I didn't have any idea on how to make a wedding video (there's a someone else's dream i should be interpreting ๐๐) So, i stumbled upon the last photo and then traced it back to Harry Whittier Frees. Although some of these photos made me smile, some gave me an opposite uneasy feeling... I kinda digged down and then I found someone who doubted these were cruelty free. I think that might be true, especially when i stare at the little dogge with its narrowed eyes. I'm showing the earlier, cropped and unfinished version of my copy (using graphite pencil) of an adorable dressed up puppy ๐ถ and kitten ๐ฑ photo I found in the #libraryofcongress collection (all public domain.) Before there were cat memes and dog influencers, there were the dogs and cats of Harry Whittier Frees. โฃโฃ โฃโฃ Frees was born in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1879. One day at a family birthday party, as people were distributing and putting on birthday hats, someone put a hat on the family cat and Frees snapped a picture. The image became an instant success after a postcard manufacturer bought it in Freesโs first sale. It was Freesโs eureka moment, and from then on, he photographed animals posed in human situations with props, and often with captions. The year was 1905 and Harry was just a teen. โฃโฃ โฃโฃ Freesโs early work included his family cat Rags and a few props. As his work evolved and became more elaborate, he used live models that he rented from neighbors, breeders or pet shops. There was no photo trickery - he used 1/5th of a second exposures and held the animals in position using stiff costuming, pins, and forks. His only assistant was his housekeeper, Mrs. Annie Edelman, who sewed all of the animal costumes. โฃโฃ โฃโฃ Freesโs photos were extremely popular, appearing in novelty postcards, magazine spreads, calendars and children's books. He even published many books of his work. โฃโฃ โฃโฃ But making the photographs was not easy. In fact, the process was so challenging and nerve wracking that Frees only photographed his furry subjects for three months out of the year. Only about 30 negatives out of every 100 were usable. Frees used the remainder of the year to recuperate from exhaustion and to think up new ideas. โฃโฃ โฃโฃ In Frees's book โAnimal Land on the Air,โ he described the challenges of getting animals to pose. "Rabbits are the easiest to photograph in costume, but incapable of taking many 'human' parts. Puppies are tractable when rightly understood, but the kitten is the most versatile animal actor, and possesses the greatest variety of appeal. The pig is the most difficult to deal with, but effective on occasion. The best period of young animal models is a short one, being when they are from 6 to 10 weeks of age.
