In November after extensive DNA testing we learnt our origins came from an inspiring man- our great grandfather(x5) who arrived in England a slave and over time became one of the signatories in the group of Black African men called ‘ The sons of Africa”, who with scholars from England were the driving abolitionists of slaves from Africa to Freetown, Sierra Leone. So proud of my Great grandfather and the journey my forbearers made to Australia. Yesterday my daughter Maya and I walked on the stones of the church where he and my Grandmother married. I sat on the stone and marked the moment. Coming to terms with the past, with what has happened that shaped our lives, is in many ways the retelling of a story in a way that makes meaning out of the unknown. We are so excited to host another new resident next week! Social Studies will be welcoming @jellicore tomorrow and we can't wait to see what gets made. Anjelica Colliard is an artist based in Oakland, California, with a BFA from the University of California, Berkeley, concentrating in printmaking. She writes that "recently I have been focusing on medium and large-scale mixed media drawings that feature fantastical botanical motifs and stylized characters. True to my fascination with larger-than-life drawings, I have also created murals, and made work for clients such as Airbnb, Google and Target for their 2023 pride campaign. Plants and our natural world are one of my biggest inspirations and sources for grounding my creativity; I find in them endless wisdom, care, gentleness and strength. I enjoy creating plant-filled fantasy worlds where my characters can live peacefully, and want my images to encourage people to value their sense of wonder and the power behind it as a means for finding hope within our often overwhelming world." The weather here in Longyearbyen turned recently with storm warnings and warmer temperatures so we now have slush everywhere. In just a few days a lot of the snow melted and the mountains are showing a lot of brown soil and rock now. A good opportunity to do things around town, look for snow and ice formations and bake some cinnamon rolls. We also spotted some reindeer and watched them for some time. They come down into the town and aren't worried about human presence at all. Day Five of my research residency at U of T! Today I got an introduction to the letterpress studio at U of T. It’s such a cozy and inspiring space and I can wait to do some printing there next week. I even ordered myself some special paper! 😍 The rest of the afternoon I prepped paper for printing next week and then I headed out to do some gallery hopping around Knoxville. First I attended the 2024 U of T Capstone exhibition which features graduating fourth year BFAs, then I made my way to check out a group show of works from the painting faculty, and then ended at Gallery 1010 to check out some graduate work. Of course the evening wouldn’t be complete without going out for drinks with the grads and getting the hot goss. Today, I took some time out of my day to explore the work of Andre Azevedo, this amazing Brazilian artist (from Curitiba) who came to Miami for an artistic residency promoted by @the55project Art Foundation. André Azevedo’s research with fabrics is deeply rooted in his personal experience. He believes that fabric serves as a medium because it exists “in between” - between humans and the world, and between the world and everything it envelops.
