May is mental health awareness month. The U.S. National Human Trafficking Hotline Report lists mental health concerns as one of the top five risk factors for human trafficking. Traffickers seek to exploit and manipulate individuals with vulnerabilities such as mental health conditions. According to the British Columbia Government’s resources on human trafficking, mental illnesses may limit a person’s ability to consent and assess risk. Furthermore, individuals with mental health concerns may be more isolated than others, which can make them more susceptible to the tactics that traffickers use to make them feel safe and accepted. Once trust has been earned, perpetrators prey on the person’s feelings of shame and low self-esteem to trap them in a cycle of abuse. Traffickers may also use rewards and punishments to build an emotional connection with those they exploit; this is referred to as trauma bonding. Don’t allow the stigma of mental health hinder you to see, help, serve, and do what is right for another. 🚨Sentencing Alert🚨 This morning in Douglas County Court, Sylvonn Gibson accepted and was immediately sentenced regarding his plea agreement for his role of Human Trafficking in Douglas County. Mr. Gibson will spend the next 8 years in the department of corrections for his crimes within the 18th judicial district, with an additional 3 years on parole upon release. Mr. Gibson plead to (F3) Human Trafficking for Sexual Servitude of an adult. Thank you to all agencies involved and for fighting for those who deserve to be seen and not exploited. Happy Friday! We want to end this week with a defense attorney, a detective and a politician. (It’s almost like a bad bar joke..😁) Relationships is the theme of the week. At FSTS we don’t just partner with those who may think as we do but also with those who are defending those we work with in the court system in ways of mitigation assistance and service, we work tirelessly to make sure those who are caught up with charges under control of a trafficker get leniency and focused assistance. Detectives who do the daily work and make sure they are supported also to support the victim/survivor so their voice is never lost. FSTS also creates relationships within the Assembly in order to help to pass legislation that fills needs for those exploited, working across the aisle and educating the misconceptions and offering knowledge on the trends and current needs. Special shout out to Senior Deputy District Attorney, Ashley Morgan who spearheaded the crafting of this legislation; remember not all hero’s wear capes but at FSTS, she’s one to us! This important piece of legislation makes Human Trafficking a Crime of Violence now in the state of Colorado, as well as extends the statute of limitations from 3 years to 20 for an adult victim/survivor to come forward and report or be discovered in order to gain justice for the injustice done to them. Today in Denver District Court a jury found Robert Hawkins GUILTY of: 3 counts of Human Trafficking of an adult 1 count of Human Trafficking of a minor 1 count of Attempt to commit Human Trafficking of a Minor 4 counts of Pimping of an adult 1 count of Pimping of a child 1 count of Attempt to pimping of a child 1 count of Sex assault on a child 1 count of Attempted procurement of a child 3 counts of Contributing to the delinquency you a minor (2 counts of prostitution and one for alcohol). 2 counts of Assault 1st degree, (extreme indifference and deadly weapon). It’s clear the people and astoundingly thoughtful and thorough jury of Denver saw the calculated actions Mr. Hawkins brought upon these seven victims who all testified against him. FSTS has walked along side these victims since the inception of this case being discovered over 5 years ago and have advocated and served all Law Enforcement along the way in order to deliver justice for these amazingly strong individuals who stood up to their abuser and trafficker. The win was a marathon, not a sprint and we are proud to be able to stand with them encouraging, advocating and helping lift up all involved. We cant help but point out that this all happened during Women’s History month as well and this case was brought forth by women from the inception with detectives and advocates all the way to the completion with female prosecutors; women are amazing and certainly withstand the storms and band together. This morning our Founder who still very much works in the field daily, woke up to a text from one our amazing survivors she has been with for years. It is moments like this that you remember that the hard days turn into months, then years and all that consistency mattered. Mostly, that they noticed and felt seen, heard and supported. FSTS had a busy day! We attended Truckers Against Trafficking and were verbally recognized as a valid partner on their expert panel by multiple agencies. Then we headed over to testify in support of SB-35 which extends the statute of limitations for adults to report Human Trafficking as well as make it a Crime of Violence for all levels and forms of Human Trafficking. I’m happy to report it passed through the Judiciary Senate committee 4-1, and is now headed to the Senate floor! Survivor testimonies were powerful. Huge thanks to Kelly Dore (who was too busy being the social butterfly she is and missed the picture 😂). Make no mistake she was there and powerful too! Just think, 715 years have been handed down in total justice for victims we have supported through their cases, over 6,800 services given to help fulfill their needs for a better life, and 197 victims served in either a one time capacity or ongoing case management. Not to mention the countless partners added on to support our efforts, and relationships we have made. None of this is possible without all of you. We end this season humbled and thankful for these blessings. Most of all, we are grateful that so many victims/survivors have trusted us to enter their lives and help them. CHILDREN RIGHTS BILL!!!!!! Today FSTS hosted our first meeting with stakeholders regarding the upcoming bill we are helping Spearhead. We sat with experts in the