It’s errand day in town…prescription pick up, bananas, new mascara, and maybe a blouse for my trip to CA next week for granddaughter Logan’s college graduation. Fashion expectations aren’t high for grammas. We just have to show up. I like that. I make a quick stop at TJ Maxx, put a few tops in my basket, joggers, lime green capris that catch my eye… It's a pretty easy try-on session. One top left. It’s a beautiful blue with cute sleeves and a tie at the hips. It goes on easily enough, but getting it back up over my head, with no stretch in the fabric, is a chore. It catches firm on my elbow. You’ve been there, right? I feel something sharp. When I finally get it off, I see that the stiff tag has scraped a section from my forearm, ruffling the thin skin like a pink shrimp. I’m mad at myself for trying it on just because it was here, mad that I’ll be making my trip now with this old-lady arm! By the time I get to the counter it’s bleeding. I ask if they have a Band-Aid. The checker calls to the girl at the end of the counter. She brings a small Band-Aid. “You could wash it in the restroom.” I absolutely will not be doing that. She offers a box of Kleenex. I take two, pressing them on my arm. The checker continues scanning my items, asking if I want to “sign up for TJ Maxx Rewards.” The girl with the Kleenexes picks up the phone asking about a First Aid Kit. Minutes later a woman comes with everything needed…gently blotting the area with antiseptic pads, gauze, then applying antibiotic ointment and finally, a bandage. The girl waiting for my payment says to her, “You’re really good at this stuff!” to which she replies simply, “I used to work at the hospital.” She gives me instructions for care upon returning home and for the following day, an extra bandage and antibiotic packet. In those moments of discomfort and irritation—with myself…and the checkout girl asking again if I want to sign up for rewards as I’m struggling to insert my card with my free hand—her touch changes everything. A simple, profound kindness. I’m thinking that her calling might not be management at TJ Maxx…but on the other hand, maybe today, it was. #kindness #flatheadlake #cabinonthelake

Flathead Lake Brewing Company began, as breweries so often do, without the intention of becoming the full-time career for the Johnston Family. In 2004, Sandy Johnston, and her then-husband Terry, bought a nano brewery from their friend Lisa, who owns the Raven in Woods Bay. “We kind of just bought a concept at the time,” Sandy said. “We didn’t really know what we wanted to do with it. We thought it was going to just a fun little hobby that would maybe be a little bit of income on the side.” Twenty years later, FLBC is one of the oldest breweries still operating in the state — over that period just in the Flathead Valley four breweries have opened and closed. “We’re kind of the old guard in Montana brewing now and that’s a really special place to be in,” Sandy said. “You see the new kids on the block and feel kind of like an older sibling, getting to watch them grow and develop, but having fun knowing we were an original.” Despite 20 years of changes and turmoil, if you walk into the Bigfork brewpub you’ll still find the same small town “cheers” atmosphere it’s always been known for, award-winning brews on tap and never-ending plans to keep doing more. #bigforkmt #flatheadlake #flatheadmt

Who’s ready for another good ol’ fashioned Montana Snow Day?? Anyone? …anyone? Well, earlier this week, that’s precisely what FLBS director Jim Elser and a team of researchers were actively seeking to find as they embarked on their first snow algae sampling trip of the year. Snow algae, or chlamydomonas nivalis, is a red-pigmented green algae found in high alpine and polar regions around the globe. The algae’s striking appearance on snow has earned it nicknames ranging from watermelon snow to glacier blood, and scientists believe it could play a major role in melting glaciers and snowfields. Sparkling fresh white snow is the most naturally reflective surface on Earth. When algal blooms take hold, they darken the snow, which then absorbs more heat and melts more quickly. This can create a feedback loop: As temperatures rise and more snow melts, the snow algae — which needs nutrients, light and liquid water — flourishes and expands. The algal bloom alters its own habitat, and appears to alter the surrounding habitat in the process. Just over half of the total runoff in the West comes from snowmelt, but the extent to which snow algae contributes to melting isn’t currently included in standard snowmelt models. Elser and his team are hoping their work can help scientists better understand the role snow algae plays as the climate changes.
