Looking for a unique early flowering perennial for late spring flowering, check out the Colorado desert blue star (Amsonia jonesii). This widely adaptable western native thrives in ordinary gardens or unwatered xeriscape. The flowers are an abundant array of clusters of 5 petaled delicate light blue flowers in late spring to early summer. The overall plant size is 12-16 inches tall and wide. The foliage emerges from the ground looking like asparagus spears and then rapidly gains height with densely leaved dark green foliage on the stems. The leaves are maintained throughout the summer, making an attractive bushy plant. In the fall, the foliage turns an attractive clear yellow. Blue star likes full sun, any kind of soil, and requires moderate to xeric water conditions. It is a zone 4 plant and is also deer resistant and does well up to 6200 feet in elevation. My garden pyramid a great guide to help you create a magazine-worthy landscape that’s lush and beautiful. But designing a beautiful garden does take planning and a shift in your mindset to go from buying "all the plants" to choosing "the right plants" that serve a clear purpose. This becomes more and more important as you have less and less time for maintenance and upkeep! I wont say that this is an easy process or a magic bullet, because it's not. But, if you are interested in expressing yourself and DIYing a unique space, my course is a great foundation. Check out the course at https://bit.ly/3HI7Xp2 🌱Follow @prettypurpledoor for more gardening tips 🌱

Hardening off seedlings is a process used to get your plants ready for life in the garden! Start small- warm temps (60+), a calm & cloudy day, and only set them out for an hour. Each day you can increase the length of time and exposure to sun. Morning sun is best because it is the least harsh! And don’t forget- peppers are picky! Mine are patiently waiting inside for the temps to warm a bit before they join the tomatoes. #backyardgardener #indoorseedstarting #tomatoplants #pepperplants #growlights #raisedbedgardens #lakecountrywisconsin

2022 Garden ————-> 2024 Garden 💛 New home = new space for the garden. Here’s a little sneak peak of the new garden beds 👀 In 2022, I was a full-time student halfway through my Cardiac Sonography internship, going to clinical full time and working every weekend + day off I had. But nothing made me happier than getting my hands in the soil and tending to nature. That’s when I decided I wanted to start a garden. Without permission, I built a raised bed in my parents yard ( Sorry not sorry mom 😆) and starting to do what I really LOVED and what made me happy 🫶🏻 Starting my garden was an escape for me, an escape to get away from the books, stress, and a place where I could find peace. In mid 2023, I moved into my first home and couldn’t wait to make my dream garden come alive at our new home ❤️ I can not wait to share and grow with you during my gardening journey 🙌🏻 #gardening #garden #gardeninspiration #gardenlove #gardenclubofamerica #gardener #gardenersworld #backyardgardener #gardenersofinstagram #growyourown #grow #growth #vegetables #vegetablegarden

A community garden is a shared space where neighborhood residents come together to grow and harvest fresh produce and flowers. 👩🏾‍🌾 It fosters a sense of community pride and brings people from all backgrounds together around the shared joy of gardening. 💚 With these 3 important things in mind, you'll be well on your way to launching your own: 👇🏾 1️⃣ Find interested volunteers 🌱 Start by talking to your neighbors to gain support and gather a list of people willing to help plan and maintain the garden. 2️⃣ Secure a location 🌱 Work with your local municipality to obtain permission to use a vacant public lot. 3️⃣ Fund the project 🌱 Create a budget for seeds, irrigation supplies, and tools and determine fundraising plans like sponsorship or membership fees. By following these tips, you can turn any empty lot into a shared green space of nourishment and joy. 🥕 #urbangardening #growyourownfood #gardener #communitygarden #backyardgardener #urbangardener #happygardener #gardeningtips #communitygardening #urbangardeningideas #gardeninglifestyle #gardenerlife

WHAT IS INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT (IPM)? In the world of gardening, sooner or later pests will find your plants. But a thoughtful, proactive approach will help prevent these pests from doing serious damage in your garden. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) will introduce you to a methodical approach from selecting resistant varieties, to hands-on pest removal, to using traditional pesticides. As shown in the IPM, the process is to attempt to resolve the pest issues first using Cultural Practices. As you move up the pyramid mechanical techniques are tried. The next step up is the utilization of Biocontrols until you reach the final step of using Pesticides to resolve the problem. CULTURAL PRACTICES: This step includes choosing plants suited to your area and that are also disease and pest resistant. When planting trees and shrubs, select material that is not susceptible to iron chlorosis. Also check the root system to ensure that there are no girdling roots or other root issues. Avoid overhead watering to minimize fungal diseases. MECHANICAL CONTROL: This step consists of removing the insects and pests by hand. This step consists of using mulch around the base, hoeing, using netting over berry bushes, and removing pest bugs by hand. Leave the good bugs there. BIOLOGICAL AGENTS: Introduce predator insects such as lady bugs to eliminate aphids. Also green lacewing larvae feed on a lot of pests such as mealy bugs, whiteflies, mites, and thrips. Introduce parasitic insects that lay eggs on the target pests and feed on the undesirable pest. PESTICIDES: This is the step where the other IPM steps have not been effective. You then resort to traditional or synthetic pesticides to eliminate the pests. Botanical-based pesticides fall into this IPM program. The goal of IPM is to minimize, not eliminate using pesticides and offers alternatives to the environment. Y’all I couldn’t wait another second!! Tomato planting: 1. Dig a nice hole 2. Boop the lowest leaves off and put that ‘mater in there deep 3. But first! Hole in one and a cuppa coffee. Add an egg and some coffee grounds. Mash that lil egg up first. 4. Depot and plop her in 5. Cover and build a tiny hillside for the tomato to sit on or it’ll drown to death 6. Water in or do it on a rainy day Step two for thrifty witchy gardeners: 1. Gather your boops (the leafy stems you plucked) 2. Fill something with water. Tap is fine. Babied tomatoes are weak and stupid. 3. Stick the bottom of them in the water (pop all but top 3-5 leaves off) 4. If you get leaves wet you lose 5. Reap your free extra baby tomato plants in 1-2 weeks. Transplant into pots or the garden once you see creepy lil roots shooting off the bottom. Any showing of weakness - compost that sucker!
