Today for #womencrushwednesday we continue our look at frequent “Lucy” background character Joan Carey. Carey is one of the very few people outside of core cast members to make appearances on I Love Lucy, The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour, The Lucy Show, and Here’s Lucy. Carey was born Joan Somerville Norbury on February 18, 1921 in Yorkshire, UK. Following her marriage to Halton A. Carey, with whom she had a son, Dennis, she carved out a brief career as an actress and dancer, including an appearance in The Harvey Girls, before finding an unusual niche as a studio stand-in, often on the Desilu lot. Joan Carey worked as a stand-in for Lucille Ball and others on the “Lucy” series, including for Ball on I Love Lucy, The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour, The Lucy Show, and Here’s Lucy – and even served as a Rudy Vallee’s stand-in in Lucy Takes a Cruise to Havana. In this regard, she was somewhat unique as a female stand-in occasionally filling in for the guys – and was hired by Bob Sweeney as his stand-in on the short-lived sitcom, The Brothers, which starred our own Gale Gordon. Other shows on which Carey stood in for the leads and guest performers were Our Miss Brooks, The Eve Arden Show, Taxi, and Cheers. While we’re unsure of her roles behind the scenes over at MTM Enterprises, Carey can also be seen in several episodes of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and even had a brief speaking role on Phyllis. So far, the latest we’ve spotted Carey on screen is as a bar patron in multiple episodes of final season of Cheers in 1993. Following the death of her second husband, TV cameraman Vaughn Wilkins, in 2007, she is reported to have died in 2015, but an obituary is still at large. BECKY MAHEATA TAHAURI MOON - Lead Vocals/Percussion She received her performance training growing up in Chicago and working for Polynesian Dance troupes since the age of 5 performing throughout the US and then as a full-time dancer for SeaWorld Polynesian Village. As an adult, she became lead singer for Crash Dance traveling worldwide including playing for the troops in military tours to Kosovo, Irag and Afghanistan for 9 years. Becky's voice is known for her range and extreme versatility with an ability to sing ACDC to Whitney Houston. She has been backup vocalist for many well-known gospel and soul artists, and records with and fronts many world class artists and LA bands. This #womancrushwednesday, we highlight Henrietta Lacks. Henrietta Lacks was born Loretta Pleasant on August 1, 1920, in Roanoke, Virginia. At some point, she changed her name to Henrietta. After her mother died in 1924, Henrietta was sent to live with her grandfather, who was also looking after another grandchild, Henrietta’s cousin David “Day” Lacks. Henrietta and Day were married on April 10, 1941. Henrietta and David moved to Maryland at the urging of another cousin, Fred Garret. There, they had three more children: David Jr., Deborah, and Joe. They placed their daughter Elsie, who was developmentally disabled, in the Hospital for the Negro Insane. On February 1, 1951, Lacks went to Johns Hopkins Hospital after experiencing abnormal pain and bleeding in her abdomen. Physician Howard Jones quickly diagnosed her with cervical cancer. During her subsequent radiation treatments, doctors removed two cervical samples from Lacks without her knowledge. She continued to experience severe pain and returned to the hospital on August 8, remaining there until her death weeks later. She died at Johns Hopkins on October 4, 1951, at the age of 31. A partial autopsy revealed the cancer had metastasized throughout her body. The cells from Lacks’ tumor made their way to the laboratory of researcher Dr. George Otto Gey. Gey noticed an unusual quality in the cells. Unlike most cells, which survived only a few days, Lacks’ cells were far more durable. Gey isolated and multiplied a specific cell, creating a cell line. He dubbed the resulting sample HeLa, derived from the name Henrietta Lacks. The HeLa strain revolutionized medical research. Jonas Salk used the HeLa strain to develop the polio vaccine, sparking mass interest in the cells. As demand grew, scientists cloned the cells in 1955. Since that time, over 10,000 patents involving HeLa cells have been registered. Researchers have used the cells to study disease and to test human sensitivity to new products and substances. More recently, the cells enabled the development of COVID-19 vaccines. #WCW #WomenCrushWednesday
