“During those empty sleepless nights, I thought a lot about the Knife as an idea. A knife was a tool, an acquired meaning from the use we made of it. Language too, was a knife. It could cut open the world and reveal its meaning, its inner workings, its secrets, its truths. It could cut through from one reality to another. Language was my knife. If I had unexpectedly been enough in an unwanted knife fight, maybe this was the knife I could use to fight back.” - Salman Rushdie. #salmanrushdie #knife #memoir #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #readersofig #readmorebooks #booksof2024 #bookreview #bookrecommendations #bookgoals #bookviews # #bookclub #bookview #bookstack #bookblog #readmore #instaread #booksoutside #bookquotes #bookworms #bookphoto #instabook #bookpics

Finished yet another book today, curled up on the lounge while keeping warm on this cool morning. Servo, by David Goodwin, is an honest and hilarious telling of the life of a servo console operator, in Werribee, a suburb just outside of Melbourne. Many moons ago, 2005 to be exact, at just 19 years young, I too found myself working at a servo after being in a job I hated for 6 months. With nothing to lose I applied for the job and with absolutely zero retail experience, I surprisingly got the job. My site was directly opposite a police station and we only traded until 10:30pm every day. Whilst I’ve never experienced a ‘graveyard’ or ‘dog watch’ shift, I certainly experienced my share of bat shit crazy people that David writes about in his book. I was eventually offered a Cert III Retail Traineeship, and was paid $8.50 an hour to do all the boring tasks I was paid double for previous to accepting the traineeship. Customers didn’t care what you were being paid. They just saw you as a face to complain to and whinge about the price of fuel and smokes. There are many stories I could share, but I think David covers it so perfectly. You really do get to a point where you either get out early or you end up staying, trapped behind the anti jump wire. In my case we had no anti jump wire back then, and about 18 months after I started there the site was sold and we were all promised our jobs would be safe. This was not to be, and with 48 hours notice we were asked to immediately leave the site as we were no longer employed. Thus ending my career as a console operator. Servo will open your eyes to what it’s really like to be a console operator and also just how horrible and yet wickedly entertaining customers can truly be. A must read for anyone who has been a console operator before and those who would like a reason to never become a console operator. P.S. Swipe left to see a baby faced me wearing a ‘witches hat’ traffic cone on my head while at work at Mobil Toronto, which is now Shell Toronto. #Servo #DavidGoodwin #Werribee #consoleoperator #book #author #memoir

#bookreview Hey #memoir fans; have you read #HowtoSayBabylon as yet? After coming across this book recommendation last year by @bookofcinz - I dived right into it and got the audio version on @audible. I finished listening to the over 16 hours of audio in less than 48 hrs. I could not stop listening - I was hooked from the very opening. @safiyasinclair delivered her story with such poise and grace - it was easy to listen as she brought the words to life and I could easily envision each scenario and feel her every emotion as she brought me on her journey from childhood to adulthood, finding her own voice in a world that tried to tell her who she should be. This book for me was not so much about Safiya defying the teaching of her Rastafarian father, but it was a story of finding oneself, it was about a woman defending her womanhood, it was about rebelling against a patriarchal system that polices women and try to tell us what we should do. Through her story, I learned so much about her parents and her siblings - their story is woven within the pages of her story. As a Jamaican who is close in age with Safiya, I found myself so connected to her story - so much familiarity, yet so many differences. I admire her grace, empathy, and fight. It is a solid 10/10 for me - a 5 star read. A must-read for any woman, any Jamaican girl and woman, for any Caribbean woman. Let me know what you thought about #HowToSayBabylon if you've read it. If not, Based on this review, would you read it? Let me know in the comments 📚🌟 Ps. Congrats to @safiyasinclair on all her awards and recognition - well deserved 💕 #bookcommunity #bookstagram #fansofmemoirs #memoirs #lovereadingmemoirs

“It was a hot July day, many decades later, that I happened to be in New York. I was house-sitting for a friend, spending a week in her apartment at 145th and Broadway. It was the closest I’d been in years to the hospital that had once been my home. One morn-ing, I decided to walk north. My best days are those that I walk the city, unfettered and directionless, and so it took me a minute to understand where I was going. We are drawn back, aren’t we? Even when we don’t mean to be and don’t want to be. The past is there, waiting for us. I walked the mile or so up Riverside Drive, until I reached my once address: 722 West 168th Street. Of course nothing in this city remains as it was, and this is no exception: the building, with its grand architecture, is no longer the home of the State Psychiatric Institute. Now it is home to Columbia University’s School of Public Health. This is where I lived, I want to say to someone, as I point up to the fifth floor. But who would care?” #bookcover #readingnow #memoir #americanlitterature #bookoholic #instabook #lecturesenvo #committed #suzannescanlon

