크리스의 뉴욕 맨해튼이야기 #3 (April 26, 2024) 인간은 적응의 동물이라 그런지, 적자생존 … 그 어렵던 지하철도 단 하루만에 정복해버렸다. 더 이상 지하철 타는 것, 환승하는 것이 두렵지 않다. 물론 아직도 사인(sign)들을 열심히 보면서 찾아 다니기는 하지만 말이야… 오늘은 작심하고, 그 유명하다 유명한 The MET (The Metropolitan Museum of Art)와 Central Park를 거길기로 했기에… 내가 머물고 있는 Brooklyn 동네에서 유명한 도너츠 가게, 이름이 재밌게도 Peter Pan (피터팬) - 그곳에서 달달한 글레이즈드(glazed)와 커피 한잔으로 아침을 대신하고 뉴욕 지하철을 타고 환승하고 걸어서 미술관에 도착…. 난 이미 런던대영박물관, 파리의 루브르박물관, 그리고 마드리드의 프라도미술박물관, 암스텔담의 반고흐 미술관, 바르셀로나의 피카소 박물관, 그리고 이탈리아의 여러 지역 박물관과 미술관을 보았지만, 뉴욕미술박물관은 처음이라 많은 기대감을 갔고 떠났다. 웅장한 외관처럼 안에도 다양한 미술품들을 전시놓았다. 난 가장 관심 있는 게 사실, 반고흐의 자화상이었다. 이 자화상을 보려고 여기 왔다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 나이가 들면서, 그리고 미술관과 박물관을 다니다 보니 (그림의 어떤 깊은 조예가 있는 것은 전혀 아님), 이젠 원하는 그림을 그냥 스치듯이 지나가기 보다는 이리저리 들여다 보기도 하고, 그 앞에서 작가의 입장에서 그 그림이나 예술을 생각해보려고 한다. 뭐 그런다고 그림 보는 실력이 나아지거나 깊어지는 것 같지는 않지만, 그냥 서 있는 것이 좋다. 그냥 “왜"라는 질문을 수없이 던지며…. 반고흐의 자화상 앞에서 그렇게 서있었다. 내 자화상(self-portrait)은 어떤가? 이 나이에 내가 나의 자화상을 그릴 수 있는 능력이 있다면 나는 어떤 모습으로 내 자신을 남겨놓고 싶을까? 렘브란트의 자화상을 보면 참 가슴 아프기는 하더만… 37세의 나이에 자신의 생명을 끊고 불운의 인생을 살아간 반고흐는 저 자화상을 그릴 때 어떤 마음이었을까? 어떤 생각이었을까? 살아있는 동안 누구도 알아주지 않았던 자신의 작품들… 죽은 다음 수천억이 되면 무슨 소용있을까? 자화상을 그리면서 다음과 같은 편지를 동생 Theo (테오)에게 썼다 "I purposely bought a good enough mirror to work from myself, for want of a model." "내 자신을 모델로 사용하려고 좋은 거울을 일부러 구입했지 …” 하여튼 나는 미술관에서 3시간을 넘게 보냈지만, 나중을 예약하며 반고흐의 자화상을 마지막 여운을 남기며 떠나 허기진 배를 채우기위해서 근처에 있는 햄버거 매장을 찾아서 허기진 영혼과 배를 채우고 바로 근처에 있는 센트럴 파크로 산책을 갔다. 그곳은 완전 다른 세상이었다. 날씨가 참 좋았다. 약간 쌀쌀하기는 했지만, 햇빛이 참 좋았다. 그래서 많은 사람들이 걷고, 조깅하고, 강아지들을 데리고 산책을 했고, 잔디에 누워, 앉아서 가족끼리, 친구들끼리, 연인들이 늦은 봄을 만끽하고 있었다. 한 여인은 12마리의 강아지들을 동시에 산책하는 묘기를 보이기도 했다. 집에 남겨두고 온 나의 강아지 마일로(Milo)가 생각나서 지나가는 강아지들과 인사를 하고 멈추어서 놀기도 했다. 감동적인 멋진 예술로 허기진 눈과 가슴을 채우고, 햇빛을 맞으며 도시 한 가운데 있는 그 광활한 센트럴파크를 산책하니 내 영혼이 맑아지는 듯한…. 참 좋은 날이었다. 남은 생애를 이렇게 살 수 있기를 기대해보면 넘 큰 욕심이겠지… 그래도 그래도 말이야… #여행은행복이다 #2024뉴욕여행 #인생맘대로안된다 #크리스의여행이야기 #LiveItWhileYouCan #행복하고의미있게 #Manhattan #NYC #인생은여행 #행복하고재밌게 #행복하고의미있게 #잼나고의미있게 #재미나고행복하게 #TheMetropolitanMuseumofArt #센트럴파크 #TheCentralPark #vangogh #반고흐 #자화상 #selfportrait 오늘 여행 계획표 1. 뉴욕 지하철 그리고 Manhattan NYC Thursday April 25, 2024 (Brooklyn NY) 미국에 온지 45년이 됐지만, 지하철은 아마 처음 타는 것 같다. 미국은 대부분 대중교통보다는 자차를 이용하고, 도시 안에 거주하면 대중교통을 자주 이용하는 것 같다. 버지니아에서 Metro를 타고 워싱턴 디씨에 있는 Union Station (기차역) - 1시간, 워싱턴 디씨 기차역에서 뉴욕 맨해튼에 있는 Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station 까지 3시간 20분, 거기서 브루클린에 사는 글로리아 집까지 지하철 타고 다시 40분…. 와아 아침 8시에 집에 나와서 브루클린까지 8시간을 보냈다. 