The name Hazel Pierce (born April 10, 1893; here with Desi Arnaz as a gum-chewing chorine in “Ricky Loses His Voice”, in 1952), will mean little to some, but to Lucille Ball enthusiasts, Hazel Pierce was a mainstay of “I Love Lucy” and later “The Lucy Show”. Because she was the same general height and weight as Lucille Ball, she was hired to be her camera and lighting stand-in. Desi Arnaz also had a stand-in. His name was Bennett Green. • Born Hazel Harris in Los Angeles, California, she started out in vaudeville as a dancer, before teaming up with Wesley Pierce, whom she married, and together formed a ‘Pierce & Harris’, a comedic dance act. • By the time “I Love Lucy” came along, Hazel was already widowed (for a time she lived in Lucille Ball’s guesthouse). In return for her stand-in work, she was regularly given small roles on the show, usually in the background, as a party guest or waitress, but sometimes even given a character name or a line or two, as in the episode “The Club Election” (1953), as Grace Munson (the recurring role was later taken over by Ruth Brady). • Hazel also worked on the first season of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” (as a coffee shop waitress in “Lucy Goes to Sun Valley”, 1958) and 27-epiodes of “The Lucy Show”, between 1962-67, her last being “Lucy Sues Mooney”, in 1967, featuring Mary Jane Croft as Mary Jane Lewis. 70 years ago today, the I Love Lucy episode “Lucy and Ethel Buy the Same Dress” aired. The Wednesday Afternoon Fine Arts League is going to do a show on late night television. Lucy and Ethel plan to sing “Friendship,” but discover they both have bought the same dress to wear for the duet. This was Shirley Mitchell’s first episode as Marion Strong; a role she would play the role twice more during this season. The character had previously appeared in season two played by Margie Liszt. Shirley Mitchell had worked several times on My Favorite Husband, as did Doris Singleton. Ruth Perrott, another one of the club women, was a regular as Katy the maid. This script was based on the My Favorite Husband episode “Liz Appears on Television.” Marion Strong was named after Lucille Ball’s best friend from Jamestown High School and the other club members were all named for other real life people. Lou Ann Hall was Vivian Vance’s sister and Jane Sebastian was Vivian’s close friend. Rosalind McKee was writer Madelyn Pugh’s sister. To get Ricky interested in emceeing the club show, Lucy suggests as an alternative Dan Jenkins, who makes music with tissue paper and comb. Dan Jenkins was an entertainment journalist who was a great support to Lucy and Desi during the Red Scare a few days prior to this episode’s filming. Fred calls Ethel “Ethel Louise Mertz.” Later in the season, in “The Million Dollar Idea,” she will be called Ethel Roberta before being established as Ethel Mae the following year. Cole Porter wrote the song “Friendship” for the 1939 Broadway musical “Du Barry Was a Lady.” Lucy sang the song in the 1943 film adaptation, in which she starred. Lucy and Vivian later reprised their rendition on The Mike Douglas Show in 1968. On the topic of dresses, Elois Jenssen joined the I Love Lucy team with the start of the new season. Jenssen, who had designed Lucy’s costumes for the 1947 thriller Lured, was responsible for creating Lucy’s wardrobe on the series. Starting with this episode, I Love Lucy would be produced on a Monday to Thursday schedule instead of Tuesday through Friday. Lucy kept this schedule for the rest of her career.

60 years ago today, The Lucy Show’s second season premiere, "Lucy Plays Cleopatra," aired. The Danfield Ladies’ Volunteer Fire Department puts on a fundraising performance of Antony and Cleoptra. Lucy lands the role of the Queen of the Nile and casts Vivian as Mark Antony. Starting with the second season, The Lucy Show was filmed in color. CBS, however, continued to broadcast the series in black and white. The new season also introduced a fresh opening credits sequence. Cleopatra was all the rage at this time. The 20th Century-Fox extravaganza, released in June 1963, was the costliest movie in Hollywood history to date and garnered an unprecedented number of headlines for the scandalous coupling of stars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Lucy, her mother DeDe, and Gary Morton were in attendance at the film’s Hollywood premiere. After a long day at work, Lucy kept dozing off during the picture! Lucy Carmichael, on the other hand, claims she's seen the four hour epic twelve times! "Lucy Plays Cleopatra" featured the second appearance of Hans Conried as Professor Gitterman of the Danfield Academy of Voice. The character was named after studio manager Gayle Gitterman. It was an inside joke to name the voice teacher after the real life soft-spoken Gitterman. This was Conried's last appearance in a Lucy episode for a decade. He next appeared in the sixth season premiere of Here's Lucy. Mary Wickes made her debut as fellow firefighter Frances in this installment and she would play the character twice more this season. Hazel Pierce, Lucy's stand-in, played Mary Lou and Renita Reachi, Vivian's stand-in, portrayed Colleen. These ever present bit players had the rare opportunity to speak lines and joined the other ladies in their "Hello!" song-and-dance number. Today for #womencrushwednesday we continue our look at frequent “Lucy” background character Joan Carey – with a different spin. Next up in our look at the career of Lucille Ball’s long-time stand-in would have been Lucy, The Robot, an episode in which she did not technically appear in, but she was nonetheless a part of the episode. On May 1, 1966, the CBS special “The Magic of Broadcasting” took viewers behind the scenes on The Lucy Show. Being shot that week was Lucy, The Robot and in the rare and insightful clips contained in the