Even when Curry declared his eligibility for the NBA, a scouting report noted that he “lacks great height, length or strength, and possesses below average lateral quickness…making him a potential defensive liability.” Proving all of his doubters wrong, today Stephen Curry is a four-time NBA Champion, two-time league MVP, and Finals MVP winner. My Wife Said You May Want to Marry Me An inspiring memoir of life, love, loss, and new beginnings by the widower (Jason B. Rosenthal) of best-selling author and filmmaker Amy Krouse Rosenthal 🌿 On March 3, 2017, Amy Krouse Rosenthal penned an op-ed piece for the New York Times’ “Modern Love” column —”You May Want to Marry My Husband.” It appeared ten days before her death from ovarian cancer. A heartbreaking, wry, brutally honest, and creative play on a personal ad—in which a dying wife encouraged her husband to go on and find happiness after her demise—the column quickly went viral, reaching more than five million people worldwide. In My Wife Said You May Want to Marry Me, Jason describes what came next: his commitment to respecting Amy’s wish, even as he struggled with her loss. Surveying his life before, with, and after Amy, Jason ruminates on love, the pain of watching a loved one suffer, and what it means to heal—how he and their three children, despite their profound sorrow, went on. Jason’s emotional journey offers insights on dying and death and the excruciating pain of losing a soulmate, and illuminates the lessons he learned. As he reflects on Amy’s gift to him—a fresh start to fill his empty space with a new story—Jason describes how he continues to honor Amy’s life and her last wish, and how he seeks to appreciate every day and live in the moment while trying to help others coping with loss. My Wife Said You May Want to Marry Me is the poignant, unreserved, and inspiring story of a great love, the aftermath of a marriage ended too soon, and how a surviving partner eventually found a new perspective on life’s joys in the wake of tremendous loss. Just finished this book today. This is the first book I read this year that greatly upset me at some points. And yet I found myself craving that? Maybe I like emotional masochism, or maybe I like seeking relatable kinds of vulnerability. That determination is up to my future self to decide.  In this memoir, Zauner explores her tense relationship with her mother growing up and the further complications of all her familial relationships as her mother withers away from cancer. She touches upon how her mother functions as the linchpin of her racial identity as a half-white, half-Korean girl and how both their generational gap and identity gap make it difficult to understand each other. Zauner unflinchingly describes the feeble physical state her mother ends up in and how her deterioration affects the psyche of Zauner and those around her. She reveals moments of hostility and ugly words exchanged in her youth by her and her mother, as well as the guilt she felt for troubling her mother. Zauner vividly captures the strained mother-daughter relationship, depicting all the constant critiques, scrutiny, and fussing in almost too intense detail. (Continued in comments) #cryinginhmart #michellezauner #koreanamerican #koreanfoodie #dealingwithgrief #asianamericanartist #asianamericanwomen #asianamericanliterature #memoir #memoirwriting #japanesebreakfast #motherdaughterrelationship #foodculture

Every story has its beginning. Some chapters are written in quiet corners, hidden in the shadows. Others are meant to be shared and brought to light. I’ve been hiding in the shadows, fighting what I know needs to be in the light. I’ve kept my identity hidden until now, not out of mystery, but out of fear. Fear of judgment, fear of not being enough, and fear of rejection. I hid behind words without showing my face, worried about the judgments that might come with it. But the truth is, our stories aren’t just about what we create on the page — they’re also about our personal journeys and the courage it takes to tell them. Today, I am turning the page. I’m ready to face my fears and embrace every part of my story, just as I hope to inspire you to embrace yours. I believe in the power of authenticity — in the connection that comes from real moments, real stories, and real faces. So, here I am. A storyteller, a dreamer, and now, no longer just a faceless name. I’m excited to grow this community, to share more openly and connect more deeply with all of you. Thank you for all your support — it means the world to me, and I can’t wait to embark on this new chapter together and hope we can all inspire each other to live our stories boldly. 💫✌🏼💛 XOXO cb❤️ #TooMuchMemoir #TooMuch #Memoir #NewAuthor #MustRead #NewReads #WritersOfInstagram #Bookstagram #BookWorm #IGReads #BooksOfInstagram #Bookish #Books #ReadersOfInstagram #BookLovers #Inspiration #Happiness #Growth #Resilience #PersonalGrowth #SelfDiscovery #AuthenticLiving #Untamed #Unfiltered #Unapologetic #Authenticity #EmbraceYourself #LiveBoldly #AuthorReveal #EmbracingFear

