Huntington Castle, located in Clonegall, County Carlow. Huntington is a 1625 garrison on the historically important Wexford to Dublin route. Originally built as a defensive garrison, formerly under an experienced soldier under Queen Elizabeth I, he fought under King James I as a major-general in Ireland, ultimately becoming governor of Duncannon Fort in Wexford. As a reward for his loyal service, he was given a peerage in Clonegal, becoming Lord Esmonde. While on an expedition, he met & married Ailish O’Flaherty, - granddaughter of the Pirate Queen of Connacht, Grace O’Malley. During this time, the castle remained mainly a garrison, protecting the Dublin-Wexford trade route along the River Derry. It was not until 1680 that the former garrison was formally named Huntington & began to evolve into the family home it is today, with the formal gardens being laid out by Lord Esmonde’s grandson, Sir Laurence II. Huntington remained relatively untouched until the 1700s when it had a number of alterations added to it to make it into a family home that it is known today. Upon entering the estate, you are greeted with the trees leading up the Avenue, planted by Sir Laurence II in 1687. Unfortunately, I did not get to do a tour inside when I got here as it was during lockdown and there is an angry small lady with a peacock that appears out of nowhere that will chase after you when ever you try to get close! Wondering what this ruin might have been in the past .. . . I reckon it’s been a farmhouse that has been abandoned for some reason and is now left over to the elements. As such it could have been a farmhouse for Huntington Castle which lies next to the ruin. Spooky .. . . A row of trees at the Huntington Castle estate in Carlow. The castle’s origins date back to 1400, when it was built for the Irish Caviness clan. But from the 16th century onwards, the château was restructured with defensive objectives in mind (surrounding wall, observation towers, etc.), due to the increasingly tense climate with the British. Huntington Tower Castle (Ruthven Castle), Perth🏴, SCOTLAND: Original structure was built in the 1400s with land gifted to the Ruthvens family for supporting and fighting alongside the campaign of Robert the Bruce. Estates and the Ruthen family were inhabitants of the area since the 1100s. The original castle was named Ruthven Castle but was later renamed Huntington Tower Castle in the late 1600s after 2 botched kidnapping attempts backfired on the original inhabitants. The lands and titles of the Ruthvens were forfeited, and the name was erased from the Book of Arms. The castle was passed on to the Murray Earl of Tullibardine. In the 18th century, the castle was abandoned. As with all castles, there is a strategic location, and this castle sat on an elevated stretch of land, which overlooked miles along its placement. After exploring many castles in Scotland, this castle was very intriguing with its rooftop viewing walkways, beautiful crafted fireplaces, window positions, and ceiling work.
