• MEET THE TEAM • 👾 Emma Houston - (@shortbreadthebreaker) playing Scorch 👾 Emma Houston, aka ‘Shortbread’, is a movement artist working across theatre, commercial, competitive and underground dance scenes. Specialising in Breaking, Shortbread is an Elite Squad member of Breaking GB & last year's finalist at Red Bull BC One UK Cypher. Starting their dance journey with Hip Hop styles, Emma went on to train in Contemporary Dance Theatre in London, where they are now based. A sought-after artist, Emma has performed & dance captained with ZooNation (Message In A Bottle) and Olivier Award-winning UK Hip Hop Theatre companies Boy Blue (REDD) and Far From the Norm (Union Black) among others. • MEET THE TEAM • 👾 Jane Sekonya - John - Principal role - playing Mum 👾 Born and Bred in Katlehong, Johannesburg, Jane’s first dance was traditional Sotho and Pedi, followed closely by renditions of early street dance, Hip Hop and Pantsula with her local township crew Bixties Body Rock Club. Jane studied classical ballet and contemporary dance at the conservatoires Johannesburg Dance foundation and Ballet Rambert in London. She was an original member of the London cast of Disney’s The Lion King, has toured extensively with Jonzi D’s Aeroplane Man, and traditional South African dance and music group Shikisha. Jane is among a rare breed of performing artists. She fuses popular cultures, by experimenting with the variables of dance in the genres of Ballet, Contemporary, Kwaito (house dance), Gumboot Dance, Krumpin’, Traditional African, Hip Hop/ Street Funk and Afro-Caribbean Dance styles, to bring her unique craft to the cutting edge of audience, dancers and dance theatres around the world. The unparalleled ability of ‘subtle exploding dynamite’ is descriptive of Jane’s “AFROFUZE”. As a result of her extensive dance knowledge, Jane delivers a variety of educational programmes designed for beginners as well as for experienced performers. Teaching aspects of choreography and stagecraft to further the development of their artistic vocabulary and technical skills. Jane is one of the mentors for BreakinConvention’s Open Art Surgery and Back to the Lab artists development programmes. Immersed in mime, physical theatre, and clowning, he honed his skills through dedicated training and innate creativity. The vibrant underground club scene of the 80s and 90s became his classroom, where he mastered the art of dance amidst the city's pulsating rhythm. Sean has worked with and toured with artists like George Michael and participated in groundbreaking productions such as STOMP and Punchdrunk. Hip-hop theatre made Sean find his true calling, infusing his performances with the spirit of his upbringing. 'B-boy 4 life' as he likes to say. Beyond the applause, he found profound lessons in the challenges of raising a teenager, enriching his understanding of life's complexities. • MEET THE TEAM • 👾 Ola Papior ( @olapapior ) - Choreographer, Dance Capitan, Rehearsal Director 👾 Ola’s dance journey commenced at the age of 8 in Poland, sparked by a fascination with music videos on MTV. This early passion turned into a career which inspired her to move to London in 2013. Since then, Ola has carved out a stellar career as a dancer, gracing stages alongside global icons like Rihanna, Alexandra Burke, and Olly Murs and captivating audiences on popular TV shows such as X Factor, Brit Awards and Netflix show - Dance 100. She also performed on the hip-hop theatre stages with productions called The Tide (Talawa production) and 1st London showing of Fray (CandyBomber production) in 2013. Ola’s artistry extends beyond performance; She has taught in over 20 countries, guiding aspiring dancers to new heights in their training and careers. Ola’s style is deeply rooted in Street Dance, underpinned by a keen sense of musicality, meticulous attention to detail, and infectious groove. With over two decades of experience, she now embarks on a new chapter as a choreographer, armed with a wealth of knowledge and skills honed over years of practice. In 2024, Ola launched We Grow 360 - a platform dedicated to empowering freelance dance artists to build sustainable and fulfilling careers. • MEET THE TEAM • 👾 Jonzi D ( @jonzid ) - Artistic Director 👾 An MC, dancer, spoken word artist and director, he is the foremost advocate for hip hop who has changed the profile and influenced the development of the UK British hip hop dance and theatre scene over the last two decades. Since founding Breakin’ Convention in 2004 Jonzi has triumphed in raising the profile and giving a platform to hip hop disciplines, which has gained worldwide recognition as being at the vanguard of the development of the art form. Through professional development projects Open Art Surgery and Back to the Lab, Jonzi has supported hundreds of hip hop dance and rap/poetry artists on their journey to creating theatre. His critically acclaimed works include 1995‘s Lyrikal Fearta, 1999’s Aeroplane Man, 2006’s TAG… Just Writing My Name, 2009’s Markus the Sadist and 2013’s The Letter: To Be Or To MBE? about his choice to decline an MBE from the Queen. Jonzi’s has been featured in HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, had his short films Silence da Bitchin’ & Aeroplane Man screened on Channel 4, toured his work extensively all over the world and delivered his own TED Talk about the influence and evolution of hip hop culture. In 2023, Jonzi D was awarded a citation from Al Taylor of the 71st District - New York State Assembly in recognition of his efforts for advancing and advocating hip hop culture in the UK and abroad, and the De Valois Award for Lifetime Achievement by the Dancing Times Critic’s Circle.
