1909 Wolf & Co. The Drafting of the Declaration of Independence 🇺🇸 I discovered this card a couple of months ago. I bought up every copy I could find (with the exception of the copies I told my friends about so they could pick them up for cheap also). Had them graded by SGC, and here are the results. Every copy besides my personal copy (the 4.5) is already sold. I’m fortunate to have a fairly large platform on Twitter/X, and since posting it, this card has exploded in popularity. #DidYouKnow? #OnThisDay, April 30, 1789, former Revolutionary War general George Washington was sworn in as the first President of the United States on the balcony of Federal Hall - in New York City! Federal Hall had been New York City Hall prior to the American Revolution, served as the location of the Stamp Act Congress in 1765, and was where the Congress of the Confederation - the precursor to the United States Congress - met between 1785 and 1789. Robert Livingston, Chancellor of New York, administered the oath of office to Washington as the Supreme Court did not yet exist (Washington would appoint them, with John Jay as Chief Justice, the following year). Interestingly, Vice President John Adams took his oath of office nine days before Washington - on April 21, 1789 - when he was sworn in to preside over the new U.S. Senate. Washington's residence, the first presidential mansion, was also located in New York City. The Samuel Osgood House, located on Cherry Street in lower Manhattan, became the Washingtons' home and workplace until February of 1790, when they moved to the much larger Alexander Macomb House on Broadway, near Bowling Green. Doesn’t this warm your heart?!? All these kids in front of the @metopera !!!! It’s hard for me to look at this pic without tears of joy welling up in my eyes. My son’s school was SO grateful for their first experience at the opera! They got to see #JohnAdams #ElNiño at the most famous opera house in the world- right here in their own backyard! Many of them talked to me at length recalling all their favorite parts of the show.🥰 This picture was just Judah’s 6th grade class. 7th and 8th graders were there too! Along with faculty and staff! Exposure is CRITICAL, so being able to work this out for them was a literal dream come true. Our selection this #finisfriday is from our copy of a Letter from Alexander Hamilton, Concerning the Public Conduct and Character of John Adams, Esq., President of the United States. Penned in 1800, Hamilton attacked Adams while also recommending Charles Cotesworth Pinckney as a better candidate for the Federalist Party in the upcoming presidential election. This election became known as the Revolution of 1800, in which Thomas Jefferson, Democratic-Republican Party candidate, defeated candidate and incumbent, President John Adams, the first peaceful transfer of power from one pollical party to another. Within the pages of this political pamphlet, Hamilton viciously attacked Adams and closed with a tepid endorsement, ending with today’s finis. Hamilton went on to mail this pamphlet to two hundred Federalists, which then fell into the hands of the opposing party, which they then proceeded to print to the public. This not only split the Federalist Party but is said to have handed the election to the Democratic-Republican Party, destroying Hamilton’s position among Federalists.
