This sycamore tree was here when the colony of #pennsylvania was “Penn’s Woods”! It sits on land that was part of a 1718 Penn grant, deeded by Penn to the early settlers. How cool is that?! This tree was standing here before the Consititional Convention conceived the Declaration of Independnce!! Not many people know about this tree and that it’s right here in the heart of Lancaster County. I consider it one of our favorite hidden secrets. Each time we visit it, we notice something different or ponder something else about its history or even the science of it and how it was struck by lightning in the 1950s. This is classical education at its core for me. We are learning and living life together. Discussing ideas, asking questions and revisiting topics over and over again, each time digging deeper and gaining more knowledge and understanding. If you would like to check the tree out, it’s a good quick five minute stop and it’s right near @thatpetplace just off of Route 30. Can you guess where we were today? The free pass for the @the_lancaster_science_factory that we requested through the library a few months ago became available! When we arrived we were shocked to see this new exhibit. How cool?! We arrived at 1:30pm as some school groups were just leaving and it seemed to be the perfect timing as a lot of rooms and areas were set up and exciting. As we continue through the building we found they also had an outdoor area that we hadn’t seen before. This kid! I love him.❤️ He celebrated #youthsavingsweek by depositing some hard-earned money into his @everencefinancial account and was so pleased to earn an extra $5 doing so. If you are looking to save some money by growing your own food, don’t feel like you have to have a lot of space to do it! #backyardgardening Today I picked my first rhubarb (I probably should have harvested it sooner, is so big!) My rhubarb is planted in a small bed next to my back door along with some meadow tea and catnip or lemon balm usually. I utilize the space along my house for kale, asparagus, herbs and this year potatoes and peppers for something new. My favorite backyard gardening tip is to plant potatoes in containers. It makes them so easy and fun to harvest. Just plant them in a few inches of soil then add more soil after they are several inches tall and keep repeating every few weeks until you reach the top of the container. This way more and more potatoes will grow. At the end of the season, then the pot over (we throw them in the garden) and pick out your potatoes!!
