Haworth: One of the simplest inscriptions in the graveyard at the church is a large rectangular slab with “JS 1796” carved just into the top left corner. The information at the church indicates that this was likely the grave of a man called James Sutcliffe who was hung for theft on 2nd April 1796 for theft. #tapophile #grave #graves #graveyard #graveyards #church #churchyard #burialground #hangedman #georgianhistory #brontecountry #yorkshire #yorkshirehistory #unusualgraves #tyburntree

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️| A Palace Untold Lives At Work, @kensingtonpalace Please visit this exhibition it is one of the best I have ever seen and I know I will always think about it. Untold Lives highlights the lesser known people at kensington palace. It looks at servants, workers and enslaved people who were at Kensington. It touches upon different areas of history and brilliantly highlights minority history by looking and talking about black/POC, LGBTQ+, and disability history. They tackle these subjects in a way that I hope everybody is taking notes. There is a mix of portraits and objects as well as some people getting a more in-depth information and when reading about them you understood why. Another part I loved was that current workers at Kensington Palace also got black and white portraits throughout the exhibition showing the different jobs and roles go in the running heritage places. You need to see this exhibition, don’t question it just go! #history #exhibition #servants #palace #kensingtonpalace @historicroyalpalaces #historicroyalpalaces #london #mustvisit #thingstodo #recommendation #blackhistory #pochistory #lgbtqiahistory #disabilityhistory #womenshistory #georgianhistory #ukpalaces

A striking portrait of George III when Prince of Wales by Jean-Etienne Liotard, 1754. The prince's father, Frederick Prince of Wales, had died suddenly in 1751, aged only 44, leaving his shy eldest son as heir. Prince George would ascend to the throne in October 1760 after the death of his grandfather, George II. George III reigned for over 59 years, the longest reign of any British monarch until the 63- year reign of his granddaughter Victoria and the 70- year reign of his great-great-great-great granddaughter Elizabeth II. #historyinpictures #historylesson #historyfactsdaily #britishhistory #bridgerton #britishroyalty #britishmonarchy #georgianhistory #georgeiv #georgeiii #queencharlotte #queencharlotteabridgertonstory #18thcenturylife #18thcenturyfashion #18thcentury #allabout18thcentury #regencyfashion #regencyera #regencyromance #instahistory #americanhistory #instahistory #arthistory #fashionhistory #historylovers #royalhistory #royalfamily #eighteenthcentury

Happy #NationalTeaDay! It’s easy to take a nice cup of tea for granted; this affordable form of refreshment is enjoyed by many of us up and down the country on a daily basis, but it hasn’t always been case. In the 18th century, only the very wealthy could afford to indulge in this expensive consumable. The ritual of brewing and serving tea was a privileged pastime in the drawing rooms of the wealthy. Largely enjoyed by ladies, it was a chance for social interaction with the added opportunity to catch up with all the gossip of the day. The lady of the house would brew the tea using a kettle and teapot, serving the hot beverage in tiny porcelain tea bowls. Along with the lockable tea caddy, often made of elaborately decorated wood, all the elements of this process reflected status, and an ostentatious show of wealth. Servants would make a bit of extra money by drying out the tea leaves used by their employers and selling them on. If you bought cheap tea the leaves would have been used by several other people before you! Pictured here is a tea caddy c.1800, which is on display in our parlour. Note the beauty of the pattern made by combining multiple pieces of wood, and imagine the time and care that would have gone into creating it by hand - very appropriately for the precious commodity it held within. Over time tea became more affordable and tea drinking developed into the much-loved pastime that people from all walks of life enjoy today. @nationalteaday #tealovers #georgianhistory #museumgram

