It’s a rainy & cold spring day here in Wisconsin. We enjoyed what will probably be one of our last soups of the season! Soup is SUCH a staple in our home. I often make soup from left overs. It’s my favorite way to make a meal stretch & if I’m being honest - the warmth of soup brings me back to my childhood. My mom made soup A LOT when I was just a little girl. It was a cheap way to feed us kids nourishing meals on a tight budget. Ironically, I now do the same! 🙈 This delicious hearty soup was from a ham that I made a week ago. I managed to get NINE meals from making just ONE ham! Most of those meals were making my kids copy-cat Starbucks egg bites, but still - NINE MEALS! It was so simple. I simmered the ham bone until it made the most savory broth. I took the bone out leaving only the scraps of meat behind. I added roasted garlic, sautéed onions, and a diverse variety of dried herbs and spices. After two hours of simmering to let the flavors form, I finished it up by adding barley, roasted carrots, and crispy roasted potatoes. Providing nourishing and delicious meals to your family does NOT have to break the bank. We did an experiment testing black pigment. We used dot of permanent marker and a dot of super-black paint on separate pieces of filter paper. We placed the strips of paper into isopropyl alcohol and watched what happened after 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes and 2 hours. The marker faded while the super-black paint held strong! It's such a JOY! 🌟 when your child chooses Jesus as their personal Saviour! Today our oldest daughter chose to profess her faith in Jesus publicly through being baptised. This was all on her own doing. God has been moving in her heart and life over the past few years. She has come to love God deeply for what he has done for her through Jesus Christ, and she believes he gave her a second chance at life when she almost died two years ago. Over the past two years, we have witnessed her boldness to share Jesus with her friends and in praying for their salvation. One of her friends and mom have come to know Jesus as their personal Saviour because God used her. She is passionate to see the others come to this saving grace in time. And so today, she chose to profess her decision to follow Jesus Christ all the days of her life. As I listened to her share her testimony of God's salvation of her life, I cried tears of joy. As a young mother, my greatest desire was that each of my children would come to love & serve God for themselves. And it is beautiful to see her doing just that. Mamas, I can tell you that all the years of teaching your children about Jesus, training them, lifting them up in continuous and deep prayer, and living an authentic real relationship with Jesus is SOOOO WORTH IT! We took a walk...ok we took about 3 nature walks this past week through trails, beaten tracks and old forests to soak up the beauty of Spring! Why didn’t anyone tell me you all had actually rebuilt #blackwallstreet in Greenwood! ? I purposely went out of the way to visit Tulsa to see the cultural center and museum (the latter was closed that week😫). But I didn’t know all this was here! The girls learning about The Tulsa Massacre was bittersweet. They learned that there were thriving black towns, but also what was done to them. On the plus side, Aphiwe said being in Tulsa felt like being at Howard University 😝. The people in Tulsa were nice and the prices for gas, food, and services were better than anywhere so far. I’d definitely move here! I wish more people knew about the over fifty thriving black towns in Oklahoma in post civil war America, because people really do think black people cant do anything and haven’t done anything. There’s a lot to learn from the past that would make our future so much better. Consider putting Oklahoma on your next homeschool trip! Very excited to start the new term this morning. Our schedule is worked around the last seven years of figuring out what works for us and a couple of outside-the-home activities we have this term. • Our intentional learning is made up of independent work in the morning (math and reading), then in the afternoon we have Together Time (read alouds) and our Gather ‘Round unit for the day. We are continuing the Antarctica unit, and restarting Middle Ages from early last year that we stopped because of the big move. • All up, it’s about 2.5 hours, and the rest of the day is free for the children to enjoy and pursue their own interests. 🔥 Day 121. Read 1 Chronicles 10-12 After Saul was killed in battle with the Philistines, the people of Israel remembered that the prophet, Samuel, had anointed David king. They gathered together and spoke to David: “Behold, we are your bone and flesh. In times past, even when Saul was king, you were the one who led out and brought in Israel; and the LORD your God said to you, ‘You shall shepherd my people Israel, and you shall be prince over My people Israel.’” (1 Chronicles 11:1-2) They recognized that David was to rule over them by God’s choice. Mighty men from throughout the kingdom came to support David. It is recorded that “David became greater and greater for the LORD of hosts was with him.” (1 Chronicles 11:9) The favor of God was on David’s life because his heart was devoted to God. He enjoyed not only the favor of God, but the favor of the people also. “For day by day men came to David to help him, until there was a great army like the army of God.” Devotion to the LORD is a precious commodity in the sight of God. They better put some respect on our kids names! Act like ya know! #homeschoolpride This is a “concern” that friends and family would bring up often when I told them I was homeschooling my children, before the pandemic. I’m really not sure where people get this idea from that school is the only place, or even the best place to socialize a child. In short, our children are not only fine but thrive when it comes to interacting nicely with others. Now some hard truth: As a teacher, many of the schools I’ve taught in or visited are the last place I would want my child to be socialized. That even includes so called good schools in a blue rated school districts where Socialization looks like: - Girls being teased for plump or skinny bodies, developing body image and confidence issues - Sexual harassment and touching as early as kindergarten - Dehumanization and degradation of children by adults - Physical restraint and choking by adults - Dark skinned boys being treated