This book made me lose sleep and now I cannot rest until December 26, 2023 ☹️ Divine Rivals has been steadily blowing up across all platforms, and after lots of campaigning on catherineannechiang’s part I decided to give this ~cozy romance a shot. What I didn’t expect was a STRAIGHT SHOT TO MY HEART. I was so wrong, y’all LOL. What begins as a cute, lyrical You’ve Got Mail-esque rivals to lovers vibe quickly reveals itself to be a story about a WAR between gods, the rippling effects it has in everyday peoples’ lives, and the necessity for hope amidst it all. Rebecca Ross powerfully depicts the willful ignorance of those far from the frontlines, especially in conjunction with Iris’s own character arc starting first with the Gazette before her decision to become a war correspondent. This all hangs in balance with Roman and Iris’s sweet, innocent love story, which refuses to be anything but pure and magical amidst violence and destruction until the very end. I found myself getting really emotional multiple times towards the last half of the book despite a bit of a lull in the second quarter. The story steadily builds and it’s a testament to Rebecca Ross’s writing that, by the time our characters are in the midst of battle and gore, we are equally shocked and filled with pure dread. Divine Rivals lives up to (and deserves) all the hype it is getting. I also officially think Cat picks all the best YA books that will destroy you. Haha. Except I’m not joking. I am warning you now! A trip to the magical land of the North may seem like the start of a happily ever after...until it quickly becomes a twisted nightmare. Had my hopes up beginning this one, as I love Jacks. He's one of the greatest villains I've come across in my reading (so far), so I'm happy he gets to be a star in this trilogy. However, I didn't find OUABH to be as enchanting as Caraval. It's the same world, but doesn't have the same touch. Needless to say, I'm a bit disappointed. I'll probably pick up the next book and hope it's better. 📚 Book Review 📚 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Elsewhere was my first Gabrielle Zevin book. I have Tomorrow Tomorrow Tomorrow sitting in my TBR, but picked this one up first because it was shorter and I needed something not too heavy. Heavy is an understatement. I knew this was YA, so I'm not going to talk about the way Elsewhere was written. Absolutely aimed at young readers, it is simple, succinct and easy to read. Not my style, but it's YA, and I don't have the experience of the genre to comment on it. Elsewhere dealt with incredibly difficult issues that even adults have a hard time managing - death, grief and loss. It's sad, but there are bits of humour thrown in, and it's an overall beautiful ending to what is a serious plot. Elsewhere is where 15yo Liz Hall ends up after she dies, a place like Earth but different. In Elsewhere, everyone ages backwards from the day of their death until they become a baby again and return to Earth. BOOK REVIEW 📘 Powerless 🖊️: Lauren Roberts ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Oh boy. This book had me hooked from about chapter 6 to the very end. The beginning is a bit slow, but, that’s usually my issue with every book I read 😂 it’s a ‘me’ thing. After reading this book, I am not okay. This is another book with trials, my favorite, so I knew going into it that I had these expectations of bloody battles and mind games and this book did not disappoint. Payden is full of fire and the Kai is our morally conflicted shadow prince and death deliverer with hidden morals which makes them the perfect pair, but each have secrets that threaten their reputation and relationships. I loved their banter and the painstakingly slow burn in this book. It was painful at times…in a good way. The book was perfectly timed, the trials were exciting and nostalgic (hunger games-esque), and the character builds were top notch. HOWEVER, the ending of the book and that solid cliff hanger had me immediately calling my book bestie to complain. It was absolutely brutal! okay. so. i read this book at the very beginning of april, and i've been wanting to make a post about it since i finished it. but. it took me like way too long to annotate it, but that's besides the point. this. freaking. book. no words. okay, one, it was so good and reminded me of like the hunger games type stuff, and oh my gosh the romance. i've included a couple scenes but because instagram only allows ten pictures per post, i can hardly capture the magnificence of every word. it wad wonderfully written by @laurenrobertslibrary and i finished it in about a day—and the end left me sobbing and pleading for more (the sequel comes out this summer) overall this book was a ten out of ten (not even to mention the emotional rollercoaster it took me on) but it's bound to have you hooked. there was a little cussing, but nothing extremely graphic. no smut whatsoever, and as long as you're okay with a little gore, i'd say this book would be suitable for ages 12-13 and above. I’ve seen a lot of books with spice, and many of them claim to be YA. But let me tell you something. I never liked reading spice as a kid. Crushes? Sure. Romance is romance. Looking for Smoke by K. A. Cobell 🪶 ✨ Q: What book are you reading right now? Are you enjoying it? My rating: 4.5/5 ⭐️ Looking for