During the last week of Term 1, eight students (along with Mr Mike Webster and Rev Dr Lee Weissel) travelled to Munich, Germany for the Round Square International Conference on Democracy. Nine schools from around the world attended this conference, which was based at Landheim Ammersee International School. Our students had the opportunity for a pre-conference tour involving sightseeing around Munich, a snowy hike in the Alps and a trip to Neuschwanstein Castle, a visit to the BMW Museum, a tour of Allianz Stadium (Bayern Munich’s home ground) and shopping in Munich. They then went onto the student-led conference, hearing from guest speakers. Tom Sparrow, an International correspondent currently working in Germany, spoke to the students. He delivered a fascinating talk on deep fakes and fake news and its impact on democracy. They also had a zoom call with a 100-year-old survivor of the infamous Dachau, concentration camp. Now living in the US, Nick Hope spoke to the students about his life and his determination to survive the hardships he endured under the German, then Russian, regimes. Flying home, a planned stopover in Dubai was hindered by serious storms! Albeit a shorter visit than planned, camel rides and dinner in the desert were fantastic experiences before travelling home to Australia. This trip provided amazing experiences, meeting new friends form all over the world and opportunities for resilience to shine. Every year, towards the end of Term 1, Hutchins hosts the state da Vinci Decathlon. The Decathlon is a rigorous, international academic competition that emanated from Knox Grammar School in Sydney with students competing across 10 disciplines. This year Hutchins entered 7 teams across Years 5-9. We have been practicing for the competition at lunchtimes, often very noisy and with students working out where their individual and team strengths and weaknesses lay. During this da Vinci Decathlon, we have had another successful competition with our Year 5 team placing 1st overall for the State, Year 9 team placed 2nd overall and one of our Year 8 teams placed 3rd overall. We have also had many students walking away so excited for next year’s da Vinci! What a fabulous event to be able to offer to students in Tasmania. Hutchins and St Michael's Collegiate School Middle School students gathered at St David’s Cathedral on Tuesday 26 March for their Easter service. Hutchins students from Years 3-6 participated in the 55th JSSATIS Swimming Carnival yesterday, at the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre. Many of our students placed or recorded personal bests in the numerous events, indicating what a great day they had! We would like to congratulate Luca Mignanelli (Year 6) who had an outstanding day in the pool, taking first place in every event within his division and setting the tone for the winning relay teams. In addition, Luca was awarded the Bill Henderson Memorial Award for Best Male Swimmer. Some of our Hutchins Senior School students have been participating in a conducting academy with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO). Today we officially opened the new bush play space in the Junior School, and what a celebration it was! Last Friday, Year 2 students attended the launch of a new StoryWalk at Dru Point, Margate. Students met the authors and illustrators of the book We Love Country, before participating in the StoryWalk led by Year 5 student leaders. A StoryWalk is a story told over a series of ten panels, each with the text and image from a picture book, along with an invitation for movement. StoryWalks are designed to encourage families to enjoy stories and movement in a natural environment. The Dru Point StoryWalk, as well as the StoryWalk at Snug Rivulet, have been installed by the Kingston Library. Eventually, there will be four StoryWalks on offer in the Kingborough municipality.
