BIFMO is preoccupied with R&R at the moment and would like to present another bed, this time at Castle Howard. ✨ It has a two-tiered cornice of satinwood decorated with marquetry, each tier surmounted by a carved and gilt cresting with a crowning finial in the form of a basket. The entire suite was commissioned by the 5th Earl of Carlisle in the late 1770s from the Georgian cabinet maker, John Linnell. Eight accompanying shieldback elbow chairs have painted decoration in green consisting of feathers, leaves and rinceaux. But the standout piece is a splendid satinwood breakfront clothes press decorated with four oval sycamore marquetry panels, each containing a figure of a nymph on a ground of stained sycamore. This exquisite rustic brocatelle woven on a cotton warp with a silk ground and viscose/flax figure has been recently been redrawn and woven as a 17th century Damask for the Larvik Museum in Norway. The Somerton Damask is dated as first woven in the 2nd quarter of the 17th Century. The fabric is to be used for the restoration of a bed in Vestfold Museum. Rare mid 18thc English bedstead with original cornice; private collection. Original brass caps, castors, and rails. Remarkable condition; every effort was made to use non- intrusive techniques when attaching reproduction valances. New lath and compass rod under the cornice protected the original hanging hardware evidence.