Have you heard of the family curse that affected the British monarchy in the Georgian era? When Queen Anne died in 1714, the throne passed to distant cousins from Hanover, in the Holy Roman Empire. The Hanoverian royals had a strange family curse: fathers and eldest sons seemed to hate each other!👑 The first king, George I, was envious of his eldest son's popularity in Britain. The Prince of Wales didn't help matters by associating with politicians who opposed the king's government. A quarrel at the baptism of the Prince of Wales's son in 1717 led to the Prince and Princess of Wales being banned from Court and losing custody of their children to the king. Things didn't improve in the next generation: the new George II hated his eldest son, Frederick, as much as his own father had hated him! Like his father, George II was suspicious of his son's popularity and limited the prince's financial allowance from Parliament. The king's wife, Queen Caroline, also despised her eldest son and once said that she wished the ground would swallow him where he stood. Prince Frederick didn't help matters by cosying up to opposition politicians and publicly denouncing his father. Prince Frederick died suddenly in 1751 and never became king. His eldest son became George III in 1761. George III tried to put an end to the family curse by taking a sincere interest in his eldest son's upbringing. But history repeated itself: the Prince of Wales aligned himself with the opposition and embarrassed his parents by taking mistresses and getting into serious debt. The Prince of Wales (later the Prince Regent, then George IV) had no sons, only a daughter, so the strange curse ended with him. Romances of the Prince Regent 💘Part Four 💘 In 1807, the Prince became infatuated with Isabella, Marchioness of Hertford. Like most of the prince's mistresses, she was older than him. In fact, the Prince was good friends with her son, Lord Yarmouth. 💘 Lady Hertford was the daughter of an earl and an heiress in her own right, but she married young at 16 to Francis, Lord Beauchamp, son of the Marquess of Hertford. 💘 Lady Hertford was reluctant to start an affair with the prince, but he was persistent, even claiming to be ill when they were apart. 💘 Lady Hertford was a supporter of the Tory political party and she was influential in turning the Prince to their side. Previously, the Prince had supported the Whigs, the rival party of the Tories. 💘 Like many women in the public eye, Lady Hertford was attacked in the press for having too much influence over the Prince, especially after he became Regent in 1811. 💘 The affair ended in 1819 when the Prince became besotted with another woman, Lady Conyngham. #historygram #historygeek #historylesson #historian #historymatters #bridgerton #booklover #britishhistory #britishroyalty #britishmonarchy #britishroyalfamily #royalhistory #romantasybooks #regencyfashion #regencyera #queencharlotte #queencharlotteabridgertonstory #18thcenturystyle #18thcenturyfashion #18thcentury #18thcenturydress #18thcenturyart #outlander #womenshistory #georgianhistory #georgeiv #georgianera #instahistory #eighteenthcentury #allabout18thcentury

Before #princessdiana there was Princess Charlotte of Wales. 👑 Princess Charlotte was the only child of the Prince Regent and his wife, Princess Caroline. Charlotte was born in 1796 and was the first legitimate grandchild of George III and Queen Charlotte. 👑 When Princess Charlotte's parents separated after her birth, it became clear that she would inherit the throne after her grandfather and father. 👑 While she was growing up, Charlotte became a pawn in her parent's battles against each other. This led to the young princess distrusting the people around her, including her own family. 👑 Charlotte was the darling of the British press and public, who saw her as a symbol of Britain's bright future. 👑 In 1816, Charlotte married Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld whom she had chosen herself after turning down other more prestigious offers. The couple were very happy together. 👑 On 6 November 1817, Charlotte died in childbirth aged 21. The whole nation went into mourning on a scale never seen before. One contemporary remarked: "It really was as though every household throughout Great Britain had lost a favourite child." 👑 Charlotte's death prompted the Succession Crisis, where several of her uncles put aside their mistresses and married in hopes of producing an heir to the throne. Her uncle Edward was successful, with his daughter Victoria becoming queen in 1837. 👑 Did you know about the tragedy of Princess Charlotte? #regencyera #queencharlotte #bridgerton #britishhistory #britishroyalty #bridgertonnetflix #royalhistory #romantasybooks #18thcenturylife #18thcentury #georgianhistory #historyinpictures #historylovers #historygram #womenshistory #britishroyalfamily #queencharlotteabridgertonstory #georgeiii #instahistory #allabout18thcentury #arthistory #tudors #regencyromance #regencyhistory #fashionhistory #18thcenturyfashion #queenvictoria

