The Nigerian government's failure to investigate the massacre for several years fosters a climate of impunity, denying the community closure and resulting in injustice. Many in Asaba are grappling with unaddressed trauma, testifying, “That somebody should tell them that we are still as we were before and after. There is no change. Nothing. And we have been living in these types of developments.” Today, Asaba not only confronts the enduring effects of the massacre's underlying causes but also contends with the ongoing impunity and collective trauma stemming from the event.