program, we can see Joan at work. Placed beside Ball’s long-time Girl Friday, Hazel Pierce, a very familiar face to Lucy fans around the world, Carey can be seen standing in for actor Larry Dean, who portrayed the titular robot, Major Fun-Fun, before calamity struck and Lucy Carmichael had to fill the gap! (Side note, this wasn’t Dean’s first appearance on The Lucy Show as a robotic character. He appeared in the previous season as a “Mechanical Butler” in Lucy and the Ceramic Cat). Lucy helps Jerry with his cub scout nature craft project on bugs and accidentally lets loose his prized find: a royal white butterfly. Lucy assures her son she will get him the butterfly and that results in chaos during a dinner at her conservative beau’s boss’ home and running through town with a butterfly net while in her bathrobe. Lucy’s series often incorporated the names of people associated with the show and this was a frequent occurrence throughout the first season of The Lucy Show, particularly in this episode. Lucy’s new boyfriend, played by Philip Carey, is Howard McClay, named after Desilu’s publicity director. McClay is a lawyer at the firm Donahue, Pomerantz and Lombardi. Carl Benton Reid portrayed Jack Donahue, named for the series director, while Charlie Pomerantz was Lucy’s publicist and Joe Lombardi was in charge of special effects for the show. “Lucy and the Runaway Butterfly” featured Lucy’s best pal Mary Wickes in her first Lucy Show appearance. Her character was named Mrs. Wickenhauser, which was Mary’s actual last name at birth. Mary last appeared in the classic I Love Lucy “The Ballet” in 1952. After they cannot answer Jerry and Sherman’s questions, Lucy and Viv decide to take an adult education class in chemistry. Lucy makes it her project to discover the secret of eternal youth and gets so carried away that Viv teaches her a lesson. Karen Norris, in the first of several Lucy Show appearances, plays chemistry student Della Fox. The character was named after Lucy’s long time costumer. In the opening scene, Lucy says to Viv, “Our idea of an intellectual conversation is to sit around and discuss whether Marshal Dillon will ever marry Kitty.” This is a reference to CBS’ Gunsmoke, which was then in its eighth season. Lillian Appleby was the name of Lucy’s favorite schoolteacher. The other clubwomen were also named after people from Lucy’s youth. 60 years ago today, The Lucy Show episode "Lucy and Viv are Volunteer Firemen'' aired. After rezoning leaves Danfield without a fire department, Lucy makes it her mission to rectify this situation. A volunteer fire department comprised of women is proposed and Lucy is made captain of the disorganized crew. This episode marks the first Lucy series appearance of Carole Cook, which coincidentally aired on her 39th birthday. Here Carole plays Thelma Green, one of the ladies in the volunteer fire department. She will continue to portray that role throughout the first two seasons of The Lucy Show as well as play many other characters during the run of the program. In her very first appearance, she makes the most spectacular of entrances. Carole gets a spotlight physical comedy moment -- sliding down a fire pole. Originally Lucy was supposed to do this and Lucy later always referred to this as the one stunt she refused to do. Lucy said she quickly slid down the pole once in rehearsal and she landed hard on the ground. She decided she would not attempt it again. In addition to the terrifying height, Lucy was afraid of getting injured and having that affect the show and her employees' livelihoods. Carole got to do the stunt instead. In addition, Carole also appeared with Viv in the concluding Jell-O commercial. Starting with this episode, the living room set is reconfigured. The closet is now expanded outwards, which eliminates the side wall with the built-in bookshelf. This show features several physical comedy bits involving the closet. In the opening moments of this show, Lucy is seen typing a letter to Senator John R. Dodds. 70 years ago today, the I Love Lucy episode “Ricky Loses His Voice” aired. Just before opening night at the Tropicana, which is under new ownership, Ricky is stricken with a virus and stuck in bed, unable to talk. Lucy takes over and, with the help of the Mertzes, stages a Roaring ‘20s revue, The Flapper Follies, at the nightclub. In this episode, Lucy receives the furniture she won from the home show in the previous installment. This couch and coffee table does not even last to the end of the season before Lucy tires of it. The Tropicana set is also completely refurbished with this episode. Fred says that Flapper Follies of 1927 was a smash when he and Ethel played it at The Palace… “the best theater in Jamestown, New York.” Lucy makes no reference to having been born there. In real life, Lucy did appear onstage at the Jamestown Palace (now the Reg Lenna Civic Center). In the show, Fred and Ethel sing “Carolina in the Morning,” a standard from Bill Frawley’s Vaudeville act. Lucy’s stand-in Hazel Pierce (a former eccentric dancer in Vaudeville), Barbara Pepper (Lucy’s pal from the Goldwyn Girls), Helen Dickson, and Gertrude Astor played the showgirls from the 25-year-old revue. Astor would have been 40 in 1927, while Pepper only 12. Ethel compares a sick Fred to “Baby Snooks,” the legendary Fanny Brice character. Jess Oppenheimer had been head writer for the Baby Snooks radio program before starting his long stint with Lucy. In the weeks following this episode, five “flashback”episodes were filmed to be saved for after Lucy gave birth before starting work on the pregnancy story arc. When “Ricky Loses His Voice” aired on December 1, 1952, Lucy and Desi were on holiday in Palm Springs. They watched the episode from the lobby of the Thunderbird Country Club with their mothers, baby Lucie, and Lucie’s nanny, Willie Mae.