#Georgianheroes - ILIA CHAVCHAVADZE (1837-1907) regarded as the "Father of the Nation” was a journalist, publisher, writer and poet. Ilia completed his legal education at the St. Petersburg University Faculty of Law. He was the leader of the founders of the new movement called "Tergdaleulebi”. Ilia created a new literary style of Georgian language that was understandable to Georgians from all social classes and places. Using this new language, Ilia launched the newspaper ‘Iveria.’ Prior to that, he had founded the magazine ‘Georgian Moambe’. Iveria aimed to bring all Georgians together around a single, unifying concept: Georgia's future autonomy and ultimate independence. One of the Ilia’s most significant undertakings, achieved together with other progressive representatives of his rank, was the establishment of the National Bank. Ilia was the head of this bank for some time, and even spent several months in St. Petersburg studying banking. His stories, novels, poems, as well as his journalistic writings are still alive. If you wander along the very modern Abbeygate Street, you will reach an unassuming archway which will lead you from the modern day into the Georgian world of Abbey Green, a gorgeous oasis of calm that transports you back in time. The pedestrianised square is centred around a beautiful plane tree which was planted in 1793. Obviously when exploring a city, a good cake stop is a necessity and you are spoilt for choice here! 🍰 The Abbey Deli (which of course doubles up as the La Modiste shop front in Bridgerton). ☕️The Bath Bun - home to the famous Bath bun which is a sugary fruit bun. 🧁Sally Lunn’s tea shop - this is officially just around the corner. You can get a famous Sally Lunn bun here which is bigger than the Bath bun and more like a brioche. Which of these historic spots will you choose? 📍Abbey Green, Bath

The romances of the Prince Regent 💘 Part Three 💘 In 1793, the Prince began an affair with Frances Villiers, Countess of Jersey. Lady Jersey was a leading society lady who belonged to the same circle as Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire. 💘 Lady Jersey had relatively humble beginnings- her father was a Lord Bishop in the Church of Ireland and the son of a Baronet. When he died suddenly in 1752, rumours spread that he had been shot while robbing a stagecoach. 💘 In 1770, 17-year-old Frances married the Earl of Jersey, a man twice her age. The Earl served in the household of the king, bringing Lady Jersey into direct contact with the royal family. 💘 When Lady Jersey's affair with the Prince began in 1793, she was a 40-year-old mother of ten and a grandmother. Lady Jersey was also carrying on affairs with several aristocrats, including the Earl of Carlisle. 💘 When the Prince married his cousin Caroline in 1795, he appointed Lady Jersey as a Lady of the bedchamber in his wife's household. 💘 The press quickly discovered that Lady Jersey was running the princess's household and even opening her private letters. This sparked a press scandal which caused Lady Jersey's husband to write an open letter denying the royal affair. 💘 Despite the abuse from the press and the public, Lady Jersey remained the prince's chief mistress until 1807. Both she and the Prince were deeply unpopular, but the princess Caroline became a subject of sympathy as the wronged wife. #historyinpictures #historygram #regencyera #regencyromance #18thcenturyart #queencharlotte #bridgerton #britishhistory #britishroyalty #britishroyalfamily #royalhistory #georgianera #tudors #fashionhistory #romantasybooks #womenshistory

The Bagrationi Dynasty stands as one of the oldest and most illustrious royal families in the history of Georgia, a nation nestled in the Caucasus region at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. Spanning over a millennium, the Bagrationi Dynasty played a pivotal role in shaping Georgian history, culture, and identity. The dynasty traces its roots back to the 8th century, with its legendary progenitor, Ashot I, who rose to prominence as the Prince of Iberia (modern-day eastern Georgia). Under the reign of subsequent Bagrationi rulers, Georgia experienced periods of remarkable cultural and territorial expansion, solidifying its status as a major regional power. One of the most celebrated figures of the Bagrationi Dynasty is King David IV, also known as David the Builder, who ruled during the 11th and 12th centuries. David's visionary leadership and military prowess led to the Golden Age of Georgia, marked by territorial conquests, economic prosperity, and cultural flourishing. His reign saw the consolidation of Georgia's unity and the expansion of its borders to encompass large parts of the Caucasus and Anatolia. Throughout its history, the Bagrationi Dynasty weathered numerous challenges, including invasions by neighboring empires, internal conflicts, and periods of fragmentation. However, the dynasty endured, and its members continued to rule various regions of Georgia until the early 19th century. Despite the eventual annexation of Georgia by the Russian Empire in the early 19th century, the Bagrationi Dynasty retained its symbolic significance as a symbol of Georgian national identity and sovereignty. In the 20th and 21st centuries, members of the Bagrationi Dynasty have played active roles in Georgian society, politics, and culture, contributing to the preservation and promotion of Georgia's rich historical heritage. Today, the Bagrationi Dynasty holds a revered place in the hearts of the Georgian people, serving as a reminder of their nation's ancient lineage and enduring spirit. #talkdiplomacy #upsc #css #cuet #BagrationiDynasty #GeorgianHistory #RoyalHeritage #CulturalLegacy #Georgia #RoyalFamily #HistoricalDynasty #DavidTheBuilder #GoldenAge #georgian