legal field, elected officials, and with input from the survivor community. We will be having our next meeting in a few weeks and we are determined and setting the course to amend the CRS 18-7-402 – Soliciting for child prostitution statute as it currently allows probation for those who would be convicted of this. We believe those who commit this violation should carry at least the minimum range of department of corrections time in the presumptive range for a class 3 felony. Second sentencing of the day! This morning FSTS also stood as an advocate and voice as a representative for a victim in Adams County. The victim chose to have FSTS attend in her place. Juan Ibarra had pled guilty to a Class 3 Felony, SOLICITING FOR CHILD PROSTITUTION. Juan Ibarra was an identified Sex buyer. The facts of this case are all too common. A vulnerable teenage girl, on the run, approached, lured and groomed into a life she was not prepared for. We listened this morning as defense blamed this girl for running away and should have known better and using that as excuse for why their client, the defendant should receive probation. Senior Deputy District Attorney, Jennifer Sisk was fast to silence those claims when she stated, “This defendant found a vulnerable 15 year old girl, in a park. He may not have cause her vulnerability but he definitely exploited it. He can paint himself as a hero who helped this girl with food and shelter but that is far from the truth and shows his level of denial.” Judge Warner agreed when he stated, “The only mitigating factors in this case for the defendant are his lack of criminal history, nothing more. This was not reckless behavior on the defendants part, this was predatory.” The court sentenced Juan Ibarra to 8 years in the department of corrections which was the max able for his plea deal, with mandatory Sex Offender Registry upon release as well as 5 years on supervised release. Right now in the state of Colorado this charge is a probation eligible charge, this is something FSTS is working with legislators on currently; as we will not always get lucky to have such a dedicated prosecutor and judge to this specific violation. This morning FSTS stood with a minor victim and her therapeutic team while she listened to the fate of one of the defendants in her Human Trafficking case. This morning the named ‘Bottom’ in her case, Emerita Moore pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting the transportation of an individual to engage in prostitution. She was sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment, followed by 5 years of supervised release as well as be on the Sex offender registry. FSTS’s young warrior spoke clearly and directly to a Federal Judge who was on the line in the Eastern District of Virginia and read her Victim Impact Statement (Attached in this post with permission). This young girl was so bold, so brave, and with her words today made it known how incredibly far she has come. The AUSA stated, “Mrs. Moore arranged travel from Colorado to Virginia and made video calls to make this young girl feel comfortable to come work for the Trafficker and claimed she would be safe fully knowing that was untrue.” The Judge said something we found notable, “I wont look at your choices in a vacuum due to your background even though I think you knew what you were doing, but its clear your upbringing played a role and was compounded by your substance abuse. Your past provides content, but it does not excuse you. You get to choose when your past doesn’t define your future and you have continued to be apart of this dangerous cycle. This court wants this cycle broken. You were a victim at one time yes, but then you began to victimize others. Your previous arrests for a few short days in jail did not work so there now needs to be a deterrent for you to know this wont be tolerated in the future.” FSTS thanks all involved to helping see this case from recovery to sentencing, the Denver FBI Child Exploitation Human Trafficking Task Force, the Douglas County Sheriffs office, and the United States Attorney’s office of Eastern Virginia. We had over 150 people from the community in attendance, law enforcement from all over the state, and survivors who came to support FSTS. Today at the Douglas County Court house a Trafficker was sentenced to 14 years in the Department of Corrections as part of a plea agreement. Tyron Elam plead guilty to Human Trafficking as well as a COCCA charge. Judge Stuart made it clear to the court that he did not feel 14 years was sufficient for his crimes but was still going to accept it as part of a larger picture in this ongoing case. The district attorneys office is still working diligently on the remaining defendants in this case, and FSTS supports them completely. The work from recovering a 15 year old girl to this moment has been long, but today a small piece of justice was served for her victimization. This young girl is a textbook example of how the system and family can fail a child. Today her voice was heard, today she is sober, today she is set to graduate high school, today she is strong. Book shoutout!!! FSTS’s Founder and executive director read this book in 4 hours. Could not put it down. This is what she had to say… This book is raw, in your face, and real. Karleigh I think wrote this book to bring awareness, to show how things can look much different than the masses view when they think Human Trafficking; and she did just that. One thing Karleigh also did was encourage the work of FSTS. By her own words and unbeknownst to her, she validated our mission, goals and daily work. About last night… What an amazing event! The ladies at wine and dresses really know how to throw a party! This sold out event had it all; from the dress selection, to the auction, the amazing food and wine, and the culture FSTS was immersed in while people were educated on the true face of Human Trafficking and raising funds to go to those directly affected by it. We were blown away at all the hard work and especially loved the young ladies who came to give their time and give back to the youth community as well.