💥When did you (or your loved one) first hear those words? 💥 Share in the comments. Some days are etched into your memory. 14 years ago today, I got the call from a doctor who wasn't even mine and heard the words, "You have 'a' #cancer." Always wondered why he called it 'a' cancer. I don't dwell on this date or those words. But remember? You bet I do, though I do so quietly now. I keep writing and sharing about this day and other stuff because someone else heard those words today, or will next week, or next month, or next year. Maybe I can help someone who hears them feel less alone. #keepingitteal #breastcancer #nosugarcoating #cancerdiagnosis #cancersucks #cancerwasnotagift #cancersupport

No wonder why this book, written by Michelle Zauner, a musician with the stage name 'Japanese Breakfast,' has become a bestseller in nonfiction. Zauner's dual identity as a musician and writer enriches her narrative, bringing unique depth to her exploration of grief and identity. Her insightful reflections indeed mirror her lyrical skills, making 'Crying in H Mart' a memorable and impactful read. She effortlessly translates her talent for emotionally resonant storytelling from her music to her prose. The memoir is not only a tribute to her mother but also an exploration of the universality of grief. Through her specific experiences, Zauner touches on more universal themes of family, culture, and the search for meaning through the lens of food and tradition. The narrative is framed within the aisles of H Mart, a popular Korean grocery store chain in America, which becomes a powerful symbol of Zauner's connection to her Korean roots and her mother. The store evokes profound memories of her mother and the foods they shared, which are recounted in rich, vivid detail throughout the book. These culinary experiences are not just nostalgic but are also acts of reclamation and healing as Zauner navigates her complex identity as a Korean-American. I can never stand it when the topic turns to parents, especially moms or dads. Growing up with Asian cultural parenting, I know exactly what Michelle mentioned in her book about the love language of Asian moms. They love you, but they won't show it directly. It's not like what's shown in movies about how white people love and take care of their children. It's different and harder to decipher It's beautifully written #kumulonimbusbook #cryinginhmart #japanesebreakfast #review #memoir

🦋Emily’s Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 This was the book I needed to read. I did not know who Dolly Alderton was before I read this book but had heard many good things towards Everything I know about love. This was a genuinely witty, heartwarming memoir that had me laughing, crying, and really contemplating my life at 28. We all experience love and loss. As someone who is in my late 20’s and trying to figure out what the heck I am doing with my life, I completely related to Dolly’s experiences. Dolly’s dating stories were incredibly relatable. Her experience growing up and finding out what love truly means had me feel like I was cuddled up in a warm blanket. Love isn’t just with a romantic partner but also your family and friendships. Although this book took place in the UK and there were some words that I had zero clue what they meant, her comedic point of view and words were everything. If you’re single, in a relationship, going through a heartbreak this is the book for you. Summary: Dolly Alderton has experienced it all when it comes to being an adult. Everything I know about love recounts bad dates, good friends and realizing that you are enough. Growing up, getting older and learning to navigate life and its triumphs and losses, Dolly talks about it all. . . . #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks #readmorebooks #memoir #selfhelp #bookblogger #dollyalderton

'When I think about it, I don't remember how old I was when I first thought about killing my father. I only know that I thought about it, and that I was not yet ten. Mom. Believe me when I say I am not crazy. Believe me when I say I wish you could hear all the thoughts I’ve never said, all the thoughts I've been too afraid to say, and all the thoughts I’ve wished would disappear. Believe me when I say I wish you could hear none of these thoughts at all. The very idea of you knowing me so intimately scares me. But so does the idea of you not knowing me at all.' --- 'MMDTSP' is a quiet, contemplative recounting of life and love and vulnerability and pain. A stunning debut that is both lyrical and meditative, written by a daughter, learning how to live. Author's note: MMDTSP is a memoir that is currently in production. Do life’s constant changes overwhelm you? One author may have a solution. Marvin Olasky has lived his life at the crossroads of major cultural shifts. His new memoir, “Pivot Points: Adventures on the Road to Christian Contentment,” chronicles it in depth. From a radical-left ideologue to a leading voice of Christian journalism, Olasky's journey is marked by dramatic conversions and unanticipated turns. And it’s underpinned by a profound realization of God’s persistent presence. The book weaves through his personal crises and public controversies. Olasky advocates for a fearless embrace of change, bolstered by faith and a rejection of fear. But his story is not just about adapting. It’s about thriving spiritually amidst the inevitable pivots of life. #christ #faith #quotes #theology #memoir #spirituality