unfairly and undervalued by adults and children So when people complain that my children won’t be socialized, it takes a lot for me not to roll my eyes. But I understand, this is the only type of socialization we in America, where all children have access to go to school, understand. You have to know who your child is and what your family values. I remember reading some years ago about a woman who had a gentle kind sweet boy. After sending him to kindergarten he became a totally different person, mean and defensive. My first year of high school, my advisor wrote that I seemed defensive and had a bad attitude towards learning. My mom and I were shocked, because that’s not who I was as an elementary school student, not who I was as a person. But, I had spent two previous years in a horrible public school where the children were out of control, and I learned to be nasty and not care to survive. Another hair math session! How did we get here? The child needs to notice that when adding doubles in order, the answer increases by 2. 1 1 = 2 2 2 = 4 3 3 = 6 4 4 = 8 (See the pattern, 2, 4, 6, 8 …..) So given any double equation, they should be able to figure out the double problem before and after that. For example, if I tell you the first answers, can you get the blanks without using a calculator? 30 30 = 60 31 31 = 62 32 32 = ?? Now try this: 1,546 1,546 = 3,092 1,547 1,547 = ???? The child would need to be able to count very well before this. Here’s some things I did and didn’t do: ❌Told her 2 2 = 4 ✅ Asked her “How can I figure out what 2 2 = ? ❌Taught her to count to 100 by repeatedly counting to 100 ✅ Taught her that our number sequence is predictable. If you can count from 0 to 20, then you can figure out how to count from 20 to infinity. ❌ ask her to figure out math with just paper and pencil ✅ used lots of manipulatives, all the time, especially ones from the real world ❌give lots of workbook problems ✅ Encouraged her to observe patterns in nature (wow, those geese are standing in pairs! How can we figure out how many geese are there?) I use aopsbeastacademy but would recommend starting with any green rated program because AOPS kind of kind advanced math. rtn 😊🌻. Everyday Physics - Coffee aroma and quantum physics. One molecule in coffee that contributes to its aroma is 2-ethyl-3,5-dimethylpyrazine. The way we differentiate between aromas is not completely understood. Inside the nose there are so-called oderant receptors that are linked to neurons (nerve cells). There are two competing theories that aim to explain how we smell. The first, shape theory, contends that the shape of molecules play a role in how oderant receptors function. The other theory, vibration theory, contends that it is the vibration of molecules in the receptors that allow for the distinction between odours. There are over one hundred type of oderant receptor neurons. This means we can distinguish between a very large number of aromas, something like a 1000 billion ! The shape and vibrational character of molecules are determined by quantum physics. In particular the idea from this that electrons around atomic nuclei have probabilities of being found at a particular region around the positively charged atomic nuclei, plays an important role in determining the shape of molecules. Not gonna lie, this last month has been a challenge. With the passing of my father-in-law the needs of my family have felt a bit heavier. Life doesn't pause though, we still got sick, did school, traveled, had company, served, and worked. I would like to say I handled it all with complete grace and unselfish love, that I kept my eyes on Jesus and everything was great., but that's not the case. Some days were really hard. I felt like a failure. I wanted to just quit everything. On those days of overwhelm I cried out to God, "Why, so much? Am I really called to all of this?" There were a few things that helped. First, the reminder that Jesus holds all things in his hands and the future doesn't rely on me. Second, I have an amazing husband and community that spoke truth when all I could hear were lies. Finally, I have a vision and mission statement that help me prioritize and reminds me why I do what I do. It also allows me to say "no" to things that I can't take on right now. Have you ever felt like life was so overwhelming that you couldn’t focus? Have you wanted or needed to learn something new but slowing down to take it all in felt impossible. Have you ever felt like if you slowed down and rested, the world might implode? Have you wanted to take care of yourself better but feel like there is just too much to get done and if you don’t do it, no one will? Have you ever thought, I am barely getting by, I am just surviving. Me too. I was just sitting, doing a little learning this afternoon and I was filled with so much joy and gratitude for my ability to focus, the Lord continues to do amazing healing in my life. I have gone from addicted and distracted to having a peace that surpasses all understanding and a true love of learning. If you feel like you don’t have time to learn or when you sit down to take in some new content, you feel overwhelmed by everything that needs to be done, I want you to know, you are not alone, I have been there and we were never created to live in survival mode. It is really hard to learn new things when we are just surviving. It’s really hard to experience growth and achieve new goals, when we are barely getting by. If you are in that place of survival, it’s not your fault that you are there and there is hope for you. Accepting the love of Jesus is at the foundation of all the growth I am able to experience each day, without His grace I would be weighed down by shame unable to move forward at all. Getting healthier in my body, then helped me learn to live loved, build confidence and believe I was a person of value and now I am able to grow. It’s all a journey and I am grateful for every step. One of my absolute favorite places to find fun, creative math games and activities is @mathgeekmama Loads of great resources in her online store, including many for free! We’re coming back from a two-week break (trying out a six weeks on, two weeks off year-round schedule), and I wanted something fun to ease us into it. I think these chocolate-themed math activities will be just the thing! (While I didn’t get Hershey brand chocolate, these Aldi chocolate bars will still work for the fraction section since there are twelve pieces per bar.)
