The season of cosy clothes and cups of tea has started! I've had a couple of clients recently ask if it's okay for them to finish a cuppa while in session and my answer is always "of course!". For a lot of my clients, a warm drink can be very grounding, regulating and calming. It's made me reflect on the unspoken rules that seem to have developed around what people are "allowed" to do in appointments. It's so important in healthcare spaces for people to have the freedom to use any tools that help them feel regulated, safe and calm - whether that's fidget toys, warm drinks, sitting on the floor, lying on the bed, snacking on some food or moving around while we chat. Body image is a journey that starts way too early. From the innocent age of 3, we're bombarded with societal standards that dictate what we should look like. But here's the truth: it doesn't matter if you're thin, big, or somewhere in between. What truly matters is your health and mental well-being. I've been on both ends of the spectrum. Growing up thin, I was labelled 'anorexic,' and as I gained weight in my 20s, I was called 'fat.'' It felt like I couldn't win. Even after having my daughter, I struggled with self-acceptance. But in the middle of the noise, I realized the importance of lifting each other up. Now, as a mum of two, my motivation to work out isn't just about getting fit. It's about being strong and healthy for myself and my kids. I want my daughter to see that taking care of yourself is essential, both physically and mentally. She's my biggest cheerleader, reminding me if I've done a workout. Self-care is a gift, not a guilt trip. It wasn't easy, but I decided to ditch the Snapchat filters and embrace my real self. Sure, I still have my off days, but I'm learning to love the woman I see in the mirror. If I want to help my daughter navigate her own journey, I have to lead by example.
