An update: Our little serval was given a multitude of meds and nutrients and spoon fed Hills AD diet: itโ€™s a dietetic pet food for dogs and cats for nutritional restoration, convalescence and feline hepatic lipidosis. This food has high energy density, a high concentration of essential nutrients and highly digestible ingredients. Credit: Hills The first couple of tries he just licked a little, albeit very listlessly. By the end of the second morning he was attacking the spoon to get it down as fast as he could! His little baby teeth are like needles, definitely not a place you would like your fingers to be! More updates on this little one to follow soon. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’š We rely on the generous support of donors and sponsors to rescue, rehabilitate and release our precious indigenous wildlife. If you would like to help us with our vet bills, food or anything at all, every Rand matters!! https://www.friendsoffreewildlife.co.za/dono.../donor-levels Friends of Free Wildlife Nedbank Nicolway Acct: 1135622957 Ref: Serval #serval #hills #rescue #friendsoffreewildlife #freewildlife #hanginthere

We recently received a call from Elzet, a previous intern at FFW. Her husband works near to the Rietvlei Reserve in Pretoria. The office ladies had noticed a young serval a few days earlier and mentioned it to Xavier on Monday, he took a large box and some heavy duty gloves to check out the animal. What he found was an extremely weak, young serval kitten, no female was seen around and no idea of how long the baby had been alone. Margi took the call from Elzet and organised for Xavier to meet her at Bryanston Avian, Exotic and Small Animal Clinic (BAESAC); Dr Perushan took the case and everyone worked together to save the serval. There was virtually no muscle to use for injections and Dr Perushan decided to lightly anaesthetise the animal to get a better look and also ordered X-rays. The X-rays were horrendous, just skin and bone, as emaciated as any animal Margi had seen, a drip was started, all meds were given and he was put into a warm incubator. We all knew that it was touch and go for the next 24 hours... #serval #nowwewait #rescue #freewildlife #friendsoffreewildlife #bryanstonavianexoticsmallanimalclinic #teamwork

Happy Bat Appreciation Day! Bats are one of the most misunderstood mammals out there. Lots of misconceptions and myths around where they roost, what they eat, diseases they supposedly carry and all sorts of doom and gloom stories. These myths and unfounded beliefs are typically passed down from one generation to another, and it is important that organisations and individuals that are passionate about these flying superheroes engage with the public, educate and raise awareness on how critical they actually are to the worlds ecology and food security, in turn breaking the circle of misbeliefs and turning it into appreciation and love for the bats. Truth: They are intelligent, highly social flying mammals with wonderful individual personalities. They have strong bonds to their family, and while known to squabble (which family doesnโ€™t ๐Ÿ˜) they are gentle creatures with no interest in harming humans but skilfully feeding on insects, fruit and nectar. Through their feeding habits they pollinate many different plants, disperse seeds from many important trees and plants which in turn has a direct impact on food security and biodiversity. At Free Wildlife, we rehabilitate many different bat species every year. Most common are Cape Serotines, Rusty Pipistrelleโ€™s and Yellow-bellied House Bats with some Free Tail Bats and Fruit Bats. While some bat species have adapted very well to urban living the pressure of ever-increasing development and with it, the destruction of habitat is one of the threats. Living in our roofs and having to hunt at night while our cats and dogs are on the prowl is another major one โ€“ over 80% of bat admissions at our rehab centre are due to injuries from cats & dogs. We absolutely love bats and will continue to rescue, rehabilitate and release these wonderful creatures. Letโ€™s stand together for the future conservation of our bats and our world as we know it. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿฆ‡๐ŸŒ #batappreciationday #lovebats๐Ÿฆ‡ #batconservation #friendsoffreewildlife #freewildlife #wildlife

