#barbarianmotorworks #uglypieceofshit #downfallofhumanity #bmw #xm #frankstephenson Designer Frank Stephenson penned the R53 Mini Cooper, among numerous other models for Ferrari, Maserati, Fiat, and Lancia, plus five separate McLaren supercars. Frank the ex BMW designer was responsible for the original BMW X5 design. So if anyone is qualified to give their verdict on BMW’s current design language, it’s Frank Stephenson. Stephenson’s take on the XM can easily be described as harsh, but the designer isn’t criticizing the concept simply for the sake of criticism, and he says that it’s a bit naive to simply write it off as bad or foolish design. Take, for example, the myriad of body lines worn by the XM, which seem to start and terminate with no clear direction, or the garish look of the XM’s proportions, including its large, illuminated kidney grilles and exaggerated wheel arches. These items aren’t particularly divisive or controversial in their own right, but when they’re all found together on a vehicle as large and ostentatious as the XM, they become nothing short of objectionable to some. These elements may not be particularly apparent to the average consumer of the XM’s looks, but it only takes a brief explanation to highlight them to the point where they simply can’t be overlooked. The rear end is nearly as “painful,” as Stephenson says. His main criticism here starts with the two BMW logos on the rear window which are a throwback to the original BMW M1. In his eyes, though, they just don’t belong there, and “it’s just like signing your name twice - why would you do that?” The exhaust pipes? Stephenson takes a deep breath...

BMW X5 (E53) was unveiled 25 years ago(!) and it’s definitely aged well. I’ve always had an interest in the original X5 design. They kind of looked like an E39 Touring on steroids : smart design cues like the kidney grille, Hofmeister kink, and simple but muscular body lines make it instantly recognizable as a true BMW. Story 📚: January 1999, Detroit Motor Show. The SUV trend was in its early phase, the Range Rover P38 and Mercedes M-Class dominating the landscape. To understand the X5 you need to put it into historical perspective. When it was being developed -E53 project began in 1994- BMW owned Rover Group and Land Rover. To compete directly with its own Discovery and Range was ridiculous so the X5 was conceived as a fast road-going and unibody 4x4. This Sports Activity Vehicle as the brand likes to call it, wasn’t just another SUV: BMW proved that luxury and great driving dynamics could coexist in a tall, rugged package. This one isn’t a top-of-the range V8 “is” model: base spec 3.0d with the M57 inline-6 (184 hp and 410 Nm of torque) + rare manual gearbox. Possibly one owner from new + @passion_plaques. Love this very 90s spec: Grey Green metallic + orange blinkers + small wheels (star-spoke styling 57) + grey leather and walnut wood trim. @Ferrari F430 | Full Maintenance Something just clicks when you see that signature Ferrari Red, we get it, its fast. Honestly, for their time they were hellishly fun and fast, and still can outrun many modern exotics. The car has a 4.3 liter naturally aspirated V8, still in use in modified and direct-injected form in the current 458 Italia. I think Top Gear called it the best car in the world, ever, and would ever be, a divine presence, a distillation of all of man’s achievements into a single machine, or something like that. The F430 is a bit overshadowed in Ferrari's history. The 360 was a massive change from the 355 in both styling and construction; the 458 that came after it is a bonafide modern classic and had the last atmo V8.