Smoke was quite an enjoyable book. It’s a YA thriller/murder mystery about indigenous friends part of the Blackfeet tribe. One girl goes missing and the other is murdered, and there is no trace of who did it. So the teens end up looking for clues themselves, but get caught up in the mess themselves. As I read through the book, I couldn’t help but want to know more. The murderer literally could have been anyone, and I wouldn’t have been surprised. Of course I had my favorites though, and I really hoped it wouldn’t be them. The characters were relatable. I especially liked Eli First Kill and Mara Racette. This was also an interesting read for the reason that the story had some information in it that I didn’t know anything about. The author talked about the cases of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women movement, and how they don’t get justice they deserve. This was the second thriller I’ve ever read, and I’m starting to wonder if I should read more now. Overall, the story was really great and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. There was this one part where I was sitting next to my husband reading and I gripped onto his arm without even knowing. 😭 The intensity was real. P.S. swipe for the final cover. The Summer of Broken Rules Book Review: (non-spoiler) Rating: ⭐️⭐️2/5 (first *soft* DNF) Reason: It is very cheesy, cheesier than I expected. I did not expect it to be about teenage love. I guess I should’ve done my research more because it’s not for me (bought it mainly because the cover is really cute, and the book itself is just good quality). Final thoughts: If you enjoyed The Hunger Games but want more fantasy, I recommend this book for you! The main character has her strengths and her flaws, and her along with the rest of the characters, felt real to me. Most tropes were done well, and her writing is very easy to digest for a fantasy novel. The pacing was also very good, with one of the best plot twists I've read in a while! 🎵🎶🇰🇷 Book Review 🇰🇷🎶🎵 XOXO by Axie Oh This was a cute book and definitely had the K-drama vibes I’ve heard everyone use to describe it. I love YA, but I think this one would be best suited for 13-16 year olds, rather than adults who like YA. I found the characters likable, but I would have liked to have seen more of Jenny’s relationship with her mom, as well as the relationship between Jenny’s mom and grandma. While XOXO was cute enough, I was not its target demographic and did not enjoy it as much as, I believe, a young teen would. You can find it on KU if you have it! Synopsis: After Jenny’s grandma becomes sick and needs someone to care for her, she and her mother move to Seoul, South Korea to be with her. Jenny is accepted to the prestigious Seoul Arts Academy as a cellist, living on campus and visiting her grandmother on the weekends. Jenny is surprised to find that Jaewoo, a mysterious boy she met before moving, attends the school and is a member of an up and coming k-pop group called XOXO. Hi everyone! Sorry I have been mostly MIA these past few months. I have been dealing with some medical issues and stress but am feeling a lot better now. I still need to get blood test but overall doing better! Today was my last day of the semester so starting next week I will be writing and writing and writing some more! The plan is to finish up Rebellion (City of Kaus book 5) which will be the last book of the series! I also will be having a kickstarter for a new series based on Norse Mythology, so stay tuned for that! The plan is for the Kickstarter to be live in July and Rebellion to be out in November. Besides finishing up these two stories, I am also planning on bringing back my blog about mythology. I've learned a lot this past year and want to share some of that knowledge with you! I also will be reading more and reviewing books on my blog as well! Some other exciting news, I changed my major to Art (Painting and Drawing) with a minor in Classics! I have always wanted to improve my art and make my own book art and comics for you all, so I am very excited about this change. I have a bunch of ideas and can't wait to see them come to fruition. History lesson: I met @lindsayfisherbandy in a critique group formed because we shared our first agent, fast forward a couple of years and she introduced me to who is now both our second agent, fast forward to NOW and that little book we traded chapters with way back when is now being published! I’ve been reading drafts of this book before any of my published books were so much as a twinkle in my eye, so I was so excited to get an advanced copy of INEVITABLE FATE!! Honestly it was so cool to get to read it and remember different past versions and see where Lindsay had experimented with things and then come into this final version with them stronger than ever. Now that I mention it, thinking about all its past lives is kind of appropriate for the book too… 👀 One thing that’s always blown me away about Lindsay’s writing is her ability to weave historical details into a narrative. This book is set in the modern day (mostly), but the peeks into Evan’s past lives feel so detailed and lived in, and I love how they tie into and expound on historical fact. I remember casually deciding to google something about the 1911 Dreamland fire and just going wait that was REAL? probably