We call her Grogu. Baby bushbabies (also known as Galogos or Nagapies), among the smallest primates, are born tiny but remarkably mobile. They cling to their mother's fur within hours of birth. Nursed on mother's milk initially, they quickly transition to insects, fruits, and tree gums. Nocturnal and communicative, they grow rapidly, adapting swiftly to their arboreal lifestyle. They have strong hind limbs for leaping and grasping hands and feet with specialized pads for gripping branches. They tpically live in small family groups consisting of a breeding pair and their offspring. Babies often play together, helping them develop important social skills. #grogu #friendsoffreewildlife #freewildlife #bushbaby #youngster #urbanwildlife #galogos #nagapie #sweetestthing #wildlife #wildlifeonyourdoorstep

This is the story of a hadeda back in April 2019. (Throwback Thursday). Everyone knows the hadeda and most people have strong opinions on them! But love them or not, they are protected because they are an indigenous species. "We had a very disturbing case this week when a couple from Midrand, who feed the local hadedas, heard โ€œtheirโ€ birds calling from the next door garden. They looked over the fence and saw two hadedas attached to a wire fence in the neighbouring garden. The gentleman decided to climb over and try and untangle them. He found that the birds, an adult and a youngster, were wired onto the fence (see photos). He called out to the gardener who told him that โ€œthe birds were disturbing his vegetable patch so he had caught them and tied them up to keep them awayโ€.The case has been reported to the local authority. The couple brought the birds to FFW to ensure there was no permanent damage or fractures. We treated the abrasions and decided the birds would be better released back in their home garden, and as the last picture shows, they were happily reunited with the other member of the family -- calling as usual!!! A good ending to a very nasty story." We recently had this little African Bullfrog (Pyxicephalus adspersus) as our patient, brought in after the heavy storm as a suspected cat catch. African Bullfrogs are the largest in southern Africa (6th largest in the world), with males weighing up to 2kg! Did you know that South Africa is home to more than 80 species of amphibians, many of which are found nowhere else in the world? Amphibians are amazing animals that can live both on land and in water, and have a fascinating life cycle that starts as aquatic larvae and ends as air-breathing adults. Amphibians play a vital role in the ecosystem - they help control pests, pollinate plants, and provide food for other animals. Please help us in protecting these fascinating creatures! Part 2 of the painted hadeda: The painted hadeda was brought to Karin for extensive treatment. It entailed a daily cleaning whereby quite a lot of feathers had to be cut away. Enamel paint on feathers has always been a tricky one. After some research about how to best remove paint from a bird, Ilana, a volunteer at Free Wildlife got in contact with Arthur Potts from a company called Earthwize Environmental Products. She had read that two other rehab centers had success using a product called โ€œTargoneโ€ for the treatment of paint and even glue. As luck would have it, Arthur was flying up to Johannesburg the next day and said he would bring some of his product for us. What a champ! After a few days, the transformation was quite incredible, the paint came off and fortunately "Attitude Arty" as Karin came to call him, was almost entirely a new bird! Since then, he was brought back to the center and is enjoying his large flight cage with a few friends. Soon this lucky fella will be released, paint-free! A big thank you to Arthur from Earthwize for your care, product, and follow-up messages checking up on our beloved painted hadeda. We are very grateful for your help! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿชถ And of course, a very big thank you to Karin as well for her patience and perseverance. We rely solely on the generous support of sponsors and donors. Two tree squirrels (Paraxerus cepapi) arrived recently from NSPCA as confiscated 'pets'. The rehabilitation process is underway to "wild' them up and we are monitoring them closely. Note that it is illegal in South Africa to keep indigenous animals as pets, including tortoises, squirrels, meerkats, chameleons, etc. Sadly, we have seen many cases where wild animals kept as pets are stressed or sick, been fed the wrong diet, housed in inappropriate/small enclosures and donโ€™t get to exhibit natural behaviours like socialising. Instead of keeping tree squirrels or other wildlife as pets, it's better to appreciate them in their natural habitat and support conservation efforts that aim to protect and preserve their populations. If you encounter injured or orphaned wildlife, it's recommended to contact your local wildlife rehabilitation centres or authorities who can provide appropriate care and rehabilitation. #wildiswild #keepthemwild #squirrels #rescue #rehabilitate #release #friendsoffreewildlife #wildlife #notpets