Who doesn’t love book mail, and this week’s is a treasure trove. Which would you read next? Isabel Banta’s “Honey” (Celadon Books) is an addictive coming of age story that follows the meteoric rise of popstar Amber Young as she navigates fame and self discovery in the late 90s and early 2000s. “Miss Morgan’s Book Brigade” (Atria Books) is the next brilliant new novel by New York Times bestselling author Janet Skeslien Charles, based on the true story of Jessie Carson, the American librarian, who changed the literary landscape of France. And don’t you want to know The Whole Story (Matt Holt Books), former Whole Foods CEO John Mackey’s intimate and provocative account of the rise of the iconic company and the personal and spiritual journey that inspired its remarkable impact. Perhaps you may be intrigued by an unforgettable tale of the Cold War and a CIA Codebreaker, who risks everything to free her father from an east German prison, as told by bestselling author Katherine Reay in her “The Berlin Letters” (Harper Muse). New York Times bestselling author Jami Attenberg gives readers A Reason to See You Again (Ecco), a dazzling novel of family, following a troubled mother and her two daughters through a swiftly changing American landscape as they seek lives they can fully claim as their own. And who doesn’t love a haunting and powerful story of female friendships and secrets in a Washington DC boarding house during the McCarthy era, especially if it is told by New York Times bestseller Kate Quinn, in The Briar Club (William Morrow). Laurie Elizabeth Flynn will make you wonder what happens when the husband you thought had died years ago shows up alive, in Till Death Do Us Part (Simon & Schuster). Based on astonishing real events, Kate Thompson‘s The Wartime Book Club is a love letter to the power of books in the darkest of times (Forever). #adventuresbythebook #novelnetwork #toberead #bookclubs #historicalfiction #domesticsuspense #mccarthy #familyfiction #wholefoods #memoir #librarians #booksaboutbooks #debutnovel

"A smart, powerful memoir..." A SURVIVOR'S EDUCATION by Joy Neumeyer receives a starred review from @kirkus_reviews! Out from @publicaffairsbooks in August 2024. Find out more below. 🌟📘 On a picturesque campus in the springtime, a young woman is shoved backwards down a concrete stairway by her partner. This follows months of slowly escalating violence. She ultimately ends the relationship, flees across the country, and initiates a Title IX case against him. She knows what she has experienced and survived: gaslighting, assault, manipulation, mortal threats. But others say, simply, that she hasn’t—and that her boyfriend is the real victim. Trained to interpret the past, she finds herself swept up in a struggle to define the truth about her life. In this poignant self-investigation, historian and journalist Joy Neumeyer explores how violence against women is portrayed, perceived, and adjudicated today, decades after the inception of Title IX and in the immediate wake of MeToo. Interweaving the harrowing account of the abuse she experienced as a graduate student at Berkeley with those of others who faced violence, on campus and beyond, Neumeyer offers a startling look at how the hotly-debated Title IX system has altered university politics and culture, and uncovers the willful misremembrance that enables misconduct on scales large and small. Deeply researched, daringly inquisitive, and resonant for our times, A Survivor's Education reveals the entanglement of storytelling, abuse, and power, and how we can balance narrative and evidence in our attempts to determine what “really” happened.