about half a dozen times. The way it all fits in makes Kieran and Mary’s story feel like a forgotten bit of history we’re uncovering alongside Evan. This book is about fate and cycles and breaking free of them. No spoilers, but I love how even when it’s being dictated by godly forces, fate is just the path other people are determined to keep you on, and it can be broken free of. Watching the same cycles and patterns echo through Evan and Mara’s past lives make it so much better when you get to watch them break free of it and create their own future. (AND just saying there’s an Amanda from Tampa briefly mentioned…so if you squint you could almost say I’m in this book not to brag) Also, the interior design is so cute!! “The Darkness Rises” by Stacy Stokes ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book follows Whitney, a high schooler who has a secret: she can see death. When a dark cloud appears over someone, Whitney knows they’re marked to die. The darker and larger the cloud, the more immediate the threat. Despite her grandma’s warnings about interfering, Whitney can’t resist saving people when she can. Until one day, a person she saves goes on to commit a school shooting. Whitney blames herself and resolves not to tell anyone about her role in the tragedy. But as the anniversary of the event approaches, she starts getting mysterious notes blackmailing her: tell the truth about her involvement, or her family and friends die. This was a fun and fast-paced thriller with some good red herrings and a satisfying reveal—I did guess who was behind everything, but not the full motivation, so the AHA moment still got me. I liked Whitney but she suffers from the same issues a lot of YA thriller characters do: some extremely questionable decisions worthy of me texting my mother about to complain. I think that’s a pitfall of the genre, though, and teenagers can be dumb, so. There were a couple of lines that took me out of the story with how awkwardly hard they were trying to sound Gen Z (ex. “I hope when I’m married my husband stans me like that.”) but for the most part I enjoyed the writing. I’m not usually a huge supernatural powers fan, but I really liked Whitney’s. It was unique enough that I wanted to learn more about it, but it wasn’t so strong of an ability that it made the plot ridiculous. Nothing more awkward than wondering why someone doesn’t just fix a problem with their easily accessible magic. The moral questions and implications of her ability and fate were really interesting, and made for a story that was both compelling and also full of depth and nuance. If Whitney’s not-fully-formed brain hadn’t made me facepalm several times this concept could have been 5 stars for me, but overall I had a good time anyway! Love Hypothesis (Thank you @kaleys_kindle for gifting it to me 😘) is next up on my list and if I love that like I think I’m going to, Ali is probably going to be an auto buy for me. I have watched shows and movies about competitive chess and liked them but reading this book was so fun for me. I was so entertained the entire time. This book I think is great for the non spice babes. Gets you that tension without getting too down and dirty with it. I loved how this book touched on how complex relationships are and how it’s hard to not only form healthy relationships when you’ve experienced something traumatic but maintain them. I think everyone can relate to Mallory in some way or another and while there were spots she drove me crazy I felt like she was real in a way that she wasn’t perfect and didn’t deal with certain situations perfectly but realistically. Nolan was that white whale, if you can find a man like him freaking hold on with both hands and do not let go. His patience and understanding with Mallory was just unmatched. 10/10 I would highly recommend this one. It’s a slow burn and just a super cute fun read! Chiamaka, Devon, Aces, and Niveus Private Academy may forever live in my brain. I don’t even know how best to describe my love for this book without spoiling the hell out of it. VERY short description: Chiamaka and Devon are selected to be prefects at their preppy private school. Out of nowhere, “Aces,” an anonymous cyber bully a la Gossip Girl or A from Pretty Little Liars, begins spilling secrets of theirs and it turns their lives upside down. Kids won’t be kids (a gross response to bullying amirite?) though, because Aces gets very serious, very quickly. Dangerous, even. ♠️ I told yall I am in my YA era right now. I’m 30 and thriving on these teen “dramas.” But I’ll tell you this right now: Ace of Spades is unlike any teen drama I’ve ever watched or YA thriller I’ve ever read. I read this before Where Sleeping Girls Lie but posted that review before this one because I was still trying to find my words. Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé is now an automatic-read author for me. Her ability to handle extremely sensitive and important topics through the lens of young adults is superb and it leaves the reader wanting more, more, more… and then some. I couldn’t put this book down. This book deals with racial profiling, racism/systemic racism, and homophobia. I would recommend this book to any thriller-lover but would advise friends of color to hold space for themselves for any activating scenes or tropes. 5 ♠️⭐️, easy.