This beautiful Southern red-billed hornbill fledgling was found on the side of the road in Zeerust on the 1st of September. Brendan from Owl Rescue Centre was in the area and had him courier it to us. He was assessed by Helen and Bethwell and no serious injuries were found, just some minor swelling. He will stay in our clinic and continue to be monitored before being moved to an outside cage. Thanks Brendan for your help! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿซถ #friendsoffreewildlife #rescue #rehabilรญtate #release #southernredbilledhornbill #hornbill #OwlRescueCentre #collaboration

Part 1: This adult lesser bushbaby (Galago moholi) was brought to Free Wildlife on the 8th May with a badly fractured left leg, the thigh bone or femur can clearly be seen in the first X-ray. The little chap was then seen at BAESAC @99_baesac (Bryanston Avian, Exotic and Small Animal Clinic) by Dr Jean Davidson who, after looking at the x-rays, decided she would give the bushbaby a chance and put a pin in the fractured leg. The second picture shows after the operation and the third and fourth the beautifully stitched leg. Interesting facts: Bush babies can leap over 30 feet of ground in just seconds! Bush babies are nocturnal and spend most of their time high up in a canopy of trees. They're omnivores that eat fruit, insects, tree gum, and sometimes small animals. Bush babies have a lifespan of over 16 years in the wild. #bushbaby #lesserbushbaby #rescue #rehabilitate #release #BAESAC #friendsoffreewildlife #freewildlife #makingadifference #secondchance #surgery

Our tiny tot Cape Robin chats just over a week later and still having us at their "beak and call"! It's so lovely to watch them growing up. Already we have one that is quite the explorer! The others, well, they're just happy and content to be in their warm fleecy nest calling or singing away! Become a FFW custodian and help us to help our patients like these little delights from as little as R50 per month. Every little bit helps us to feed, house, medicate and release our beautiful patients. ๐Ÿ’š Click on the link below: https://www.friendsoffreewildlife.co.za/membership-account/membership-levels/ #caperobinchat #tinytots #rescue #rehabilitate # #release #friendsoffreewildlife #theexplorer #thesopranos #thetenor #happysunday #birds #birdsofinstagram #birdsofinstagram

๐ŸŒฟAttention nature lovers! ๐Ÿพ Did you know that cage enrichment plays a crucial role in wildlife rehabilitation?๐Ÿฆ‰๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿฆ‡ ๐Ÿ”We at FFW are dedicated to providing a safe haven for injured, orphaned, or sick animals, but simply providing a cage is not enough. That's where cage enrichment steps in! ๐ŸพCage enrichment refers to the process of enhancing an animal's living environment by simulating natural elements and providing mentally stimulating activities. This helps the animals to lead more fulfilling lives while in captivity and prepares them for their eventual release back into the wild. Here's why it's so important: ๐ŸŒณMimicking the wild: By recreating elements of the animals' natural habitat within their enclosures, such as plants, branches or rocks, we help them regain a sense of familiarity and adjust faster once released. ๐ŸŽฏMental stimulation: Wildlife in rehabilitation often suffer from stress, boredom, or confusion. Enrichment activities like puzzle feeders, foraging challenges, and sensory toys engage their minds, promoting problem-solving skills and keeping them physically active. ๐Ÿ‘ฅSocial interaction: Many wild animals are social creatures and rely on interactions with their own species. Providing appropriate opportunities for socialization within the confines of the cage can help them maintain their natural behaviours and social skills. ๐ŸŒˆEmotional well-being: Just like humans, animals experience emotions. Enrichment enhances their emotional well-being by reducing stress levels and preventing the development of harmful behaviours due to boredom or frustration. #WildlifeRehabilitation #CageEnrichment #Conservation #AnimalWelfare #FriendsofFreeWildlife
