the results, and that’s the very last thing I want anyone to believe, so I have two more unsanded samples that I will finish today and allow to cure for another 21 days, at which time I will re-test the samples and provide you with the results. Sorry for the mistake everyone. . And just so we’re clear, this is the only penetrating finish I’ve ever heard of that won’t bond to itself. I’ve put a very thin coat of Odies oil on this corner shelf, and this highlights one of the other parts of the test I did of oil and wax finishes. I know that flooring finishers have a certain sanding protocol that they use for wood floors, and it doesn’t go past 150 grit, and in some cases doesn’t go past 120 or 100. That’s entirely understandable when you’re talking about a floor, but if you’re building furniture it’s not enough. I sand to a minimum of 320 grit, because I don’t want my customers to see any scratches on the furniture they’re paying me to make. . . If a finish manufacturer discouraged me from sanding my work to what I consider to be a minimum standard, then I wonder if that finish is actually penetrating the wood or just sitting on the surface. From the perspective of a furniture maker, I appreciate that the manufacturer of Odies Oil encourages their customers to sand all the way up to 1000 grit if that’s what they want, and the quality of the surface with the finish on it is truly very nice. . . Under the right circumstances and with the right equipment, you can buff up almost any of these finishes, but being able to achieve these results with a cotton cloth and no experience speaks for itself. My samples are now curing indoors and all the finishes have been applied according to each manufacturers specific recommendations. In some cases I’ve applied additional coats just because it has enhanced the finished sample and protected the wood a little more. I still can’t do my water/coffee/wine or cleaner tests because I’m going to let everything dry for another ten days, but at this point there are some clear observations that can be made around colour and sheen. I would say the oil that darkened the wood most and accentuated the figure in the grain most is actually a bit of a surprise. Although I don’t expect much in terms of resistance to stains or long term performance, the Naturoil from Terra Nova and Beeswax finish really looks great. I’ve used this finish on many cutting boards, spoons and other food related projects, and while it requires frequent maintenance, if you don’t mind putting in the work, it’s foodsafe, smells nice, and as I’ve said, really made the wood pop. All of the little sample pieces are finished and curing, and I’ve already learned a lot about the different finishes I’ve tried. I’m not sure how I’m going to capture the full scope of my observations in an Instagram post. I might have to make a post for each finish separately. I started tonight prepping all the samples for the big finish test, and the first thing I found interesting was how little difference there is in colour from one finish to the next. I’ve sanded all my samples to 120 on one side, and 320 on the other to test if there’s a difference in the performance, most manufacturers recommend a coarser surface, but most furniture makers I know like a super smooth surface. The water spot from a day ago had completely dried on the surface and all I did was wipe the dust off that collected in the water spot with a dry cloth. No other oils or anything have been applied here. The result is a pretty impressive. There’s no discoloration and maybe a slight texture change but nothing I believe that would be detected unless you were had prior awareness that the spot was there. The finish used on this sample is @rubiomonocoatusa exterior grey hybrid wood protector. Next I’ll do a water test using the oil plus 2c. This pool of water has been sitting on this sample board finished with @rubiomonocoatusa hybrid wood protector grey for close to 2 hours. No signs of absorption or discoloration. Zacznę od minusów 😔 maseczka ma za zadanie oczyszczać z sebum martwego naskórka oraz zanieczyszczeń niestety tego nie robi ale za to doskonałe wysusza twarz... Drugi minus jak dla mnie to zapach jest tak duszący jakby słodko- korzenny że mdli i długo nie można się do niego przyzwyczaić wrezultacie po ciężkim dniu kiedy chcemy położyć się z maseczka na twarzy w wannie i się zrelaksować cały czar pryska... Gdy zasycha na twarzy tworzy jakby skorupkę która ściąga Ci skórę być może jest to efekt spowodowany rzekomym oczyszczaniem... Plus - twarz jest po niej gładka ale nie miękka i promienna tak ja obiecuję nam producent oczywiście co tej gładkości też bym patrzyła na to z przymrużeniem oka gdyż stosowałam ja dwa razy w tygodniu a wielokrotnie przed nałożeniem stosowałam peeling... Po tylu dniach stosowania nadal jest jej większą połowa a nie żałowałam grubości maseczki na twarzy i mimo 100 ml jest bardzo wydajna Podkreśle rodzaj swojej skóry na twarzy : MIESZANA ze skłonności do trądziku i przesuszenia...
