On August 5th, the crew received news of the outbreak of the First World War (1914 - 1918). Near Easter Island it united with the Graf Spee cruiser squadron and took part in the victorious naval battle of Coronel. "Pallada took part in the Russo-Japanese War. "The fourth HMS Colossus was a Colossus class second-class British battleship, launched in 1882 and commissioned in 1886. She had a displacement of 9,520 tons, and an armament of 4 × 12-inch breechloaders, 5 × 6-inch guns and had a respectable speed of 15.5 knots. She was one of the first, if not the first, modern battleship. She had several features which would be standard for all gun warships up to the Second World War including all steel construction, a main battery of breech loading major caliber guns (ie. 10 inches or greater) mounted in turrets and was propelled only by steam engines instead of a combination of steam and sails - as was common in the mid-19th century. Colossus and Edinburgh did well on sea-trials, exceeding their design speed. They threw up what is described as a "remarkable bow wave, which rose like a solid wall for thirteen feet, the like of which has never been observed." They had a quick roll, and because of the low freeboard and the long chases of the guns, the gun muzzles dipped into the sea at a roll of 13° when trained on the beam. "HMS Inflexible was one of three Invincible-class battlecruisers built for the Royal Navy before World War I and had an active career during the war. She tried to hunt down the German battlecruiser SMS Goeben and the light cruiser SMS Breslau in the Mediterranean Sea when war broke out and she and her sister ship Invincible sank the German armoured cruisers SMS Scharnhorst and SMS Gneisenau during the Battle of the Falkland Islands. Inflexible bombarded Turkish forts in the Dardanelles in 1915, but was damaged by return fire and struck a mine while maneuvering. She had to be beached to prevent her from sinking, but she was patched up and sent to Malta, and then Gibraltar for more permanent repairs. Transferred to the Grand Fleet afterwards, she damaged the German battlecruiser Lützow during the Battle of Jutland in 1916 and watched Invincible explode. 🌳✨ Das ist Sie: Eine 600 Jahre alte Eiche in der Toskana, um die sich viele Legenden und Erzählungen ranken. Der majestätische Baum hat eine Höhe von ca. 20 Metern. Es braucht aber mindestens fünf Personen, um den Stamm zu umarmen. Sehr beeindruckend ist aber der Kronendurchmesser von ca. 40 Metern. Unzählige verschlungene Äste, die zu jeder Jahreszeit eine Besonderheit zu bieten haben. Bei sonnigem Wetter formt die Eiche einen riesigen salonartigen Schattenplatz, im Herbst legt sich ein ausgedehnter Laub- und Moosteppich um den Stamm, und im Winter kann man die knorrigen, sich im Wind bewegenden Äste bestaunen. Unzählige Vögel, Insekten und andere Tiere haben seine Geschichte begleitet. Von Anfang an hat seine breite, niedrige aber weit ausgedehnte Gestalt zu Legenden und Erzählungen inspiriert. Seine Form und der Verlauf der großen Äste, die teilweise den Boden berühren, sollen einer Legende nach auf die Hexen zurückzuführen sein, die sich dort in manchen Nächten trafen. Sie sollen auf seinen Ästen gesungen und getanzt haben. Daher auch der Name "la Quercia delle Streghe" (die Eiche der Hexen). Viele nennen die Eiche aber auch die "Quercia di Pinocchio" (Pinocchios Eiche). Sie soll dem Schriftsteller Carlo Lorenzini eine große Inspiration für sein Kinderbuch „Die Abenteuer des Pinocchio“ gewesen sein. Die Eiche inspirierte die Szene, in der Pinocchio von zwei Räubern verfolgt wird, die seine Goldstücke stehlen wollen. Schließlich fingen sie Pinocchio und hängten ihn an den Baum. Pinocchio wurde von der Blauen Fee gerettet. Eine kleine Pflanze wurde so im Laufe ihres Lebens zur Legende. Wir möchten in Zukunft viele dieser Geschichten schreiben und mit euch zusammen die Urwälder von morgen mit all seinen Helden schaffen.
