Have we become too obsessed with perfect curls? Let me explain.. Take the movie Pretty Woman, I adore @juliaroberts hair in that movie. Is it perfectly defined? No! Is there frizz? Yes. It looks amazing though and as a kid I coveted that hair (even though I had it!) I watched the first Top Gun movie last week and loved Kelly McGinnis' curls but once again, there was frizz and it wasn't perfectly defined, uniformed curls. When did we go from admiring someone else's perfectly imperfect curls to thinking that our own don't measure up? Why are we always on the hunt for that next amazing product? Why do we look in the mirror and think our curls aren't up to par? Is it Instagram? Do we spend so long scrolling, looking at photo after photo of amazing curls that, let's be honest, are curated to look perfect. Excellent angles, ring lights, the delete function on photos we don't like until we get that one pefect shot. Perfection doesn't exist in any facet of real life. There is no perfect person. No perfect job. No perfect car, house, child. And there definitely are no perfect curls. Perfection is an illusion so why do we keep chasing it?

I'm quite dreamy, wild and reckless at times, imperfect always, and my curls reflect that in my opinion. I love seeing people celebrating and embracing their hair for what it truly is! ✨ Perfect curls are a myth!✨ A recent post from @hanzcurls shed some light on how a lot of us focus on the “problem areas” that we want to “fix” in our hair. The truth is, most of these aren’t problems at all. They are normal parts of having curly hair. Sure, something like frizz can be SOMEWHAT controlled based on hair health and giving it what it needs, but in the end ALL curly hair is going to have frizz. But things like wonky curls, mixed curls patterns, stringy pieces, big clumps, little clumps, straight pieces… all these things are normal! Don’t focus on trying to get your curls to look like someone else’s. As @marisascurls pointed out recently, each of us has hair so unique that it’s like a fingerprint! Embrace it! We don’t see these things when we look at other’s curls, we just see the beauty of it. So why do we feel the need to pick ours apart and put ourselves down? That internal voice of ours is so powerful and we need to learn to not listen to it as often. I am learning to let go of perfection when it comes to my curls and focus on figuring out what it NEEDS. It takes a lot of experimenting with products to learn what your hair does and does not like. Perfect curly hair doesn’t exist. This picture shows a really good wash day for me. I absolutely loved my hair on this day - and when I showed it on stories lots of you did, too. But it’s not perfect, because curly hair never is. I get so many messages from you guys asking for advice on getting rid of the “problem areas” I’ve highlighted here, but you don’t see them on other people’s hair, so why do you pick them apart on your own hair so much? Something that’s really important in your curly journey is letting go of perfection. Letting go of always expecting the “perfect wash day”. And believe me, it’s something I struggle with, too. No matter how many styling techniques you use, I still feel like curly hair has a mind of its own. It just can’t be controlled in the same way as when heat styling. Everyone with curly hair has at least some of the things listed on this picture. And while some curly hair problems can be solved in time through getting to know your hair, for me, there will always be some frizz, there will always be random wonky curls and stringy pieces, and my curls will never curl from the root.
