Last Friday, Conway Scenic operated an eight-car ballast train on the Mountain Division. This was powered by both former Maine Central GP38s (locomotives 252 and 255) with our caboose positioned at the west end of the train. This was the heaviest non-revenue train to work the Mountain Division in many years. It was run in conjunction with on-going repair and maintenance of the Mountain Division in preparation for commencement of our late-Spring excursion schedule. Our Sawyer River and Mountaineer excursions are scheduled to resume operation on Memorial Day weekend. Excursions to Conway will also resume at that time. Conway Scenic is operating weekend excursions between North Conway and Bartlett, New Hampshire through May 19, 2024. CSX L134 seen twice on Ashland Train Day. Pictured first is the first trip, pulling a 34 car mixed freight thru Doswell, Virginia. Leading is a 51 year old EMD GP38-2, CSX 2720, built in 1973 and originally running for Penn Central as PC 8051, before becoming a part of Conrail. She would roam the high iron with Conrail for 23 years, until the big split. She then became a CSX locomotive, where she still runs to this day. :). Pictured second is L134 on the return trip, running light thru Ashland, VA. Leading is a slightly younger, 43 year old EMD GP40-2, CSX 6341, built in 1981 and originally operated by the Baltimore & Ohio as BO 4447. The 4447 is a special unit among the rest, as she was the last four axle unit delivered to the B&O Railroad. She roamed the high iron with the Baltimore & Ohio until the big merger in 1987. She became a CSX unit, and like the 2720, still runs to this day. A nice Farmrail locomotive taking the weekend off in Enid, OK. Farmrail is a cool little short line railroad in Western Oklahoma. Founded in the 1980s, and as their name implies, they primarily haul agricultural commodities throughout western Oklahoma, and interchange with BNSF at Enid. Farmrail has also done well, however, in supporting the local oilfield, and they are also seen moving crude oil, drilling fluids, and frac sand on their routes. ~It Has to be Tonight | Filling up the Buffer~ With Cando waiting across the North Saskatchewan River and two trains having recently cleared the Beamer Industrial Spur, I knew my third and final train of the day had to be on its way soon. The moody clouds complimented the stick-season surroundings, and I knew Cando would be the cherry on top of this scene. With my composition ready, all I had to do was wait. I was ready to go home and have supper, but I knew if I didn’t get this shot, I wouldn’t ever. Mere minutes later, the four-pack of EMDs could be heard throttling up as they got underway, making their way up the Beamer. UP 815 shoves a tanker for Blommer Chocolate Company across Grand Avenue in Chicago. Job 60B (YPR60B) running downtown to here or the Chicago Tribune is doomed, with Blommer apparently on their last car or two before shutting down in late May, and the Tribune wrapping up possibly as soon as early June. I was grateful to make it downtown for a movement, albeit no Tribune work on this day.
