I think shipping containers are great building materials if they are the only material around which you can build a shelter from, or maybe if you live near that crashed container ship in Baltimore. . While I understand the appeal of shipping container homes, the reality is that shipping containers are too small for comfortable habitation. They are maybe almost 8 feet in interior height and width. If you don’t want to live in a hot box, you’ll have to properly insulate the interior with a few inches of insulation, which means you’ll lose even more precious space. I’m thinking about maybe making custom large-sized shipping containers so you can then modify them, or perhaps use the cut-out skin as cladding on an existing building. However, that completely contradicts the original idea of reuse. Intense storms (excessive rain, hail, and winds) hit several cities, causing landslides, bridges and roads falling, rivers and lakes flooding, and city isolation. Also, dozens of deaths, thousands of displacements, and shortages of electricity, drinking water, food, and fuel. It is estimated that almost 390 municipalities out of a total of 497 were affected in some way. Some cities were almost completely devastated. We need your attention and support during this critical time. The state of Rio Grande do Sul, located in southern Brazil, is currently facing one of the most catastrophic natural disasters in its history. To put things into perspective, Rio Grande do Sul is about 281,000km², approximately the same size as the state of Nevada in the United States, slightly smaller than Italy, and a bit larger than the UK. Imagine 80% of this vast area submerged under water. That's the grim reality facing us right now. 397 out of 497 municipalities have been impacted, with some cities witnessing over 90% of their territory underwater. This flood is the worst our state has ever seen, surpassing even the historical flood of 1941, leaving a trail of destruction and despair in its wake. We were not prepared for something this big, and the population is struggling. Hundreds of thousands of people have lost their homes, their livelihoods, and everything they hold dear. The official death toll stands at over 90, but this number is tragically underestimated. We will only know the real number once the water levels start to decrease. Shockingly, over 100 individuals are still missing, their fate uncertain amidst the chaos. Our communities are in urgent need of assistance. This is only the beginning, we still have people stranded that need to be rescued by boat or helicopter before we even think about starting to rebuild. Please spread awareness!

Created in March 2024 with @maisonpicturale Resinotype on Fabriano artistico paper, made with pine resin and pine ashes collected in Paradise, California, after the Camp Fire. Quoting the artist’s website, “Megafires spurred by climate change no longer spare any region of the globe. On November 8, 2018, the megafire Camp Fire ravaged Paradise, California, killing 86 people in 4 hours. In 2021, the Dixie Fire started under the same power lines that crisscross the hills around Paradise. I met those who decided to rebuild their “paradise” in a place that now seems brutally inhospitable. To account for the intensity of emotion heard in my conversations with survivors, I use an infrared slide film, whose blazing colors break into the tenuous normality of their new life, flashbacks of the flames seared on their retinae as they rebuild in the shadow of the next disaster. But there is a lot more that we can do: Avoiding physical destruction of coral and coral reefs, improving waste water management to avoid coastal water pollution, supporting organizations and institutions who work on the field of coral research, coral conservation and restoration, to name some examples. Durant cette résidence, Yann Marussich a travaillé sur la faisabilité d’une lévitation du corps. Il a travaillé avec des aimants. Et même si théoriquement c’est possible, la réalisation serait très coûteuse et sans garantie des conséquences sur le corps. La recherche fût néanmoins passionnante.
