She's a beauty! The @bessie_ellen dropped anchor in Torrisdale Bay! She was built in 1904 which twins her with Niall's great grandfather's yacht, the Medea, which is also still seaworthy (scroll right). For today's #Black&WhiteWednesday, I'm sharing this image of the US Coast Guard Eagle docked in New London, CT a few summers back! I was lucky enough to board the ship waaaaaay back (circa 1984) on one of our first trips up to Newport, RI. We were also very lucky to have had the opportunity to see it leave Portsmouth (NH) harbor and literally just make it under the train bridge, when we were heading up to Maine in 2019! According to the Coast Guard Academy's website, "The Barque Eagle arrived in New London in 1946. The ship was originally named the Horst Wessel, and was constructed by Adolf Hitler to train German naval engineers. The United States seized Eagle as a war reparation following WWII. Eagle has served ever since as a sail training platform for cadets of the U.S. Coast Guard." And Wikipedia adds, "She is one of only two active commissioned sailing vessels in the United States military today, along with USS Constitution which is ported in the Boston Harbor. She is the seventh Coast Guard cutter to bear the name in a line dating back to 1792, including the Revenue Cutter Eagle. Each summer, Eagle deploys with cadets from the United States Coast Guard Academy and candidates from the Officer Candidate School for periods ranging from a week to two months. These voyages fulfill multiple roles. The primary mission is training the cadets and officer candidates, but the ship also performs a public relations role for the Coast Guard and the United States. 'The Landing at Erramanga [Eromanga], one of the New Hebrides'. Painted in 1776 by William Hodges. Cook's main purpose on this expedition was to locate, if possible, the much talked-of but unknown Southern Continent and further expand knowledge of the central Pacific islands, in which Hodges' records of coastal profiles were in part important for navigational reasons. But, the party also sought to understand and record different Pacific societies, establishing a hierarchy of what they saw as different stages of development. Cook was in the New Hebrides from 4 June to 13 September 1774, during which time he spent six weeks making a careful survey of the island group. On 4 August 1774 he moored the 'Resolution' off the coast of the island of Eromanga. Following apparently peaceful entreaties from the local inhabitants to come ashore, Cook and a party of marines embarked for the beach. What followed was the most violent of the party's encounters with Melanesian Societies, with Cook firing on the chieftain and his party forced to return to the 'Resolution'. This painting is an official record of the event, composed in London for engraving in the published account of the voyage, and has adopted the traditional mode of history painting. The 'Royal George' and other vessels. Painted in 1778 by Dominic Serres. The sad fate of the Royal George happened on the morning of 29 August 1782 while lying at Spithead as flagship of Rear Admiral Richard Kempenfelt, the 'Royal George' was listed slightly to port, the guns being run out on that side so that the carpenter could make a repair on the starboard side at the waterline. At the same time, a hoy came along the port side to deliver stores. The weight of the stores increased the list to port to the point where water began to come in over the sills of the lower-deck gun ports. The ship then rapidly filled and sank with the loss of about 900 lives, many being women and children. Kempenfelt also perished. Created by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute, the main partner for the performing arts of UNESCO, the intention of this special day is to celebrate dance, revel in the universality of this art form across all political, cultural, and ethnic barriers, and bring people together with a common language—dance.
