Wow yesterday was a dream come true. We went to Litchfield national park and went to the upper cascades. A stunning area filled with natural beauty. Now the lower cascades are closed due to crocodiles, but the upper cascades are still open. There's lots of little pools and water falls that people are swimming in. Just before we took a dip, I thought it's best to scan the area, as just because it's open doesn't mean it's safe. Low and behold a beautiful big freshie sitting right under that tree. Freshies mainly feed on small animals including insects, fish, frogs, lizards and crustaceans and aren't usually much threat to humans. Usually they will only attack in self defence. However it still highlights the fact that you must be croc wise in croc country, because if that was a saltie it would be a different ball game. With the Dry season just around the corner, our crocodile management teams are working hard to make sure swimming holes are clear of crocs. 🐊 This big fella was caught in the Leliyn (Edith Falls) plunge pool that is remains in seasonal closure. Our wildlife rangers removed this 4.05 metre salty from the Nitmuluk National Park on Wednesday 😬 In Darwin Habour, a 3.6 metre croc was one of many removed this week. Kakadu National Park ! 😁🤩🤠🌴🇦🇺 Il s'agit d'un des lieux si ce n'est LE lieu où la culture aborigène est la plus développée dans le pays, où on peut vraiment en apprendre beaucoup et découvrir cette culture. C'est d'ailleurs pour moi LE National Park où aller pour voir des crocodiles avec plus de 10 000 à l'état sauvage. Il y a énormément de bushfire à cause de la chaleur. Les journées et les nuits sont très chaudes et très humides (climat tropical, mais heureusement ce n'était pas la saison des pluies). La température pouvait aller à 35°C encore à minuit (ressenti plus avec l'humidité). Petite rencontre avec un dingo, à faire attention surtout s'ils sont en meute. Awesome talk by Australian palaeontologist Adam Yates last night at the Darwin museum about a newly discovered “cleaver headed” crocodile species that once roamed central Australia in the late Miocene period, between 23 and 5 million years ago . Its name is Baru Iylwempeny (Crocodylia Mekosuchinae) they had massive thick heads on them and huge amounts of muscle due to the size of their prey at the time, they died out because of the global cooling and the drying up of their habitats . These photos are an actual fossil dug up here in the Northern Territory . Rangers today removed a male 2.26m saltwater crocodile from the Rapid Creek trap. ㅤ There have been numerous sightings of crocs in the area recently, and hopefully this is the saltie that everyone has been seeing. ㅤ This is a timely reminder for everyone to #BeCrocwise at all times. They can move around more when rivers are flooded and with recent reports of a dog being attacked yesterday afternoon make sure you and your furry mate stay away from the water’s edge and #DontLetYourFurryMateBeBait. ㅤ If you see a crocodile you need to report it to the Parks and Wildlife Crocodile Management Team. ㅤ To report a crocodile in the Darwin region phone 0419 822 859, or in the Katherine region phone 0407 958 405.
I have been pushed aside by crocodile conservation groups because I don’t fit the narrow minded narrative, I have been shit talked by tour operators who engage in way more dangerous behaviours than I would ever do, I am a realist and I am boots on the ground, I say it how it is and I don’t care for tunnel vision, the Irwin family (Steve Irwin’s family ) do nothing for crocodiles in Australia , you may not like to hear it but it’s true. I put a shit load into crocodile advocacy and education as well as my photography. My aim is to work in as many crocodile related jobs and industries , some I will not like some I will love some I’ll be surprised by, but I’m doing this because I want to see everything croc related from every aspect so that I can justifiably comment and have input on all areas related to crocs in Australia. I support crocodile farming done ethically, i support appropriate crocodile management for animals found too close to city waterways where people frequent , I support conservation through commerce as long as it’s monitored and controlled , not everyone will agree with me and that’s fine, they don’t have to, it’s all for the betterment of the species Australia wide , from state to state the issues vary as much as the crocodile populations, it’s all about balance. This year’s wet and wild weather has led to crocodiles moving into some unfamiliar places, including this 1.5m female freshie seen patrolling some of Darwin’s beaches recently. ㅤ It is unusual to see freshies in a saltwater environment as they prefer freshwater creeks and billabongs, although they have been known to inhabit brackish water in tidal influences. ㅤ Thankfully, our crocodile management team has been able to relocate this healthy freshie into a more natural environment away from the coast. ㅤ Several crocs have also been sighted in the Daly River community and with more rain forecast over coming days, people are reminded to #BeCrocwise. ㅤ Many Top End creeks, billabongs and road culverts that were empty during the dry season are now overflowing, creating a water highway for crocodiles and many other animals to move around. ㅤ This means motorists are also urged to be extra careful on flooded roads with crocs and other wildlife potentially creating extra obstacles to drive around. ㅤ #BeCrocwise #WetSeason #Dontletyourmatebebait ㅤ Photo credit: Jocelyn Ellero

🐊 Crocs to remain in Rollingstone Creek 🌿 Wildlife Queensland applauds @leannelinardmp and @qldenvironment (DESI) for their decision not to relocate three crocodiles from Rollingstone Creek, north of Townsville. A DESI media release issued on 6 March stated that the crocodiles were observed during a land-based survey of the creek on 5 March 2024, well downstream from a swimming hole where an estimated three-metre crocodile was spotted at the weekend. Senior Wildlife Officer Tony Frisby said, "None of the crocodiles we observed exhibited any concerning or dangerous behaviour, and they will not be targeted for removal." 🌿 Residents and visitors in the greater Townsville area are reminded to #BeCrocwise and to report crocodile sightings promptly. We know what crocodiles are capable of but they don’t always attack. We have very clear boundaries to keep us safe from crocodiles which is basically ‘don’t swim in crocodile habitat’. Crocodiles are not surprising us with their behaviour, it’s people who push these boundaries and act surprised. Crocodiles are more present and undetected in freshwater wetlands than people will ever realise. They are freshwater animals who are capable of tolerating saltwater to move around the coastline. They are very active in the warmer months and will move into new areas and into isolated waterholes are far as they physically can reach. They can detect waterbodies from a distance and will move several kilometres during the night to reach a new location. Despite this behaviour, crocodile incidents with people are rare considering the risk pushed by people regularly in Far North Queensland. Pleased to read DES comments about the crocodiles not displaying “problem crocodile behaviour.” Now it’s time to educate the community that the presence of crocodiles in Rollingstone Creek is no myth. #saltwatercrocodile #becrocwise #crocqld #rollingstonecreek #townsvillecrocodile #fnq

You may have seen the “is this a crocodile or a rock” photos and videos posted from Rollingstone Creek (just up from Rollingstone Bridge). It has now been confirmed as a 3m Estuarine crocodile. These people are incredibly lucky. They were swimming and paddling over the top of this crocodile on inflatable flotation devices taking underwater photos. This is an important reminder that anywhere in crocodile country may contain crocodiles. The DES media release rightfully states: “The belief some people have that they are safe in Croc Country if they swim in the freshwater section of our rivers and creeks is misguided. “Crocodiles are highly mobile, and they travel upstream in our rivers and creeks to source freshwater and feed on animals that come down to the banks to drink. “You never know what is lurking in waterways, and people really need to make sensible choices when they’re near the water in Croc Country.” Please be crocwise.
