In yesterday's newsletter, we showed you the Giant Revolt 2 (pictured in Slide 2, for your convenience, in case you missed yesterday’s edition, or if you need a memory jog). The Revolt 2 is an entry level gravel bike, perfect for dippin’ ones toes in the mud. Today we bring you the Enve MOG (Master Of Gravel). The MOG is not an entry level gravel bike. It’s pretty much the best gravel bike in the world.* Why? Well, when you’re riding on pavement, it feels more road-bike-ish than many pure road bikes with skinny tires. But when it seamlessly transitions to unpavement, all of a sudden it goes from being a ballerina into a turbo charged tank that things it’s a Porsche. Powers through everything like everything is nothing, but still handles like a sports car, only magically stable and confidence inspiring. The geometry fits most people better than their best fitting glove, and the way it makes the roads/trails feel is utterly addictive. It’s a bike you’ll just love riding and never want to stop riding, and which you can ride pretty much anywhere. So those are a few reasons why I think it’s the best gravel bike in the world. Well, they are all that and more, probably my favorite all around tire so far. They are so fast on pavement that l've gotten several paved KOM's, top 5's, and PR's on them already, and they feel great on dirt, too --very plush, transmitting all the good vibrations and very few of the bad ones. Sometimes the marketing and hype is true, and this is one of those times. Here's some irony for ya. My last post was an epic about tubeless wheel/tire procedure. Half an hour after making that post, I went for a ride. I have four bikes in my regular rotation. Three are tubeless, one is not. For this ride, I chose the one that is not. And 30 minutes into the ride, pffffft! Flat! Fortunately, despite riding almost exclusively tubeless for the last nigh-on ten years, I still remember how to repair these things (I guess my day job gives me practice), so was back on the road again in five minutes...flat? Impromptu product reviews: #1 - If you look to the left of the wheel leaning against the wall, there is a little metallic red square gizmo. That is a Fumpa Pump Nano. It is a very miniature electric compressor, capable of inflating 200-250 psi per charge, and it works like a charm, inflating 1 psi per second. No more disposable and sometimes impotent co2 inflators/cartridges or mini-handpumping at the side of the road for me! So cool to use you'll look forward to your first flat so you'll have occasion to use it! #2 - The tube that flatted was a Schwalbe Aerothan, which is made out of a TPU material. It's extremely light and provides very low rolling resistance and a very pleasant almost tubeless-good ride quality. Supposedly highly puncture resistant, too --these things are subjective to coincidental experience, so I won't comment. I will say that all of the other claims are absolutely true: They feel great and roll fast. Bikes and Basketball, part 3/3 Slide 7: The Purple Trek 2300 Composite. Mitch Richmond. Richmond played for the Kings and the Lakers, who both have prominently purple jerseys. Also like Richmond, this bike is never going to be the star of any successful team (of ball players or bikes), but it's extremely capable in a major supporting role, and when the big guns are out due to injury, it can step in and provide a win. Slide 8: The Schwinn Prelude. Dennis Rodman, obviously. It's got some crazy colors going on, it makes a statement just by showing up, and while it's not going to put up big numbers in the scoring department and you probably wouldn't want to spend more than an hour with it, that hour is always going to be different and quite entertaining in its own special way. Also, I have a hard time fitting on this bike the way Rodman had a hard time fitting on basketball teams. Slide 9: The Adriatica Retro Man. For this bike, I'm going to step outside the 90's and go forward in time to Russell Westbrook, or back in time to Wilt Chamberlain. Westbrook and Chamberlain, while both great players obviously, were also possibly the greatest stat-padding number collectors in NBA history. And this is the bike that I use when, like those two, I need to collect lots of stuff. I hope you enjoyed reading this. Sometimes it can be a bit of a handful, but when it comes to sheer talent, scoring ability, and making the impossible seem easy, there's nothing like it. Slide 5: The Giant TCR. This one is MJ. Debates will go on about whether he's a better flat out scorer than Kobe. Maybe Kobe had the slight edge there, and maybe the Propel is flat out a little faster than the TCR. But the TCR is classic, man. It's got an indefinable quality to everything it does that is just perfect, and will probably endure as the most quintessential example of all around apex carbon road bike. Slide 6: The Enve Melee. Bikes and Basketball, part 1/3 Everyone knows I'm passionate about bikes. Did you know that long before bikes, I lived and breathed and basically existed on a diet of basketball, both playing and following the game, the way normal humans might owe their continued existence to a diet of solid food and hydrating substances? To this day, although I can hardly play anymore, my love for 90's NBA basketball and the game itself still flourishes. Today, let's take both of those obsessions and smush them together in a fun game of mixed metaphors, by assigning a 90's NBA personality to each of my bikes. Here we go! Slide 1: The Enve Mog. This is Hakeem Olajuwon. A center/gravel bike that has the rugged power to bang it down low no matter how rough the going gets, yet it is also agile, nimble, and surefooted like a guard/road race bike. Slide 2: The Purple Steel All-Road Bike (technically a very customized Norco Section S). This is Scotty Pippen. It's the all-rounder. It can score, it can play defense, it can rebound, it can facilitate. It's confident on dirt and fast on the road. And when the pure road bike (MJ) is out of commission and it needs to be step up, sometimes it does such a good job that I wonder if it's not flat out the best bike on the team, after all. Slide 3: The Ritchey Logic. This bike is Allen Iverson. It shows up to the park and folks look at it and think 'Really, this thing is going to keep up with us?' Well, sometimes you don't have to be 6'6"+, 200 lbs+ to lead the league in scoring, and sometimes you don't have to be carbon, aero-optimized, electronically-shifting, and less than 15 lbs to lay the smackdown on the group ride. Also, it's got compact gearing, which makes my legs spin as fast as AI crossing someone up and sprinting down the lane for a layup. This photo dispels a couple of myths. Myth #1 - "No riding outdoors in the winter." Hey, put on a some layers and try it. You'll be amazed at how much warmth your body can generate with just a little exercise, and how sometimes 35 degrees feels a lot more pleasant than 85. The laws of aero and thermodynamics will compel you to go slower, so don't worry: Your fitness hasn't fallen off a cliff; it's just science having its way with you. Once you wrap your head around that, winter riding can be some of the most enjoyable riding there is. Myth #2 - The prevailing sentiment among nouveau-cyclists (and even oldveau cyclists) seems to be that each bike must be lighter, stiffer, more aerodynamic, and more cutting edge than the last, and that any bike that is not specifically engineered to optimize those characteristics is a waste of time. Hey, take a look at a few more of my IG posts and you'll notice that I love my carbon superbike World Tour race machines as much as the next guy (probably more). However, I also know that speed is not the only metric, in fact it's not even the most important metric, by which a bike's quality ought to be measured. The Enve Melee will be my road bike for 2024, and very likely well beyond that. I've got about 25 hours on it so far, and there are two characteristics that really stand out to me above other pro tour road bikes I've ridden. #1 - The Melee *feels* amazing. The good vibrations coming through the handlebars, pedals, and saddle are as tactiley addictive as your favorite fidget toy; I want to keep riding because it feels so good! #2 - It is so easy to make the Melee do exactly what you want it to do. Look where you want to go, and the Melee will read your mind and your body English like the two of you have a soul mate connection thing going on. Just don't finish each other's sentences on group rides, that'd be annoying.