The romances of the Prince Regent 💘 Part One 💘 The Prince Regent (later King George IV) had numerous affairs and relationships during his lifetime. 💘 The first public relationship took place in 1779, while he was Prince of Wales and just 17 years old. 💘 The Prince became infatuated with the beautiful and famous stage actress, Mary Robinson, and offered her £20,000 to become his mistress. 💘 Robinson was reluctant at first, fearing that the affair would ruin her flourishing acting career. Robinson's husband had been imprisoned for debt, so she was well-acquainted with poverty. 💘 Eventually, the romance soured and the Prince ended the relationship without paying the promised sum. Mary Robinson responded by threatening to sell his private, racy letters to the press. 💘 The prince's father, George III was forced to intervene and he agreed to pay Mary Robinson a lifetime annuity for the letters. 💘 In addition to being one of the first major celebrities of Georgian Britain, Mary Robinson went on to become a celebrated author, poet, and playwright. She wrote passionately about women's rights in her political treatise 'Thoughts on the Condition of Women, and in the Injustice of Mental Subordination', published in 1799. #regencyera #regencyromance #regencyhistory #historyinpictures #historylesson #historymatters #historygeek #historygram #historylovers #queencharlotteabridgertonstory #queencharlotte #bridgerton #britishhistory #britishroyalty #britishmonarchy #britishroyalfamily #royalhistory #royalhistorian #eighteenthcentury #georgianhistory #georgeiii #princeregent #georgeiv #womenshistory

Tamar’s next husband was of her own choosing. David Soslan was an able commander. He became Tamar’s most trusted and ardent supporter. With David as the leader of her armies, Tamar sought to expand the Georgian Empire further than ever before. Two of the most significant battles of Tamar’s reign were at Shamkori (1195) and Basiani (1202). Using the decline of the hostile Seljuq Turks, Tamar adopted an energetic foreign policy, the majority of which relied on the powerful military elite. Building upon the successes of her predecessors, Tamar consolidated an empire that dominated the Caucasus. She also played a crucial role in the formation of the Empire of Trebizond, which was made up of the northeastern corner of Anatolia and southern Crimea. Even Ivan the Terrible of Russia acknowledged Tamar’s intelligence and bravery. He described her as “the most wise Queen of Iberia, endowed with the intelligence and courage of a man”. It was during Tamar’s rule that Georgian architecture underwent a significant change, this can be seen in the many large-scale domed cathedrals that were built during her reign. In art and architecture, the Byzantine-inspired presentation of royal power saw several modifications due to Tamar’s unique and unprecedented role as a female ruler. In medieval Georgian sources, Tamar is known as “Mepe” (king) and as such, is sometimes called King Tamar, rather than Queen. Her line continued through her son and daughter, both of whom ruled Georgia after her. But none of her successors ever measured up to the greatness of Tamar. The empire she worked so hard to build crumbled a mere twenty years after her death. But her legacy lives on to this very day, not only in Georgia, but the rest of the world as well. Tamar the Great showed the world at that time that a queen could achieve just as much greatness as any king, if not more. She was canonized as the Holy Righteous Queen Tamar by the Georgian Orthodox Church and is also a saint of the Antiochian Orthodox Church. #georgianhistory #tamarthegreat #firstfemaleruler #kingofkings #buildinganempire #legacy #womeninhistory #inspiring #historicalfigures *Disclaimer - I do not own the above images.

On April 9, 1989, in Tbilisi, on Rustaveli Avenue, a peaceful demonstration for civil rights and independence was violently suppressed by the Soviet Army, with a significant presence of women and students among the demonstrators. Today marks 35 years since this tragic event - a day etched into Georgian history, symbolizing both, sorrow and revival of Georgia's independence, as exactly two years later, in 1991, Georgia's courage shone brightly - Georgia declared its sovereignty under the leadership of Zviad Gamsakhurdia. 🌹 Thank you to the young heroes for the liberation of our history! 🕊 #ESNGeorgia #ESNTbilisi #GeorgianHistory #April9th #Tragedy #GloryToHeroes