ꜰᴏʀᴍᴀᴛ : ᴀʀᴄ ʟᴇɴɢᴛʜ : 295ᴘɢꜱ ᴋɪɴᴅʟᴇ ᴜɴʟɪᴍɪᴛᴇᴅ : 5/15 ... When Monica James says she's doing a memoir, you say "I'm making it my bitch.. as soon as I'm not drunk in Denver." If you're nervous to dive in because of the word memoir, look past it. I promise you won't regret it. James poured her heart into this one. Every word came straight from her soul, and you can feel the emotional connection to "Z" immediately upon entering into the Love Hard world. Love Hard reads like a messy love story you just can't get enough of. Spanning over a decade of time, we follow Z through her first crush, her first love and the search for what makes her happy, even if that means leaving those who love her behind. Until the very final chapter, you will have no idea where our MFC is going to end up... and will question where you even want her to end up. Also, can I just throw in there how much I love that she got herself on that cover. Girl is ultimate girl crush material. Ope, and don't think you won't spend the whole book trying to figure out who people are. (I see you, 🐇!) '𝙻𝚘𝚟𝚎 𝚖𝚎𝚜𝚜𝚢. 𝙻𝚘𝚟𝚎 𝚕𝚘𝚗𝚐. 𝙻𝚘𝚟𝚎 𝚜𝚙𝚘𝚗𝚝𝚊𝚗𝚎𝚘𝚞𝚜𝚕𝚢. 𝙻𝚘𝚟𝚎 𝚠𝚒𝚝𝚑𝚘𝚞𝚝 𝚛𝚎𝚐𝚛𝚎𝚝. Book Recommendation: When They Call You a Terrorist by Patrisse Khan-Cullors & Asha Bandele. This is an important read. It's not an easy read, though. It brought me to tears more than once. It's about the life of Patrisse and how her part in founding BLM came to be. It is such a well written memoir that has really stuck with me over the years. I recently listened to the audiobook, which I highly recommend as well. #bookrecommendation #bookrecs #BooksWorthReading #memoir #booklover #booknerd #bookstagram #reading #readingbooks #read #readersofinstagram #nonfictionreads #nonfictionbooks #nonfictionnerd #nonfiction #BLM #patrissekhan-cullors

HIJAB BUTCH BLUES | Lamya H Genre: Memoir / Essays My thoughts: I thought this book was really moving and done in a unique way where Lamya layered her religion and her coming out in a captivating way that had someone like me who has no interest in religion interested to keep reading. Lamya is both Muslim and a Lesbian. Each identity is so important to who she is and while they shouldn’t coexist together to many in her Muslim community, she found a family of people like her in her new home and each person was so important to her journey. For someone who couldn’t come out to their family Lamya found a found family that cared for her in exactly the way she needed. Rating: Highly recommend! 5/5

🫶everything i know about love review🫶 rating: 4.25⭐️ I really enjoyed this book. It’s been awhile since I’ve read a memoir and this is just what I wanted at the moment. Dolly Alderton is a fantastic storyteller and she’s also so funny which made this such a pleasant and wholesome read. Growing older is definitely something that occupies my thoughts. This book discusses the fears and joys of growing out of your 20s and into your 30s, so I feel like I read this book at just the right time. I also loved how hopeful it is and that it reinforces the idea that even as we age we are capable of success and happiness and youthfulness all throughout our lives. We get to see Dolly mature throughout the novel and gain a sense of self and inner peace. I loved her and her girl group and wish them all so much happiness. The recipes were a nice touch! I’d like to try some of them at some point! I’m really excited to read Dolly’s other books soon!

***New Book*** I am overjoyed to announce the publication of my first literary book, “Mother Archive: A Dominican Family Memoir”, forthcoming this fall with University of Iowa Press @uiowapress For the past decade as a photographer, I have been using images, both found and my own, as a way to piece together my family history, one that is muddled by the ripples of political violence and a legacy of silence. Photographs have allowed me, thus far, to articulate things I was not ready to talk about with words. This book is the language I was missing to fully understand the place where I come from. Mother Archive is a reckoning of the turbulent relationship I have with my mother and the Dominican Republic, the island where I was born. Mixing found images, news clippings, photos from my family’s archive, and images I’ve made, I revisit my home and country of origin, places riddled with a history of violence and a tradition of erasure. This image-text memoir spans three generations across three different countries, working as a kind of map where I trace back instances in my history to help me understand my own experience as a mother. Thank you to @cornellmfa_imagetext and @sackettstreet, where the ideas for this book started to crystallize. And my undying gratitude to my friends and family who supported me on this journey. The book is now available for pre-order at University of Iowa Press, link in my bio. Soon available for pre-order on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. #photography #literature #photobooksbywomen #caribbean #caribbeanliterature #motherhood #family #memoir #dominican #dominicanliterature #history #dominicanhistory
