While the contributing factors are complex and not completely understood, the built environment may be one of the most important and ignored of them. In Bogotá, a city of 8-million, these spaces provide the restorative, social environments vital to improved mental well-being.
The contrast between the noise and stress of Bogotá’s traffic and its abundant, beautiful street art full of colour is stark. As diverse and creative as it’s residents, it would take years to capture all of it in photos. As a collection it is the most magnificent open air museum accessible to all its residents.
With an average travel time of over 95 minutes for low income residents Bogotá is investing in more efficient transport options. Bogotá’s Carrera 7 (Séptima) was transformed due to COVID with pedestrianization in the centre and a bi-directional cycle track as it travels north creating an active mobility spine. Launched in September 2022 the @tembici.co bike share system in Bogotá has been hugely successful. The scheme includes 1500 standard cycles, 1500 e-cycles, 150 hand-cycles, and 150 cargo bikes and already boasts over 25,000 users and more than 96,000 journeys!