더더욱 뉴욕 지하철은 약간 개판 5분전이라, 진짜 복잡하고 복잡하다. 보통 유럽에서는 구글맵으로 쉽게 쉽게 지하철이나 메트로를 타고 환승하고 그러는 데 별 불편함이 없었는데, 뉴욕 지하철은 정말 오래되서 그런지 어디가 어딘지 모르겠다 ㅠㅠㅠ 그래서 묻고 또 묻고 해서 간신히 글로리아 집까지 도착! 그때까지 재택근무 하던 글로리아가 근처에 있는 카페 (@ACRE)에 가서 일을 더 해야한다고 함께 동행 진짜 맛난 아이스 라떼를 사주시고, 아빠가 뉴욕 온다고 맨해튼에 있는 아주 멋지고 맛난 이탈리안 레스토랑 예약 6시 예약! 일을 마치고, 뉴욕 맨해튼으로 지하철을 타고 이동해서 Da Andrea Italian Restaurant에서 기가막힌 홍합 요리와 파스타를 내 돈 내고 먹지 않고, 글로리아가 사줬다는 사실! 그러니 얼마나 더 맛있는지 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 이제 항상 어려만 보였던 딸이, 아마 내 페이스북에 처음 등장했을 때는 대학생 때였고, 많은 페친들의 사랑을 받았다. 올해 벌써 30살이 된다고 하니, 나도 깜놀!! ㅠㅠ 아 나만 늙어가는 게 아니구나 ㅠㅠ ㅋㅋㅋ 딸도 나이를 먹는구나! 반반한 직장이 있어서 이제는 딸한테 얻어먹어도 부담도 되지 않고 넘 좋다. 음식도 음식이지만, 글로리아랑 만나면 우리의 대화가 참 철학적이기도 하고, 인생에 대하여 이런저런 깊은 대화를 나누기도 해서 난 참 좋다. 그리고 그런면에서는 정말 잘 통한다. 글로리아와 정말 좋은 저녁시간을 보내고… 일부러 지하철을 환승하지 않고 멀리서 집에까지 걸어가면서 이런저런 대화를 나눌 수 있어서 또 좋았다. 그리고 뉴욕에 온 다음 날 아침, 글로리아는 친구 결혼식이 캘리포니아에 있다고 아침 6시반에 공항으로 떠났다. 뉴욕으로 떠나기 직전에 알게 된 사실! 와 신난다! 이젠 나 혼자다! 진짜 여행 온 느낌이다. 에어비앤비 대신 나는 공짜로 딸 집에 혼자 지낼 수 있다.. ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 오늘은 일단 Central Park 근처에 있는 The Metropolitan Museum of Art에 가서 오전 시간을 보내고, 점심은 센트럴 파크를 거닐며 핫도그 하나로 떼우든지 해야지. 오늘 날씨가 좋다. 햇빛이 있다. 온도는 그리 높지 않으나 걷기에는 아주 좋은 날씨다. 하나님이 도우신다! 오늘도 피곤한 하루, 행복한 하루, 그리고 나만의 여유를 만끽해보자. 가끔 이기적인 나르시스트 (narcissist) 되는 것도 정신적인 건강을 위해서 좋다!! ㅋㅋㅋㅋ #여행은행복이다 #2024뉴욕여행 #인생맘대로안된다 #크리스의여행이야기 #LiveItWhileYouCan #행복하고의미있게 #Manhattan #NYC #인생은여행 #행복하고재밌게 #행복하고의미있게 #잼나고의미있게 #재미나고행복하게 #TheMetropolitanMuseumofArt #센트럴파크 #TheCentralPark
The Met’s Grounded in Clay: The Spirit of Pueblo Pottery (on through June 4/24) is a must-see - it showcases not only beautiful pottery but a different curatorial approach: it was developed by the Pueblo Pottery Collective, nearly 60 Pueblo community curators from the 21 Pueblo tribes in the US Southwest who each selected 1-2 works for the exhibition & wrote the related text (I include the curator for each piece in square brackets). These ad concepts were for a Met Museum institutional ad campaign. I believe this was just as the new identity was released to the public. Many of the early concepts had different themes. “Guide to Life” paired artwork with famous quotes. Very often, us designers were also the copywriter. My take was to go for the humorous side. Most people would see these ads on subway platforms waiting for trains. Most likely during rush hour. I felt some humor would be needed and could be memorable.
