Sunday 24-03-24 Fitzroy River Campground Sunday night's campsite โบ Sunday morning we left Warrnambool, Skylar was happy to be back in the car again off to our next camp. We stopped in Port Fairy, but couldn't do much exploring due to Skylar sleeping again! Not far out of Port Fairy we noticed we lost one of our Caravan windows ๐คฆ๐ผโโ๏ธ I obviously didn't clip it in properly when we left Warrnambool earlier that morning, oops ๐ซฃ #RookieMistake So we turned around and drove back to Port Fairy so Tim could do a temporary fix until we can get a new window ๐คฆ๐ผโโ๏ธ So we finally pulled up at Fitzroy River Campground later that afternoon and set up camp. Much later than planned, and just our luck the weather had turned to shit. It was extremely windy. This is an awesome campground, only $10 per night Or $50 for the week. (No powered sites here) It does have long drop toilets but no showers, fire pits available to hire and wood available to purchase. And it has an accessible boat ramp into the Fitzroy River just up the road. We would have loved to stay here longer than the one night, however it was very windy so we decided to keep moving on. Broome โ Kununurra ๐บ๏ธ๐ฃ๏ธ We got going early, checked out the boab tree along the way. We got to see green grass! Itโs been along time but wow the red rocks up against the green grass is so nice to see. The mighty Fitzroy river was flowing with all the decent rain up here, the new bridge was a site to see just after the town of Fitzroy Crossing. Then through Halls Creek and up to Kununurra, there was a cheeky bull on the side of the road. We left at 6am from Broome and pulled into Kununurra at 7pm 1042km done, kids watched movies and ate the lunchbox out a few times but did so well! The Fitzroy River Bridge has been officially re-opened less than a year after it was destroyed in the devastating floods of December 2022 โ January 2023. ๐ The bridge, which is the main route for travel and freight between the East and West Kimberley region, has now been re-built six times stronger. It contains twice the amount of steel and concrete piles that have been driven twice as deep into the riverbed, leaving the region more resilient to future disasters. With joint funding from the Australian Government and the Western Australian Government through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, the bridge was re-built at lightning speed, with completion occurring nearly six months ahead of schedule.
