I found this chunk of mycelium and noticed these ants either harvesting or feeding on this mycelium. Some species of ants cultivate fungi for food which mainly the larvae utilizes. here’s a single queen Acromyrmex versicolor colony that wasn’t doing well. Moved them to this experimental nest and fungus is now growing. They love to place brood closer to the heat. Last season was the first time I found queens with a fungus pellet (here in socal had to drive out 4 hours near the border and 4 hours back just to find them), so this the first time I have reared them past that first season. None are for sale, sorry. But so far they are all doing great. This itsy ant species is a species of Fungus-Growing Ant (Eurhopalothrix apharogonia)! Known only from the country of El Salvador, it is known from the holotype (specimen used for for formal description) and the paratype (help define scientific name and other details). The head is an usual shape and the ant is quite small. Little is known overall about this genus of any and even less so on this species. Nests aren't common and makes and queens haven't been found for most species, this one included. No zoo or aquarium exhibits this species. Mravolozi u epizodi: Uzdaj se u svoju lopatu! Kopanje i otkrivanje komora važan je dio života mirmekologa - tako dolaze u priliku izbrojati jedinke, doći do gljiva mrava fungouzgajivača, i naposlijetku naučiti nešto o biologiji pojedine vrste. Ovo iskapanje u srcu Brazila imalo je cilj sakupiti jedinke za sekvenciranje genoma vrste Mycetagroicus Inflatus. Kolonija je kidnapirana i avionom prebačena u Washington DC gdje danas živi za znanost u muzeju Smitshonian gdje se za nju brinu neki simpatični mravoljupci. Na kraju priče ostaje zakopati rupu i vratiti se našim ZG mravima.