“Breaking the Lease” which premiered 70 years ago today, was one of three I Love Lucy episodes that were combined to make a feature for theaters. There was one issue that came up in the planning stages for this film. Since I Love Lucy was filmed in front of a live studio audience, their laughter would be heard on the soundtrack. It was decided to make the movie be a look at the filming of an I Love Lucy show, which would explain the audible laughs. Included would be the Desilu crew doing their necessary duties and the audience members excitedly filing into the studio. Ann Doran and Benny Baker were cast as a couple attending the filming. The audience shots filmed with Doran and Baker also featured Barbara Pepper, Lucy's close friend for almost 20 years, and Hazel Pierce, Lucy's stand-in, among the crowd. Desi's stand-in, Bennett Green, was also seen as a boom operator hard at work. However, all three of these actors were a part of the show they were supposed to be watching! Hazel, Bennett, and Barbara all appeared as attendees of Ricky's late night jam session in "Breaking the Lease." They also could all be spotted at the Tropicana in the following episode, "The Ballet," which was the third segment in the feature film. Barbara and Bennett were among the patrons dancing and Hazel was in the background seated behind Ethel. This theatrical version of I Love Lucy was never released so as to not compete with the Arnazes’ MGM film The Long, Long Trailer. After being lost for nearly 50 years, the film is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray. 70 years ago today, the I Love Lucy episode “Breaking the Lease" aired. After a fun night singing tunes around the piano with the Ricardos, the Mertzes’ jolly mood dissipates once they return home and hear all the noise coming from upstairs. An argument breaks out between the two couples with the Ricardos announcing they are moving out. First, they must break their lease. This episode had life beyond the medium of television. 15 days after it aired on TV, radio listeners could have heard “Breaking the Lease” on CBS Radio. This was a test to rebroadcast I Love Lucy on radio. Sponsored by Phillip Morris, Desi provided some narration in character as Ricky. This audio only version trimmed some of the more visual humor like Lucy slamming the door in Ethel’s face. It did, however, feature an expanded version of Ricky’s “El Cumbanchero.” This was the only I Love Lucy episode ever broadcast on radio. Part of Lucy and Fred’s delightful dance to “Sweet Sue” was cut in this compilation. Ultimately, this big screen adaptation was never released. The battle over the temperature of the bedroom was right out of the Arnazes’ real life. Like Ricky, Desi liked the room warm while Lucy preferred it cool. Barbara Pepper, Lucy’s friend since they met as Goldwyn Girls on their way to Hollywood in 1933, makes the first of her many appearances in this episode. HAVE WARDROBE, WILL TRAVEL – In the lead-up to the Holiday Season last year, we took a look at some of the on-screen appearances Lucille Ball’s long-time stand-in, Hazel Pierce, on I Love Lucy, The Lucy Show, and Here’s Lucy. But the “Lucy” shows weren’t the only places that Hazel stepped in front of the camera as a supporting character or background player; she made frequent appearances on programs filmed at or produced by Desilu. We catalogued a number of instances were Lucille Ball leant Hazel Pierce some familiar pieces of I Love Lucy wardrobe designed by Elois Jenssen for many of Pierce’s background appearances on the Betty White-starring sitcom “Date with the Angels”, including this lace number. But, as it turns out, “Angels” wasn’t the only occasion for which Pierce borrowed this iconic lace number. Happy heavenly birthday, Bennett Green, who was born on this day (October 13) in 1904. He was Desi Arnaz’s stand-in on “I Love Lucy.” What’s a stand-in, you ask? Well, if the director, cinematographer, producers, or film crew need an actor for lighting or blocking purposes in between filming scenes and the actor is busy in hair & makeup (or whatever), the stand-in will be a substitute and stand wherever the crew needs them. Bennett was Desi’s stand-in, and he’s often featured in the background of a scene—along with Lucy’s stand-in, Hazel Pierce. .
