Built in the spring of 1876, the 2,000 ft long Camp Clarke Bridge across the North Platte River offered an improved connection between the Sidney-Deadwood Trail and Union Pacific Railroad, Hundreds of freight wagons, stagecoaches, and riders paid the tolls of $2 to $6 to use the short route. A hamlet known as Camp Clarke, with a hotel, store, saloon, and post office, sprang up at the south end of the bridge. Although travel on the trail declined after 1880, the bridge continued in local use until about 1900. The highest bridge in the world. Soon to be overtaken by the completion of the Huajiang grand canyon bridge in 2025. China are in their own lane when it comes to mega bridges and it seems they’re just getting started. The towers themselves stand at an incredible 269m but the clearance below the deck is 565m due to the deep river gorge. Looking down from the edge of a tower I could see locals beginning their normal days work and I wonder if they are even phased by the extremity of the bridge anymore. I wonder if they even look up anymore or if they’ve ever thought about… climbing it.