In commemoration of Georgia’s independence day, we take a look at the life and reign of the country’s greatest ruler. Often called Tamar the Great, she brought Georgia to the peak of its power and glory. A member of the Bagratoni dynasty, Tamar faced significant opposition from the aristocracy when she ascended the throne of Georgia in 1184, as the country’s first Queen Regnant. They wanted to be free of the repressive policies of Tamar’s father and did not believe that a young woman would be able to stand up to them. In the early years of her reign, the young queen was forced to make significant concessions to the aristocracy. She was pressured by them to dismiss the officials appointed by her father, who had helped the old king keep the nobility in check. They even chose a husband for her, Yuri Bogolyubsky, who turned out to be an incompetent drunkard among other things. But over the years Tamar was becoming more and more assertive of her rights as Queen Regnant, and had begun to build and expand a power base of her own by cleverly elevating those most loyal and able, despite their social standing. Two years into her marriage, Tamar divorced Yuri on the grounds of drunkenness and sodomy. However, Yuri did not go quietly. Aided by members of the aristocracy who wished to check Tamar’s growing power, he attempted two coups. Both of which failed and he was forced into obscurity. Soon enough, Tamar had neutralized those of the aristocracy who had opposed her. To be continued... #georgianhistory #tamarthegreat #firstfemaleruler #kingofkings #goldenage #powerstruggles #overcomingobstacles #leadinglady #womenin history #historicalfigures *Disclaimer - I do not own the above images.

“Perretta frightens the demon” Illustration by Charles-Dominique-Joseph Eisen (1720–1778) for “The Devil of Pope-Fig Island” by Jean de la Fontaine A fanciful tale, that is said to have ended with Perretta exposing herself and frightening the devil, who had been terrorising the village, as he had never seen such a “wound” before. There’s a lot to unpack in the image and more importantly, social commentary that could come with such a vivid image. Some would call it immoral, others would see it as entertaining. But overall, it’s a rather amusing and somewhat empowering image. - - - - - #18thcenturyartist #18thcenturyfashion #printculture #18thcentury #print #womenhistory #womenshistory #socialhistory #sociology #religiousimagery #classical #18thcenturyhistory #georgianera #georgianhistory #georgianperiod #french #18thcenturywomen #1700s #18thcenturyart #18thcenturyfashion #arthistory #art #print #bawdiness #bawdy

#georgia🇬🇪 #historylessons #sovietpast #georgianhistory #tbilisigeorgia🇬🇪❤️ #norussianlaw #norussianlaw🇪🇺🇬🇪 #nosovietcomeback #georgien #russiandanger #georgien_lektüre #geschichtsstunden #Kaukasus #caucasustravel

Discover a long-forgotten quirk of Georgian interior design – the Dummy Board! 💃🕺 Popular from the 17th century onwards, few survive today either in museums or historic houses. Most were freestanding, made from multiple vertical planks of wood, elegantly painted, and cut to the desired shape. They were designed to throw a natural shadow, thus appearing closer to life. But why? 🤷 Some historians suggest they may have been used for security, to give the impression a room was occupied, as fire screens, or as ‘Silent Companions’ for those afflicted by loneliness. However, their primary purpose appears to have been as practical jokes, with owners deploying them strategically around the house, to give unexpecting visitors a fright! 😱 Today, as part of our #FancifulFigures exhibition focusing on the figures in architectural drawing, we’ve resurrected this characterful tradition with our own wayfinding dummy boards, which bring some of our favourite ‘staffage’ figures into three dimensions! ✨ 📸 (1) Dummy boards, British or Dutch, c.1690, paint and varnish on softwood, © Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; (2) Dummy Board, A Grenadier of the Royal Scots Regiment, British, c. 1738, oil on wood, © National Army Museum; (3) Woman with mirror (Vanity), British, 1630-1650, oil on wood, © Victoria and Albert Museum, London. #LondonMuseums #VisitLondon #DiscoverLondon #OldLondon #UKHistory #GeorgianHistory #JohnSoane #LondonExhibitions

How many children did George III and Queen Charlotte have? . . . 👑 . . . Fifteen! Did you guess correctly? They had nine sons and six daughters. The royal couple welcomed their first child, George, Prince of Wales, in 1762. Their youngest child, Princess Amelia, was born 21 years later in 1783. Thirteen of the children survived to adulthood. Tragically, the Princes Octavius and Alfred did not live to see their fifth birthdays. George and Charlotte came from big families. Charlotte had nine siblings and George had eight siblings. The king and queen understood the appeal of their large family and utilised this in portraiture to shape a family-focused image of the monarchy. (Swipe for more images) The last survivor of the royal children was Princess Mary, who lived 1776-1857. She lived through the reigns of her father, two of her brothers (George IV and William IV), and her niece, Queen Victoria. #historyinpictures #historylesson #historylovers #historygram #historymatters #bridgerton #britishhistory #britishroyalty #britishmonarchy #britishroyalfamily #bridgertonseason3 #queencharlotte #queencharlotteabridgertonstory #georgianhistory #georgianera #georgeiv #georgeiii #regencyera #regencyromance #eighteenthcentury #fashionhistory #royalhistory #womenshistory #tudors #queenvictoria

Want to add some spice to your life? This stunning George III urn shaped silver nutmeg grater is what you need! In the late 17th century nutmeg and nutmeg graters became associated with drinking punch, at that time a fashionable alcoholic beverage. From Antique Trader: “It was a status symbol of extreme wealth to have a nutmeg grater and it was fashionable for gentlemen to carry a personal supply of the spice and a small grater tucked into a vest pocket, which also showed off their sophistication. When he wanted to flavor something, a gentleman would simply unscrew the grater and grate the seed against the steel teeth, shaking some of the spice into his food or drink — and likely impressing any ladies watching.” If you would like to learn more about the truly fascinating history surrounding the nutmeg grinder, head over to our FB for a really interesting article! 👑 Queen Sarah of Great Britain? Well, almost. Lady Sarah Lennox caught the eye of the young King George III in 1760. 👑 Lady Sarah was the daughter of the Duke of Lennox, a descendant of Charles II through one of his mistresses. 👑 Lady Sarah was considered one of the most beautiful young women at court. 👑 George III was so smitten that he admitted to his friend and advisor, Lord Bute, that he couldn't sleep for thinking of Lady Sarah. 👑 The king coyly remarked to Bute that he wanted to make Sarah his queen. The last time an English/British monarch had married a commoner was when Henry VIII married Catherine Parr in 1543. 👑 Lord Bute explained to George that marrying a commoner would only cause political turmoil and accusations of favouritism once Sarah's relatives began to expect advancement. 👑 George agreed to this advice, stating that he would always put his country's needs before his own. 👑 George married the Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in 1761. Lady Sarah was even a bridesmaid at the royal wedding! 👑 Lady Sarah married Sir Charles Bunbury in 1762, but the marriage was deeply unhappy and ended in divorce. The 👑 Follow for more history of royalty. #historylesson #historyinpictures #historymatters #historian #historylovers #queencharlotte #queencharlotteabridgertonstory #bridgerton #britishhistory #britishroyalty #britishmonarchy #britishroyalfamily #regencyera #regencyromance #georgianhistory #georgeiii #georgianera #royalhistory #royalhistorian

This silver thimble is the only one of its kind in the Foundling Hospital's token collection 💎 We may not immediately recognise its worth today but to a woman in the eighteenth century, it may have been an essential tool in earning a livelihood. Since it's made of silver, this particular thimble also carries material value. Discover the story behind this precious artefact in the 'Tokens of Style' episode of our podcast, 'Take this Token', with Ariane Fennetaux and @dressing.history. Visit the link in our bio to tune in. 🔍 A graphic of a squashed silver thimble against a purple background. 🔍 Three carousel graphics with text: 'This squashed silver thimble was left by a mother at the Foundling Hospital in 1759 with a baby boy renamed John Johnson. This token has been linked to a note and pieces of ribbon and threads. The note reveals that the child’s original name was Joseph and he was Irish. The ribbon and threads suggests that the thimble may have been attached to the infant for his journey to the Hospital.' #History #EnglishHistory #GeorgianHistory #London #Podcast

Just how in debt was Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire? It is well known that the Duchess of Devonshire enjoyed to gamble, of course this wasn’t uncommon, the Georgians loved to while away their evenings gambling all of their money away. Georgiana was most definitely addicted, it was very consuming for her, in 1784, her debts were £13 million in today’s money. After she died, it was said that her debt amassed almost £4 million in today’s money. Her husband reportedly said “is that all?” Georgiana spent the majority of her life living in shame with this, she would often pay a chunk of it off, lying about the true extent of the trouble she was in as she was scared the Duke would leave her. Despite their tumultuous marriage, he was always there for her financially and somewhat understanding. To understand the true extent on Georgiana’s lifestyle, I highly recommend Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire by Amanda Foreman; I have read it so so many times, her life is perfectly captured. The adaptation of Georgiana’s life highlights her gambling, as seen in the photos used, but doesn’t show the extent.
